A bad habit to have when learning to Ollie is to stomp the back of the skateboard into the ground with your foot, right before the back of the board is about to hit the ground you have to quickly pull your foot up so your not making contact with the board when the back hits the ground. I recommend trying to Ollie without sliding at first because most of an Ollie is the pop, and the slide just levels it out. Once you have popping down just practice sliding, then put them both together and it should be perfect.

Why does no one mention timing in ollie tutorials? Get in ollie position, as soon as your knees are at the lowest point you want them to be, push down hard enough on the tail that you hear it hit the ground, AS SOON AS YOU HEAR THE KNOCK OF THE TAIL On THE PAVEMENT, drag your foot up like a millisecond after, then jump as you're doing it, the board should level out while you'r in the air. Don't worry about getting super high right now, just get form down. AND ALWAYS WATCH YOUR FEET. Don't look away for a second. 3 years later: One thing I forgot to say was while you're jumping, be conscious of bringing your back foot up and high enough so the board does the full level out maneuver.

Just landed my first ollies. I think the main thing that helped me was that it is actually the sliding foot which due to friction brings the board up. Not the back foot as much. Back foot pops it but the front foot is what pulls the board up.

Aaron you're the kinda person who i want to be not because you're an amazing skater, but because of what you've done for the skateboarding community, you've used your skill to gain a following but you dont use your fame for greed, you use it to make the world a better place, this video for example, do you think any professional who does everything for themselves could make a 9 minute video encouraging and helping other people who got into skating because of you. You're awesome dude. Thanks for everything you do. To all of the braille crew.

Just from that 2 weeks I have gained more progress than I have thought than anyone else had. In the 3rd week of my skateboarding skills, I tried to kickflip but my flick is kind of low so I still haven't gotten it. Sad to say that board of mine got broken. I'm planning to buy one this month, tho. I just hope that I still got it.

Joe Morgan bend your knees. You have to actually jump when you ollie. Instead of sliding your foot up the board, if you just spread your feet when you bend your knees to jump, the board with follow your front foot. Toe control is important when you get flip tricks etc.

My dude I'm getting back into skateboarding after 11 years (although I use my cruiser for commuting for the last 5 years with university) and these tips like balancing are really useful. I'm getting better with balance and feel my calves aching a bit which feels like because I'm engaging them more. Since I'm documenting my progress, I noticed that I'm not doing the slide right as you pointed out. so thank you so much! It's also see you teach this in the goofy stance since that's how I surf and skate so that made a massive difference to visual see how my feet would be. Sorry for the long comment I just found this super useful and really appreciate it a lot.

I feel like a lot of it is training your muscles. I just got back into skating at the age of 31, skated through highschool, and used a cruiser for a bit in my early 20s. I never progressed when i was younger because i was too scared, but i could ollie a curb, and kick flip a curb, not much else. Recently getting back into it and after gaining about 70 pounds since my teenage years, i have found that all the muscles i used for skating are just weak and i am out of shape. When youre a kid, you dont really notice it too much, but now im seeing it has a lot to do with being in shape, and training your muscles, at least for me anyway. I have been watching and studying, skating and braille videos, i myself have been making fast progress using techniques and exercises both on and off my skateboard. Ride every day, all day, i literally have a skateboard under my desk at work, that i move around with my feet all day. It seems ridiculous and excessive to some, but the proof is in the pudding, the more youre on your board, the better you will get. If youre out of shape, try some leg and core workouts, jump up and down things, get that body movin! it will help!

Challenge accepted. I've given up skating at least a dozen times since I got my first and only board in 1989 because I cannot ollie. Braille has given me a bit of hope that I can learn basics so I will tape myself trying to ollie. I drag my foot up and never get my tail off the ground after the pop.

3:10 if you do ballet then you’d also be comfy and familiar with turning your foot like that. i never knew how much ballet could come in handy until i started to try new things.

I haven't watched the video yet, but I have some things to say here. First off, I haven't skated in a couple years due to where I live not being a friendly place for skating. There's no skateparks within fifty kilometers of here, and I basically have to stop during the winter because it gets very cold. Anyway, I did have a teacher for a while, who told me I have noodle legs. I'm a tall guy, I stand at 206 centimeters, which is about six foot nine. I've needed to spend a while getting my proverbial sea-legs back on a skateboard since it's been so long since I last skated. And before you ask, no, I can't ollie. I assume it's for the same reasons, my legs are not attuned to this yet. Either way, I'd like to thank you, and this channel for helping me get back into skateboarding, and since summer's on it's way, I'll leave some progress reports when I can.
