    Thank you for the great video. My husband and I will be have reservations for dinner in a few weeks and we are now really excited. We plan to take the bus from San Sebastian.

    I'm sure you will love it. But, you might want to take the train, rather than the bus. It's much faster, and really easy and inexpensive (if you don't mind about a 5- to 10-minute walk to get to the restaurant). We're sure you will love it. We did.

    We just recently went and had pretty much the meal you had. It was truly amazing. Definitely the best steak we’ve had. The leeks were a revelation.

    Thanks for sharing another amazing meal. I imagine the steaks served are grass fed also. If I ever visit Spain, my dietary restrictions will have to go wayside.

    I don't know if they are grass fed, but you're probably right. They really were some of the best steaks I'd ever had.

    I think I’m going there in a few weeks (awaiting reservation confirmation) - what sort of bill am I expecting there for the meal you had?

    It's been awhile since we were there, but I think the bill was around $110 for the two of us. I don't remember for sure, but it was not so expensive that it stuck out in our minds.

    Nice video, thank you. It's usefully informative and I appreciate your relatively low key style. A couple of Qs: How did you order your steak to be cooked, e.g., medium rare ("al punto" or "en su punto")? Per how you ordered, did the steak reflect that? Also, how far ahead did you make your reservation (via website, email or phone call)? Thanks for any information. I've got relatives in Pau, France - not so far away - and a steak at Casa Julian seems an overnight dream dinner within possibility.

    They never asked us what temperature we wanted the steak, but virtually all Spanish steaks are cooked rare to medium rare. But, I guess that, if you wanted it more well done than that, you could ask (before eating Txuletas in Spain, I never ordered steak less than medium rare. But now, when in Spain, I just eat it the way they cook it). Still, we truly appreciate the Spanish style of cooking them, so we go with what they feel they do best. We made our reservation about a month in advance. I think we set it up over the internet from their webpage, but I can't remember. It is certainly worth the drive from Pau, and maybe a night in Tolosa or San Sebastian (which is where we were staying -- San Sebastian is a gourmand's dream). In fact, Bar Nestor in San Sebastian also makes a great steak, but the pintxos bars there are worth spending a few nights. and, BTW, thanks for the compliment.

    in this establishment you cannot request the meat point, it is served the same to all diners. it is a place that does not have a menu either. One sits down to eat what the house offers.

    Is it better than Etxebari?

  • @steveandyoung

    @steveandyoung

    I can't say for sure. Every time we've been to Northern Spain, we've gone to the Etxebarri website and requested a reservation, and they never reply to our request. So, we've never eaten there. But everyone we have asked says that this is the best in the world, and our experience justifies the reputation.

    they are different styles of cooking, Etxebarri already integrates more innovative ideas and at Casa Julian the cuisine is traditional.

    Oh, man! That's tough! Soda is the one thing I was able to cut, but I do love sweets. I cut out a lot of phosphorous-laden foods (yogurt, which I love, milk, and cheese) and started taking Tums as a phosphate binder to keep from getting where you are.
