I've been watching this guy for years. Idk why because I'm not a painter. But one thing is for sure, whenever I build my next house I want to pay to fly him and his team out to paint my house. I've never see such quality work. This dude knows his stuff.

LOL...I know right? I love watching these guys, even though I only do a little painting.

After watching this video, I was ready to start my painting project. I was blown away with the results. Exceeding my expectations.I was painting solo so I was working on a 12' section at a time. Thank you for a great video.

For trim, I prefer to lightly paint over the tape with trim color vs caulking because even the tiniest particles of caulk that are left over on the trim after you peel off the tape will pick up dust and/or yellow at a different rate than the trim itself and if you're OCD like me, it will drive you mad.

I thought the old man that taught me this trick while spraying was insane but he was spot on as are you .

Very clear examples! I used these strategies and achieved very clean lines in my house.

I have learned more about painting in the last two days binging on your videos than any other sources combined. I appreciate you showing how to cut in free hand as well as using the frog tape and caulk. I like knowing the options I have, if I am not good at cutting in free hand i have the option to use frog tape and caulk. Thank you.

Thank you For sharing your tips and tricks. I have been watching you intermittently for years. I always refer back to your videos when I need a refresh or how to do something like caulking correctly and efficiently. I have been able to update rooms in my house, a nursery room at my son and daughter-in-law house😊their friends said it looked like designer wall paper as my lines were perfect, used 3 shades of blue, got creative, bought a 1 1/2 “ star stamp and did a cute pattern…that was almost 3 years ago and still looks awesome! I also got some wood letters to spell out my grandsons name and glued those into a old small chalkboard frame and painted the frame and letters in the same 3 shades of blue on the walls-super cute and it all started from you teaching and inspiring me. Thank You!

Years ago I was working for an interior designer who had me paint a living room with five different shades of white. Any hair line crack shows up as a black line. Took a full day of caulking and touch-up to eliminate every visual dark line. Final result was quite amazing.

So many people say they HATE painting, but I have always enjoyed it. Well maybe not always.

Another good trick is to use clear water base flat glaze which is a thinner viscosity than caulk and can be brushed on then wiped down over edges of the tape and painted . Once de taped, it leaves a sharp line over a rough surface. Used this method for over 30 years in Idaho with no after problems.

I am glad I found this vid. Thank you. I had a similar idea but using the clear coating used on windows before painting. When it's dry you just peel it off and cut your lines at the edges. If you have used this stuff I'd watch that video.

@@Andrew-wq1ue EXACTLY! Thank you. This is a 3-4 minute video, at most, that has been drug out to almost 48 minutes. The repetitiveness just droned on and on to the point of aggravation.

Hey guys! Love your videos.. I've been a painter for 11 years on long island but I am mostly the caulker of our group. I've killed an entire case of that 950 in a day on many occasions! I have baby sized hands and I've Tried every method. I use gloves but cut the finger tips off so I get better contact and don't leave railroad tracks. Better result but many bloody fingers 🤣 keep making videos one can never learn everything 🤘

So you think this is the way to go? To me, it seems like a waste of time and material if you've got a good cut man. Will use it with my next metal window jobs though...they are a B&%$#!

I've had good results using the base color over the tape to seal the tape and coming back with the final color after it dries. No issues removing the tape and a perfectly crisp line. I do like the idea of caulking around the trim.

I’ve done this with the undercoat color of paint instead of caulking. This would work much better because with the method I have used requires that you let that filler coat dry. This is both faster and gets cleaner results. Love it!

Takes too long to do this. Run the edge of tape with the undercolor, then paint your line color. The paint will seal the edge of the tape without leaving what he calls a "Dam".

If your taping over a White wall to paint a different colour, just do this, tape first then paint white over the edge your painting a different colour. Let it dry then paint your new colour, the white will have filled the small voids at the edge of the tape, when almost completely dry peel off tape, result, perfect edge!! Just sayin!!!

You can also take a thin piece of plastic like a credit card and run it over the tape. The Friction creates heat which melts the wax on the tape and forms a seal to prevent bleeding.

quick tip. if your doing 2 coats on the wall have the trim masked with tape on the edges and roll all the walls with 2 coats and get about 1/8 or 2/8 inch away from the tape then just do the caulking and paint then take the tape off and boom all rolled 2 coats and not having to take the tape off preventing drips from falling

Thanks for this. Interesting to learn about the white pigment lending a heavier body.

When wiping I load the back of my left hand (I'm right handed) with the extra caulk so I can use it somewhere else. When cutting the tube tip go smalllllllll, tiny bevel cut! LESS = MORE!

Looks simple enough. What we've done is to paint the edge of the tape with the paint color that's under the tape. That usually means letting it dry enough so that it doesn't mix with the color we're cutting in, which can result in rough spots when the tape is lifted. I like this idea of using clear caulk instead and then getting right to it. Maybe I'll try it with clear paint.

maybe im the exception but i seen "caulk your tape" and the length of the video was almost 50 minutes , i said I GOTTA WATCH THIS . Straight up i need to hear as much info as i can. because whenever i use this technique and someone questions me about my methods i want to be able to back it up. Please Chris dont ever feel that you need to rush thru a video, give us your best and the videos be as long as it has to be. Dont compromise your integrity and give us something that was rushed. Ive tooken on painting jobs with confidence because of your videos. Know that your time, talent and treasure isnt wasted brother. With that being said thank for another excellent video.

Cool video.. I'm guessing that when you do this process on a large area, like baseboards, windows etc., you're not worried about the caulk that gets on the paint brush contaminating the paint that's in the can when you dip it?

Latex paint and latex caulk won't contaminate the paint. Both are water soluble. You can actually thicken your paint with latex caulk and mix well and use a roller to cover flaws on your substrate.

When taping for this method, does the tape get placed right up against the surface getting painted or do you leave a slight gap? Thanks SO MUCH for your tips, btw!

I'm late but for anyone else who might wonder, he says place tape 1/8th of an inch away from wall. So caulk layer is thin on tapes edge, so when u pull tape there's no ridge left behind.

I actually used your method to paint my entire house which has all SW flat paint. It turned out perfect actually.

How early can I pretape with the FrogTape? I know the rest of the steps need to happen at the time of applying the paint.

The caulk doesn't have to be wet. Just make sure when u caulk the tape your pulling most of the caulking out just leaving a very thin film on the tape line

today i learned something, masking and frog tape have never worked that well on their own but next time i need to do some i'll buy caulk too. i suck at applying silicone seal but this looks much easier.

crisp lines... try this lets say you are painting swiss coffee semigloss moldings and mocha walls. paint the trim first. then mask off the trim. then the trick-use a flat version of the swiss coffee trim color. let dry. it will seal any gaps and prevent bleed . then paint your color coat. when you pull the tape, the flat paint tears off easily leaving really straight clean lines. we roll brush and paint with this method.

Jeff Borges - Just so I'm confident I understand, do you purchase a 2nd can of trim paint - both cans the same color but each can has a different sheen level? So any surface (usually trim, correct?) that is taped off requires this additional can of paint? And, you don’t experience the problem warned about in this video, that of dry, flat paint sheens cracking when the tape is pulled off? Are you leaving the tape/paint combo on for more than 1 coat of paint? Thanks

Bethany Anderson yes. Flat paint has less strength so when you pull it off, it tears. If you press the tape well, you won’t have so much seepage. This also allows you to draw a line with a straightedge and follow that perfectly

@@j.o.stribute8848 yeah especially with older houses, none of the edges are straight. the perfectly straight lines of tape show up making everything else look wrong. Most people are not skilled with a brush, but with some practice and patience (and good brushes) the lines look so much better if cut in by hand.

@@miguelnoches7558 My old co. I worked for would of fired me for using tape. The guy I worked for last summer masked EVERYTHING. He sprayed all the trim on the interiors. The last place I worked on for him I had 5 old windows that needed scrapped, sanded, calked, primed, and painted on the second floor. He wanted to know how long each window was going to take me? How do you answer that question? I just said I didn't know because not every window was the same. This other guy that worked for him sanded all the paint off the front of the house. The Boss went and bought different sanders for him to do it. He came to me and said he told him that he didn't need to go that far with it. He was supposed to do it in 1 day, and he spent 3! One last thing. He didn't like to pressure wash houses! My old boss had us PW every house!

Randy, You should always use a nice brush to save time. My best friend uses a block brush to cut in, and he does pretty good with it, but not me I use a 2 1/2 '' Purdy! I've had to use a duster brush if that's all there is around.

If you watched it, you would have seen that it is several of his videos on using caulking with tape, all put together in one video. That's helpful to someone who wants multiple examples, but for the guy who just wants to see it, he can just watch the first part.

Wow. What a cool technique!

I've been a painting contractor over 40 year's and have never had to tape baseboards, door casings, countertops, cabinets, or anything to brush a straight crisp line, do all prep work the day before painting, taping is a waste of good time and money, tape is to keep plastic drops in place over cabinets, railings ceiling fans and hanging lights and furniture, get a 2 1/2 inch sash brush and you can cut a straight line to a razor's edge

I have to agree with the both of you. I am also a painter 8 years. Prep my walls. Then caulk, wipe, let dry then cut in with a sash brush. The only time I use tape is when the trim work is already finished. And I am only Painting the walls so i put the tape on the top of trim to stop splatters getting onto the already finished trim.

NEVER TYPE WITH ALL CAPS!

30 yrs' painting, always willing too learn new methods. Personally. I paint trim/doors w/o tape 1st, keeping walls as my cut in line. Another trick for large voids and cracks: mix oil base primer with commercial whiting making a malleable paste-like coating to fill in deep cracks usually in historic applications. let cure for as long as possible, sand w.220 or kerosene (cheaper than mineral spirits and yes, there is a lingering odor, but works wonderfully with soft nylon rag.) Paint with a smile...

My mom stopped using tape a long time ago and just improved on her cutting (which isn't near perfect at all). And the main reason is because of the bleed through the tape on uneven surfaces. Because of this video I can now myself do it, and then show my mom. Great video.

So this was a rough textured wall, you don't need to do this on a smooth wall do you? Sorry I am not going to spend almost 50 minutes watching someone talk about masking tape. If he answered that question, sorry.

Yeah cool way to paint a crisp line but why don't you just say what you mean? 10 minutes would be fine dude.

Some of us who are new to this, appreciate the detail he goes into. If it's too long for a viewer, they always have the option of quitting or jumping ahead. But if it's too short, without pertinent info, there isn't another option for that viewer, right? ~:-)
