    Jeremy, wow! Thanks for yet another excellent video. This leads to a weird confession. Lots of people have binge watched "Game of Thrones" or "The Crown." This week I'm binge watching "Practical Painting." That leads to a question about two of your past videos that has a bearing on a project I'm eager to start. In your Aug 2021 video about SW Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel, you endorsed that paint as your "Go To" trim paint, replacing your previous go to trim paint, SW Duration. Then in your Aug 2022 video on the way to paint closets, you recommend SW Duration semi-gloss as your "standard trim paint." I'm getting ready to prime new wood window trim with SW premium wood primer, and am about to select an SW trim paint to follow the primer. We'll be using spring loaded "cafe" curtain rods in a number of the older looking country-style windows, putting long-term pressure on the trim. Like most windows, these windows have lots of vertical trim, so paint running is certainly possible. Which SW trim paint is likely to work out best: your "Go To" Emerald Urethane trim paint or your "standard" Duration Trim paint used as a country satin (as you suggested in another video) instead of a more modern semi-gloss? Or should we give up on the country look satin and go for a semi-gloss for durability in ether Duration or Emerald Urethane?

  • @SuperVassarBrothers

    @SuperVassarBrothers

    Жыл бұрын

    Thanks again for watching the videos. We have big plans for 2023. If I were you I would go with Emerald Urethane. It dries harder and is more durable. The Premium wood primer will help a lot. As of right now, we are using Emerald Urethane for all our trim paint. The Duration semi gloss is great, doesn't drip is much, but doesn't dry as hard. Good luck!

    Thank you for this video. I had a question regarding priming. I think the original closet paint was oil-based and I am going to repaint with a latex paint. Should I sand the closet surfaces and then reapply a latex primer first? Thanks again!

  • @SuperVassarBrothers

    @SuperVassarBrothers

    Жыл бұрын

    Hmmmm, it would be unusual that the wall paint would be oil-based, but let’s assume that it is. Sand it with at least 150 grit sandpaper then see if your latex primer sticks. If it doesn’t, then you’ll notice it pooling. If it doesn’t stick then you may need to prime the walls with an oil based primer then use whatever wall paint you’re going to use.

    Seeking advice on transforming a coat closet. How long should you wait in-between coats for the baseboards, ceiling and walls? I want to paint the ceiling flat white and use satin paint for the closet. Thanks in advance!

  • @SuperVassarBrothers

    @SuperVassarBrothers

    Depends on the conditions but you can re-coat once the paint is dry to the touch. Usually 1-2 hours after the first coat. You can also run a fan to scoot things along. The trim and the wall paint will dry slower than the flat paint.

    Do you reinstall the shelving? Probably not your job… curious to know when to do after paint? Or ideas on what to install and recommendations

  • @SuperVassarBrothers

    @SuperVassarBrothers

    Жыл бұрын

    The client had new shelving installed after we finished painting. A lot of the time we reinstall any shelving that the client wants put back, but sometimes they have new shelving units installed. As far as recommendations go, I'd start with thinking through what the purpose of the closet is. What are you going to be using it for and so forth. Then select and install the type of shelving or hanging units that would accomplish that purpose.

    How long do you need to wait after the final coat on the trim before you can tape?

  • @SuperVassarBrothers

    @SuperVassarBrothers

    2 жыл бұрын

    We will wait 4 hours. We are under the gun for time so we push faster than we probably should. A day is preferable, but we do it in 4 hours and its fine. If the paint tears at all we touch it up and no one can tell.

    I just had a bunch of drywall repairs done over years of existing paint. How do you keep from having the different textures show in your final paint.

  • @SuperVassarBrothers

    @SuperVassarBrothers

    Жыл бұрын

    You wanna make sure you sand the repaired areas and that the spackle / mud was feathered out into the existing walls. Sand it, prime it, then repaint. That’ll give you the best shot at it blending together although you make still have a slight texture difference where the repairs are.

    What is the difference between wood putty And spackle and caulk? All I know about caulk is it you have to redo it around your sink a lot If I want to learn everything from scratch is there a channel where I could start and watch every video from the beginning? Thank you I try to teach myself from KZread but yours is the first time I've been able to understand what's going on

  • @SuperVassarBrothers

    Thanks for the comment Lisa! Wood putty is used to fill holes usually in painted trim and woodwork from nails. Spackle (also sometimes referred to as joint compound) is used to fill holes in drywall and repair drywall. Caulk is used for filling gaps between trim and the wall as well as a variety of other uses. Here’s a link to how we paint a room. I have smoke stains in my closet at a house we just bought. Kilz restoration seems to be doing a pretty decent covering in most of the house but should I hit the closet with some of that oil spray Kilz where I can see staining?

  • @SuperVassarBrothers

    @SuperVassarBrothers

    Жыл бұрын

    I would recommend hitting those spots with the oil Kilz. If it’s small enough to spray it with the cans then you can use those. If the stains are larger, then I believe you can get oil Kilz in quarts and roll it. BIN shellac also works really well for smoke stains. They sell that at Home Depot as well.

    There are a variety of putties and spackle that’ll work. You’ll have to sand a bit either way. I’d recommend a low shrink spackle or lightweight spackle. It dries quick and is easy to sand. Sherwin Williams or any hardware store will have some.

  • @SuperVassarBrothers

    @SuperVassarBrothers

    Promar ceiling paint only comes in flat. Semi-gloss ceiling paint is not really a thing. And yes we did the ceiling and the walls with Promar Ceiling paint. For the trim and doors we used a semi-gloss trim paint. Our current favorite is the Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel. Duration semi-gloss is also a solid option.

    Thanks so much! I decided on a semi gloss for all the closets based on other videos. I have greatly enjoyed you sharing your experience and knowledge. It has been so helpful. I was able to snag the ProMar ceiling paint for our ceilings. We had started a whole house painting job(very inexperienced). Three bedrooms, hallway, large living/dining, and breezeway. Decided on Sherwin Williams paint...and right now is there 35% off sale, very happy bout that. They suggested the Eminence for the ceilings, but I went in after watching your videos and asked for ProMar...he said we keep it in the back for contractors, but after some discussion sold it to me!!! I love it, so happy with it...much, much better than the Eminence. When I went back to get closet paint they didn't have the semi gloss in the Duration, since that's what you liked I wanted it, so he upgraded me at no additional charge to the top of the line Emerald. I was hesitant bc I felt all the experts liked Duration better, but how could I say no to the Cadillac of paint, lol. I should mention we started out buying 5 gallon bucket of Cashmere which we used on the bedrooms, hallway, and breezeway. I might still get to try Duration in the kitchen and bath tho, not sure. Thanks again... couldn't have done near as good without your videos 👍😊

    You can definitely give it a go, but the result may not be what you're looking for. I suppose it depends on whether or not you're interested in giving yourself a challenge of this sort, or if your time is better served making money elsewhere and then paying someone to do it. Punch around on our channel a bit more for instructionals and see if this is the sort of thing you think you could well if you applied yourself.
