Why Childfree Numbers Are Rising - Part 2

Welcome back to part two of last weeks video!
People are quick to call us selfish and materialistic when it comes to choosing a childfree lifestyle but very rarely do they ever ask us why.
While plenty of us simply just don't want to be parents, it can also stem from the very things going on around us.

I have a whole bunch of reasons for being single/unmarried. I will share my top 3 reasons. 1. I am not the correct material for marriage. 2. Romantic partnership is so expensive. 3. Too many people lie and cheat. I have a whole bunch of reasons for being childfree. I will share my top 3 reasons. 1. Children are too expensive. 2. Parenthood is a lot of responsibility. 3. This world is disgusting. Naturally, I am an introvert and you can't do that when you are married with children.

I'd like to point out that child poverty more than doubled from 5.2% in 2021 to 12.4% in 2022. Since average pay is still not keeping up with cost of housing and inflation, despite lower inflation rates this year than 2022, I don't see the child poverty rate improving. As a person who grew up in poverty I refuse to raise a child in poverty. That number needs to be below 5% and my household's income into 6 figures before I would consider raising a child.

Thanks for sharing. This is not a new issue to me. Folks in the past have chosen to be non parents, and this is forgotten in America. For example, the late MaVynee Betsch, former opera singer Oberlin college, environmental activist, never married. No kids. The late Jessye Norman, also never had kids and never married. The list goes on. I have a file on this topic........ From the gymnastics center, aerial silks class this morning 🌄🌄

Woah project 2025 scares the hell outta me. I'm an immigrant from China to the USA, adopted at age 1. In China there is a communist dictator (called a president but that's just a title, it's really a dictatorship!) I was the short term victim of the 1 child policy (the long term victim is the nation themselves. Now they have a severe shortage of woman from about 2 generations, and legit population problem) I left 1 dictatorship I don't want to live under another. Being child free really is the best choice for the modern world.

I have multiple childfree friends but have always felt in the minority for partly attributing my feelings to the state of our country (+ the climate crisis, which is definitely related to the overconsumption in America). Most of my childfree friends just cite lack of desire, but don't share my concerns about how our society is toxic for children. Thank you for making videos about it.

Thanks for having this channel and making your videos. I live in what is called "the bible belt" that stretches in lower Canada and into the U.S. Sometimes it can just be awful for us CF people just trying to live our lives. Constant harassment about having babies from co-workers and community is definitely something I get sick of. A few told me I do not deserve to be alive if I am not going to have babies. For others at work I was told I should be denied my holidays because I do not have children and therefore do not have a family and people with kids should have first priority even though I had worked many, many years and the most seniority in the department as a whole (oh yeah, it was a unionized job so I got the union in on this mess and they slapped down that garbage for me because my jerk boss agreed that I am not worthy of the holidays I earned as well because I don't have kids).

I could write a book but.... my mother tried to kill me, I was raised in a hostile environment. First person I can say truly loves me is my daughter (I am a single parent), but let me tell you how that works: a) I have to let her go out to school, outside, on vacations and parties, constantly thinking about millions of things that can go wrong, to the point that the only way I can resume with my day is accepting she is not going to come back, something horrible will happen that I could not avoid or prevent in any way, and I will just have to deal with it b) hate myself for even though I worked 16-18h a day I still did not manage to provide us with a home, and living in rent c) hate myself for not being a normal stable parent for her, with social anxiety, ADHD and depression d) hate myself for not taking her to parks and nature more because I had to work e) hate myself for using "I had to work to pay bills and food" as excuse for not spending more time with her when she was a kid, when I could spend more time and just have less or no money and see how that will turn out.... f) hate myself in general People that think love is enough are idiots. You need money and house. If you do not have at least 200k and house or apartment in your name you should not be allowed to have kids. When your child is the only one in the school without iphone, you can say all day long "she doesn't need it, bla bla bla".... but the fact is..... why you can't buy her iPhone, just sell kidney or something. "She will be stronger. She will be confident, she will learn not to care for materialistic things..........." All the mambo jumbo rich people say to poor people to make them feel better. OK, but why? If she had another person as her parent she would just have love and iphone. So you see...... Yes, she is amazing. Everyone tells me I raised a beautiful girl. But that is not going to fix anything in my head for hating myself every second of every day for not providing better things and better me to her. I will always hate myself for that. It is just a constant state of mind.

It doesn’t matter how much your daughter loves you if you so obviously despise yourself. And it’s not due to the fact that she was born. If she wasn’t, you’d find other reasons to talk horribly about yourself. The fact that you basically belittle her love for you by demonstrating that according to you she shouldn’t, is a good indicator that you need a tremendous amount of inner work towards self acceptance. If you have running water, electricity, a roof over your head, I’m assuming internet, since you are typing this under a youtube video, you already have more for your child than I had as a kid. And I still wouldn’t change a thing about my childhood. My mother’s love was the reason I didn’t turn into an unkind human, that I am empathetic towards others, which is far more needed in this world today, than an another successful businessman. And I actually learned to appriciate everything I have, and life therefore gave me more to be grateful for. My grandmother once said: “those who complain, should be taken from.” People always want to go about things backwards. You think you’ll be at peace with yourself when you have more. You won’t. You only will when you do the work on your buried wounds.

I guess my biggest concern (at a napkin math level of thinking about it) is that we're heavily banking on technology overcoming the massive labor shortage we're going to face once we're older. I'm under no delusion that we're going to die out or anything along those lines, but... some one has got to do the work. I fear it will be us doing it until we die. Secondly, I'm not a fan of "the world isn't good enough" line of thinking. I agree with Louise Perry on this. Our ancestors brought children into this world knowing full well that many of them would die within 5 years of life. While it certainly doesn't feel like it... this is objectively the best time in the history of mankind to be alive. Yes there's a housing shortage, yes inflation is rough, yes we're plagued with social, cultural, and economic issues... but by and large we're MUCH better off than our ancestors. Orders of magnitude better off. So better off that we (at least those of us with internet access watching a youtube video about being childfree) can't even conceptualize what it was like to grow up in a world where every single day was a fight for survival. As in literal life and death survival. As in if you don't eat TODAY you will die tomorrow. This isn't said to minimize our suffering or belittle anyone for their reasons, but I just have a real hard time believing that it's somehow impossible and/or immoral to bring a child into this world at this time. Now this all being said, who the heck am I to call anyone selfish or materialistic. It's your life. Live it how you want to.
