    The most recent talks between Russia and Japan over the status of the islands were held in early 2019. Japan’s then prime minister Shinzo Abe and Russian President Vladimir Putin had agreed to accelerate negotiations based on the 1956 document, which stated that the Habomai islets and Shikotan would be handed back to Japan, and the question of Kunashiri and Etorofu was to be settled during negotiations for a peace treaty.

    Hello ! May Allah protect and guide you to his light and happiness in this life and the hereafter, God bless, Ameen. Excuse me for giving a little presentation of Islam, because it is very misunderstood nowadays, especially on those « Antichrist's » times, where media and politics are mixed to distort history and truth. Thank you very much for your time. Islam is an arabic word that means the Surrender to the One and Only God, our Creator, Protector, Provider, who gives us life and all that we have, we are safe and sound by his will and grace, we are His and to Him we return, and we have to thank him in this trial life by submitting to him by our free will, or later in the Day of judgment when it's too late to save our own skin. Islam was the original Religion descended to earth from heaven with Adam and Eve (peace and blessing be upon them) in the beginning of humanity. and was passed to people with the succession of the 124 000 prophets and 315 messengers of God to all nations and civilizations since, passing by Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Ismaël, Joseph, Moses, Aaron, Joshua, David, Solomon and Jesus (Peace and blessing be upon them) during the history of mankind, the last replaces and completes the previous, until the succession of the last messenger of God fourteen centuries ago, Muhammad (Peace and blessing be upon him) to complete the noble morals of all mankind, to bring humans and jinns out of darkness into light, and to purify people's religion and belief from corruption and polytheism, and return it to purity and true monotheism, like it was in the times of the prophets (Peace and blessing be upon them). Many Religions that we know nowadays, at their beginning were true and under Islam, initiated by one of the prophets of God, but their original teachings, history and scriptures have been corrupted over time with falsification and polytheism, or lost and replaced with false ones. That's why Islam is the only Religion accepted by God nowadays, which consists in bearing witness that there is no god besides Allah (God in Aramaic, the original language of Jesus and the Gospel), and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger, just like Jesus and Moses and others are His servants and messengers. Never a messenger of God said he was God or literally son of God, it was the people after him who changed the words of God and corrupted the Religion. God is unique and absolute, He does not need to have a family and sons or to associate anyone else with His kingdom, He can simply create whatever He wants, everything belongs to Him, and to Him everything will return. Allah said in Surah Al-Mu’minun : “God has never begotten a son, nor is there any god besides Him. Otherwise, each god would have taken away what it has created, and some of them would have gained supremacy over others. Glory be to God, far beyond what they describe. The Knower of the hidden and the manifest. He is exalted, far above what they associate. (91-92 / Translated by ITANI). Allah means the one and only God, the God of all prophets and creatures, the creator of the universe and mankind, and the Master of the Day of judgment, where our destiny, Hell or Paradise, is decided based on our faith and deeds in this trial life, and above all, Allah's mercy. Allah said in Surah Al-Ikhlas : In the name of God, the Gracious, the Merciful. Say, “He is God, the One. God, the Absolute. He begets not, nor was He begotten. And there is none comparable to Him.” (1-4 / Translated by ITANI). Allah said in Surah An-Nisa : O FOLLOWERS of the Gospel! Do not overstep the bounds [of truth] in your religious beliefs, and do not say of God anything but the truth. The Christ Jesus, son of Mary, was but God's Apostle - [the fulfilment of] His promise which He had conveyed unto Mary - and a soul created by Him. Believe, then, in God and His apostles, and do not say, "[God is] a trinity". Desist [from this assertion] for your own good. God is but One God; utterly remote is He, in His glory, from having a son: unto Him belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is on earth; and none is as worthy of trust as God. Never did the Christ feel too proud to be God's servant, nor do the angels who are near unto Him. And those who feel too proud to serve Him and glory in their arrogance [should know that on Judgment Day] He will gather them all unto Himself: (171-172 / Translated by Muhammad Asad). Allah the Most Merciful said in Surah Ali-Imran : Behold, the only [true] religion in the sight of God is [man's] self-surrender unto Him; and those who were vouchsafed revelation aforetime took, out of mutual jealousy, to divergent views [on this point] only after knowledge [thereof] had come unto them. But as for him who denies the truth of God's messages - behold, God is swift in reckoning! Thus, [O Prophet,] if they argue with thee, say, "I have surrendered my whole being unto God, and [so have] all who follow me!" - and ask those who have been vouchsafed revelation aforetime, as well as all unlettered people, "Have you [too] surrendered yourselves unto Him?" And if they surrender themselves unto Him, they are on the right path; but if they turn away - behold, thy duty is no more than to deliver the message: for God sees all that is in [the hearts of] His creatures. Verily, as for those who deny the truth of God's messages, and slay the prophets against all right, and slay people who enjoin equity - announce unto them a grievous chastisement. It is they whose works shall come to nought both in this world and in the life to come; and they shall have none to succour them. (19-22 / Translated by Muhammad Asad).. God said : Say, “We believe in Allah, and in what was revealed to us, and in what was revealed to Abraham, and Ishmael, and Isaac, and Jacob, and the Patriarchs, and in what was given to Moses and Jesus, and in what was given to the prophets from their Lord. We do not differentiate between any of them. And to Him, we surrender.” (2:136 / Translated by Community) Salam (Peace) -----

They had closed themselves off to trade with European and Western powers which is not the same as being closed off from the world. The actions of Japanese politicians in negotiations about the Kuril Islands are very strange, instead of close relations and friendship with Russia, to soften Russia's ultimatums, they chose the side of the opponents and then try to negotiate, it's ridiculous. This is the same as wanting to take a candy from another person's hands and instead of making friends with them, you say that if anything happens, you will beat them up.

    20minute video and you missed to mention the MAIN reason why Russia will not give up those two big islands. The reason being if Russia owns them the HUGE sea to the west of the islands is considered Russia"s sea and no other country's ship can enter it without russia's permission. However, as soon as those 2 islands are given to Japan, the sea becomes international and anyone can enter it.

    7:46 what he didn't mention was that ANOTHER giant oil field exists in Manchuria called Daqing. It is the largest oil field in the entire PRC and would've probably prevented Japan from attacking Pearl Harbour as well as the European colonies in Asia (they would possibly still occupy French Indochina) . Considering Japans relatively good relations with the West at the time, the Emperor System would probably have survived and Japan would be to the US what Saudi Arabia is nowadays to them. Manchuria would've played a far larger role in the Cold War and the decolonisation of East Asia would have taken longer.

    You neglected to mention another highly valuable resource in the disputed quartet of the Kuril Islands: The largest known deposits of rheniite, a rhenium sulfide mineral first discovered in 1994 within active hot fumaroles of the Kudriavy Volcano, Iturup Island (the northeastern of the two larger islands), which led to Russia displacing Chile as the largest producer of rhenium. Rhenium is exceedingly rare and thus very expensive, and 70% of its production worldwide is dedicated to making jet engine parts, which makes it crucial not only to civilian aviation but military aviation as well. It may not have played a role in the Soviet decision to take the islands and refuse to hand them back due to them being unaware of its existence, but it does play a major role in modern Russia's decision on the matter.

    Firstly, this video is incredible. Secondly, what this video neglects to mention is the decisive battle of Khalkin Gol in Mongolia in 1939, (before the invasion of Poland.) Japan and the USSR didn't just have border skirmishes on the Manchurian border, but on the Mongolian border as well. Mongolia at the time was a communist puppet state of the USSR. Japan had a border dispute with Mongolia in the Khalkin Gol region and sent troops to the land in the region they had claimed. But the Soviets came to Mongolia's aid and the was able to check them at the decisive battle of Khalkin Gol. Japan was able to push Russia around pretty well up until this point. Therefor, Japan had tried to keep the USSR on side from that point on. This battle is also the big reason why Japan didn't begin attacking the USSR.

    Alternate History Hub made a video on what if Pearl Harbor never happened. In this alternate timeline instead of using Japan’s southern strategy and going to war with America, Japan instead expands their empire north and attacks the Soviets. Had the USA sat out of the war, Japan likely would have fallen to communism. Same with most of Europe up until France. So Germany would be united under the East German Communist state. This would be the rise of Soviet global dominance. Interestingly the reason why Japan surrendered in 1945 wasn’t really the Atomic Bombs, Japan feared the USSR far more than the USA so I few cities being nuked was like it being fire bombed. Just with less bombs. The United States really nuked Japan for political reasons.

During 1950s US went to have a dialogue with China without notifying Japan, making them feel like USA doesn't see Japan as an actual ally or a partner (more so, Japan was a victim of "humiliating deal" with the US). In return, Japan went to make a "deal with the devil" aka USSR. The result - joint declaration of 1956. In short, USSR agreed to give Habomai islands and Shikotan in exchange for signing a peace (the transfer of the islands would happen AFTER) plus some other stuff like supporting Japan's entry to the UN etc. There wasn't any misunderstanding, the deal was what it was in the document (it's just a declaration that doesn't really have any power, just an agreement on a direction between two sides). After hearing about this, United States stated that they would annex Ryukyu Islands (Okinawa etc) if Japan gives up on other two islands, made a "pro-union" Japanese administration to leave their posts and placed pro-us ones in their seat. Later, the "humiliating deal" which would allow US to use their military in Japan as they see fit would be transformed into something far less one-sided and Japan would demand all four islands (they also wanted Sakhalin while at that but they knew it was a lost cause) and their demands will be supported by United States. Since then, until the Union's collapse, USSR would "close" the territorial dispute as it didn't exist in the first place (territorial disputes exist ONLY IF both sides see those present). TLDR: US wants those islands back to Japan because they will be able set their own military bases there, while Japan would like have them back pretty much only for fishing (they have to sign a deal with Russia every year to allow Japanese fishermen to do their stuff there). Russia doesn't want to give them back because of the fact that Japan is "occupied" by US and those islands would turn into military bases for them. Plus, of course, it's an important sea pass. P.S. Technically, it could've been solved long time ago, since both sides can fill the gaps of one-another (Japan's lack of resources and Russia's lack of investments in Far East), but the US factor always plays a dominant role and UN's fundamentals are a joke for anyone who deems to be a "super-power" (Russia, China, US).

Russia would be giving up a strategic advantage to return the islands. PS1 - no need to build any air bases as many Japanese airbases exist within easy striking distance of the islands. Good video, but one thing I want to point out is that China does not recognize the Russian ownership of the four disputed islands mentioned in the video. • @loyalbeaver9402

    @loyalbeaver9402

    Your mention of China is meaningless. China is simply not part of the dispute. The stance China took is one of pro-Russian neutrality. On all Chinese maps, the islands are marked as "disputed between Russia and Japan" - it's true China doesn't officially recognize Russian ownership; it also, however, doesn't recognize Japanese ownership. In fact, China has been taking up the same stance in regard to a number of territorial disputes among other countries. For example, in all Chinese maps, the Falkland Islands are marked as "disputed between Argentina and UK"; the whole Kashmir is painted in color distinct from both Pakistan and India and marked as "disputed between" the two. In practice, however, China has been consistently implying it takes Russia's side. Its government's spokeswoman, Hua Chunying, had addressed the issue by stating that it's China's belief that the results of WWII must not be overturned. What it clearly implies is that since Russia took over the islands by the end of WWII, it's a "done deal" that Japan ought to just accept, whatever historical/legal arguments it may have that suggest otherwise. This is hardly surprising, given China is both Russian's quasi-ally and Japan's arch-rival, with whom it has ongoing territorial dispute over Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands. It makes no sense for China to take Japan's side.

As said earlier, no official Chinese map from Mainland China marks the islands as Japanese territories. Which is why bank accounts (which were not emptied by the Allies), art treasures, statues, etc., are not subject to German law. Germany had to be returned (Russia has theoretically stolen some pieces according to international law and keeps them despite the verdict). 11:36, I have read that it was president Roosevelt who asked Stalin if he could intervene in the pacific war at Yalta in Febuary 1945 and even back in Teheran 1943, Stalin agreed with Churchill and Roosvelt that once Germany was defeated the Soviet Union will join the war against Japan. Sure it was illegal due to former treaties and obligations but thats not how realpolitik works. Secondly: Japan and Ussr/Russia HAS signed a peacetreaty, ending ww2 in pacific. Soviet-ukranian general Kuzma Derevyanko was onboard USS Missouri and singned the instrument of surrender. The argument that "ww2 never ended in Japan" dosn´t work. There is peace treaty signed by Russian and Japanese delagators. (Edit: saw the yalta bit now that you mention it :))

    As someone who has studied the Northern Territories issue since the 1980s, even going to Hokkaido's Cape Nosappu (納沙布岬), the closest point to the Northern Territories, to gather information, I am very impressed with the accuracy of this video. I might add that since the distance between Cape Nosappu and the closest Habomai island, Kaigara-jima (貝殻島) is only a couple of miles, it presented all sorts of problems for Japanese boats trying to navigate around the cape during the Cold War era and maybe still does today. And one slight correction-- the surname of the current Japanese prime minister is Kishida, not Soshida. But that was the only inaccuracy I found with this video..

Actually, some oil reserves where discovered even before the 1990's, but in small quantities in North Sakhalin. The Japanese army invaded the northern part during the Russian civil war, and managed to get a temporary concession over the oil fields found there. However, the most important fossil fuel at the time was coal, extracted from the central part of the island.
