In the games he can actually talk, we don't get to see his speech bubbles and we only get to hear the occasional hi and other noises, but other characters reference him talking to them. It's the same situation as Link before Skyward Sword where characters would talk him and he'd talk back, we just wouldn't have any idea what Link said. However in the anime it literally is because he's a baby. Edit: What the heck happened in the replies? I remember a couple months ago going "I'm not dealing with this" and now there's more????? If you want evidence then it's heavily implied through the text bubbles that Kirby is talking to Elfilin and I believe a few other people, in Kirby's return to Dreamland it's more vague but in the 25th anniversary game Kirby and Magolor are implied to have talked, in a lot of the side games (excluding Kirby's Avalanche because no one thinks that's canon) Kirby is implied to talk, there's the Kirby drama CD, and then there's smash which while it is a different series, is produced by HAL Laboratories and Sakurai and the Kirby series has repeated made parts of it into Kirby Canon. I'm not saying he's great at speaking, and I'm not saying he does it often, but there is a ton of evidence for him being able to hold a conversation. We know he isn't mute. We know he understands what other people are saying. We know that he knows how to read and write (albeit poorly) and that he's smart enough to talk.

@@kirbywenttofightgoku4649 kirby saying his own name changes nothing. Kirby can say simple single words and even says his own name multiple times in the anime. Also elfilin responds the same way to clawroline who canonically only talks in meows, so it means nothing.

Depending on the canon, Kirby can in fact speak. He can speak fluently in the novels, can say like 8 words in the anime other than "Poyo" (Like 11 in the Japanese version since he says "Galaxia Sword Beam!" that one time), and is implied to be capable of childlike speech in the games but never shows it.

@@sav3133 not confirmed. I was reading a translated version of a kirby manga and the first line was something like "this manga takes place in a alternate universe, and lots of them have a specific setting like kirby clash. There is zero confirmation on the canonicity of the anime.

My theory: Given that Kirby's only a baby, and babies can be on their first stage of trying to talk, I think Kirby's just learning how to talk. I know he can in fact talk normally in the Japanese novels and Kirby's Avalanche, and to the extent in my headcanon (he still uses his poyo language though), but this is just my 'dumb' theory of why Kirby isn't able to speak.

He does talk. His poyo type of speech does have patterns of being a coherent language much like dolphins. Yes creepily enough dolphins clicking and whistling have signs of being a language. Going so far as to having clicks for specific handlers and food. Being able to click sentences and even ask for certain fish by specific name based off their own language. Kirby has no trouble communicating with his friends who must know his language.

I think while Kirby can Speak its more like the Language of a 3 Year old so its not full sentences but more like he trys to but its Probably full with Word Holes but you can definetly understand what he means by both Words and Body Language
