So in some ways, I get it. As a white person who only recently really started educating myself about harder to grasp anti-rascist concepts like white fragility, I've realized that I've been THAT person before and though I've made effort to change, it's easy to imagine how I might have rejected certain information out of hand because it felt damaging to my self-concept as a good person. Not everyone is ready or willing to confront the baggage that has essentially been socialized into their minds through hidden social/psychological processes, and while I don't think this excuses homophobia/transphobia, it definitely helps me appreciate how it might be a struggle for some people to overcome, especially if they want to. Homophobic pride is kind of like a twisted version of this where instead of challenging their own views (which is hard and requires personal growth) they make up a reason why it's not their problem, when it in fact, is. Long story short, I think this only really ends with systemic change, increased education and visibility for queer people, and the demise of hetero and cis normativity as cultural mores. For my part, I always call out homophobia or transphobia when I see it, and maje it clear that I am gay and don't tolerate that shit. Some people will withdraw, but others start to examine themselves, and I want to encourage that kind of positive growth.

@@Rupert3434 I agree, I actually used to be homophobic only 6 or even less years ago. I was taught from a very young age that being lgbtqia+ is wrong and I believed it. Then I saw someone I looked up to come out, and I had to rethink what I believed. I took SO LONG to get better and even now I’m still trying to improve myself. It is and was so hard and there was points where I thought I was a good ally even though I wasn’t. I don’t regret it at all because now I realize that I might be lesbian.

@@Rupert3434 I definitely agree, because when I was younger I at first didn't mind if people were gay. Then when I was thirteen, I remember feeling angry and just plain weirded out by the fact, when I found out about public figures coming out. It didn't make sense to me at the time, how I didn't have a problem, when it came to Elton John, Ellen Degeneres, Adam Lambert, or etc. I felt angry at Jane Lynch, and Suzie Orman. One thing for sure when I was fourteen, I become really frustrated with boys my age having girlfriends, or just by how visiaully attractive I saw them. During the summer of my Freshman year, I realized that I was bisexual, and it felt extremely difficult to understand, how I could be attracted to someone of the same sex as well. It takes time, patience, and lots of rewiring to change your perspective on something or someone, when you've been privileged to not experience certain things (holding hands, kissing, and etc). I took being straight (at the time); for granted.

Yeah it's like when rich people say it's so hard to be rich when it actually isn't if they don't want to be rich donate all of their money to charity or the poor or something I think the people who truly have no real problems that everyone can understand actually create their own problems like everyone can relate to racism everyone can relate to sexism everyone can relate to mental health issues but only wealthy people can relate to having too much money to spend in 50 lifetimes my view is everyone needs to stop creating problems where there are none

@@sluttyMapleSyrup To be honest, I do see the standpoint of these other people: I‘m taking Jehovas Witnesses as example, because I recently gathered a lot of information about them: They do not agree with homosexual actions. They do not agree with any sexual actions, actually, because they are viewed as sin in the bible. However, they should nor will not judge, nor will they discriminate nor treat lgbtq people differently, because the bible ALSO says love they neighbor and treat people the way you wish to be treated, therefore they will also follow that. So yeah, if it‘s something similar to that, I can actually see why and say „Yeah, you do you“. Edit: Won‘t talk bout politics tho, bc I think that would be actively trying to harm lgbtq people so yeah, I think that‘s a different cup of tea than my comment here

I was homophobic. Beind raised in a Muslim household made me naturally despise the existence of LGBT+ people. In my country, even talking about gay marriages could get you killed. People here see it as 'western propaganda' and although no one has EVER mentioned lgbt+ people to me when i was younger, it's pretty easy to tell what people think like here. The first time i was exposed to lgbt+ things was when i stumbled upon a lesbian ship in a fandom i'm really into. And liked the ship so much that i started standing with the "i disagree with gay people, but i wouldn't be mean or evil towards them. Just as they have to right to live freely, i also have the right to not agree with them." This thought process is fairly common for people like me, who learned to accept through the help fo the internet, on their own. So when i see people pull the "i would be respectful but donot agree" card i get hope within me that maybe this person would fall down the rabbit hole i fell into and start slowly respecting the lgbt+ movement. I'm really grateful that i have become more open minded and no longer bottle any internalized homophobia within me and I'm now a proud bisexual :D Edit: thank you for all the supportive comments. I also find it stupid and arrogant that people mention someone else as the authority on whom obeyed should be made so that other people do or not do something. The selfish and arrogant people want them to do it or don't do it, so that the chance that the others obeyed are higher than if they ask the others themselves with I want or don't want you to do this and that. these people are likely to disobey a stranger. With a deity or god as a mentioned authority who supposedly wants something, this is probably easier to achieve. What I find pretty selfish, if people do not hurt each other psychologically and physically, disadvantage each other or destroy our living space, it should be relatively irrelevant what other people do who have little to do with ourselves. Someone else to say that they don't like something, they even dare to say it and presume to know what a deity wants or doesn't want. People's belief in this deity is also used by people for their own purposes. If a deity found something important that people should or shouldn't do. Then this deity can tell people themselves and not that people come up with the idea of what a deity wants or not that can not correspond at all to what a deity wants.

If you've grown up around bigotry and hatred all your life, it's hard to unlearn and even if you don't want to think like that anymore, your first thoughts are still likely to be homophobic. That said, I feel that your first thoughts are more a reflection of the society that raised you, it's the thoughts that come after that reflect who you really are.

Not necessarily only that, media can have quite the impact on ones viewpoints as well. If you primarily use media where you come into contact with transphobic messages and statements without knowing much about this topic you might as well turn out homophobic without even knowing and thinking of yourself as the opposite. In my case without my Ex-Partner i wouldn't have noticed that some of the statements i made where quite transphobic even though i thought myself to be an accepting person. Only after they informed me about these statements and the transphobia in these statements i began really informing myself about those topics (as a cishet i never really felt the necessity to dig deeper into the topic and didn't know enough to notice my lack of Information). That is also how i discovered this channel.

Yup. First time I heard of anyone being "gay" were kids at school using it as an insult/mockery and even that was rare. I even had no idea what opinion my parents had because no one talked about it. So I thought those people were "weird" or whatever and quietly agreed with whatever sparse bigoted opinions I heard. Then slowly through fandoms and the internet (while learning more English because resources in English were more accessible) I learned more and with it slowly became accepting. And realized I was asexual 💜 It's a bit harder to get out of your bubble if you don't realize you're in one, but of course it's possible :)

Some of my judgmental/...-phobic thoughts came from "They shouldn't do it like that. Why can't they just be normal/just do xy instead?". I try to correct myself after that most of the time.

Their rational brain tells them there is nothing wrong with being gay but the instincts that were built up from childhood make them feel like there is. I hope they find the clarity to confront those instincts and realize they really are irrational and they can become more accepting people.

Yeah, like I feel like some of them are making a distinction between their feelings and their beliefs, like kinda in the same way I can be like "I was raised in a white rural conservative community, I *am* racist. But I find racism morally repugnant especially in myself and so it's something I'm constantly aware of and trying to fix or at least mitigate." There's an undercurrent of people who know how they're feeling is wrong or at least it's their problem not gay people's. Kinda in the old, like 90's way of "you don't have to like queer people, you just have to stop actively making their lives worse"? I think it's one of the problems with homophobia as a term. It brings to mind people who are afraid of spiders, not bigotry. You can be scared of spiders without instituting a spider genocide; it's okay to be sex-repulsed by things that aren't your kink up to and including sex as an idea. That's not the actual problem, yano? I don't care if you find two boys kissing gross, I care that people think they have the right to legally and socially and even physically punish people who gross them out. Karen hairstyles literally trigger me from past traumatic experiences, but I'm not trying to send Karens to conversion therapy to make them grow their hair out. I'm not bombing salons that permit the haircut. I'm not sending money to developing nations to lobby them to give Karens the death penalty. I don't care if you're uncomfortable, just don't be cruel and/or selfish about it. Go to therapy like an adult and deal with it. Otherwise, you're not scared you're deliberately being an asshole, stop pretending you aren't making a choice.

It is actually important that people deal with their repulsion towards gay people or minorities. You might say that only their actions matter and them being grossed out by gay kissing isn't an issue if their actions are supportive, but the entire issue with unconscious bias is that people unconsciously harm others _because_ they're disgusted/repulsed by them. Bias and bigotry still happens when you are repulsed by others, it's just more subtle and harder to notice. If someone wants to support a group of people they have to deal with BOTH unconscious bias (repulsion) AND explcit thoughts and actions.

My guess is that a lot of the people towards the beginning who are like "I'm homophobic but I don't want to be" or "I'm homophobic but I'm supportive" might just think homophobia is... being instinctively grossed out by two people of the same gender kissing? Like their gag reflex is involuntarily triggered at the sight, but they still think gays are nice people. And they think the reflexive aspect is the thing to be ashamed of. To which, speaking as a gay guy... some people just find PDA gross in general. I know I hated it growing up when it was all from straight people, and I tolerate gay PDA more because of how affirming it is. Gay PDA is pretty rare to see though, since most same-gender couples have legitimate worries about getting hate-crimed for even holding hands, so I understand if the visual tolerance is low for some straights. Y'all just gotta work on yourselves and build that up in your own time; if you don't *want* to be homophobic, then sooner or later you won't be. If you really _are_ supportive and don't want to hurt others or seed malice in another generation, and you *are* throwing your weight behind the queer community in a substantial and meaningful way rather than just empty words, then you won't have any trouble if you keep any "I just think it's gross" bull to yourselves. And I'm sure we can agree that the "real" homophobes, if you will, are the ones who have no interest in bettering themselves, letting other people live their lives, or supporting the queer community, gag reflex or not. The ones who instead blame their religion for why they're an asshole, or say "hate the sinner, not the sin" or "I want to pray for broken people" or "I'm just worried about your soul"; who double-down and say "it's my opinion and I have a right to that" like that shields them from criticism; who treat queer people as an affront to "feminism" or their woefully insecure masculinity; who say "it's mental illness" despite having zero credentials to make any kind of diagnosis and knowing it's been out of the DSM for decades; or who simply say "well _I_ think being gay is voluntary" because *they* wouldn't choose to be and they're too self-absorbed and short-sighted to consider that *_nobody_*_ would choose to be with such a big target on us so something else must be at play_ -- all the while acting on their disgust and hate behind closed doors, voting to strip LGBT+ protections in the vain hope that _maybe_ we'll all just flutter away or at least won't be where they can see us, if not actively spreading emotional abuse and physical violence towards the queer community. That includes the ones who say "I'm afraid to come out as homophobic to my friends" because they understand that it _is_ shameful. And there's really no point in trying to dignify their position by asking their "reasoning" for being homophobic. There _are_ no good reasons for bigotry, it's not _based_ in logic or reason.

Me a few years back relates to the "Is it bad I'm homophobic? I don't try to be but it just happens and I can't control it." Back then I tried to understand and be accepting, but I still sometimes had homophobic thoughts. Which then made me angry and uncomfortable with myself, because I couldn't shake it off. Like how hard is it just to be accepting? Luckily nowadays I am way more educated and can confidently say that I'm an ally. Acceptance might not come around as easily as planned, but I am sure that one is able to change if one just is willing to.

I think angry, homophobic, racist, transphobic, misogynistic people come from households with no love. I think they have that view because they were usually raised that way and they don't think love and homes are about love, they think it's about making some sort of deal like they're negotiating with a company or someone who's taken a hostage. And honestly, I think that's what it must feel like to be in one of those "homes".

First of all, congrats for coming out! About the bin problem, I'd probably just ask someone at school (like, the headmaster (?) etc) if they could maybe put bins in "your" toilet - the boys' toilet I assume - as well; not necessarily only for you, but bins are pretty important for anyone I think, like when you have a cold and want to clean your nose, or when you have a plaster, ... . So maybe explain your own situation roughly if you feel comfortable with it and also talk about how you think it's something that should be changed in general. Hope this might help, all the best for you :)

Hey Jamie! I wonder if you could do an uplifting video about Frozen 2’s song ‘Show Yourself’! There’s a couple of seconds where the background looks like a trans flag, and its a lovely song about becoming yourself! It even says ‘open your door, don’t make me wait, one second more’ and ‘show yourself, step into your power, throw yourself, into something new, you are the one I’ve been waiting for’. Thanks for reading!!

I feel like when someone says "I'm homophobic but I don't want to be" they mean that they feel some sort of internal uncomfortability with gay people. Like a sort of prejudice that has been pushed on them or a societal feelings. Like they sort of aren't used to gay people. I think that's what they mean when they say that they don't want to be. Sorta like when someone that is a member of privileged group realizes they have been offensive in the past or done microagressions. Like they want to be supportive but they have these uncomfortable feelings towards it.

I think someone identifying and admitting they have a problem and understanding why their view is problematic is a step in the right direction. I’m hopeful that some of these people admitting they are homophobic will move on to educate themselves to the point that their homophobia goes away. I feel like they are asking for help in a round about way.

Harry and Louis from one direction are rumoured to be dating/married … there are many theories and proofs to debunk their relationships at the moment and that do proof that they are together… that’s probably why they kept popping up lmao

The ones who seemed ashamed to be homophobic, it makes me think of my dad. He was raised in a very religious Puerto Rican household and homophobia was displayed blatantly. Also tons of classic Hispanic machismo. Even as a kid he thought those views were wrong, and he still does. He has me, a gay trans son and he has been fantastic and supportive. But he also has a knee-jerk reaction of disgust to, specifically, gay men. He was taught to think that way from the time he was a small child. He immediately slaps himself mentally and recognizes that it's ridiculous to think that way, but he's admitted to me a few times that he always has that homophobic reaction initially. And he is ashamed of it. I wouldn't call my dad homophobic at all, because his actions and his morals don't reflect that. I've even seen him call out other people for being horribly homophobic at squadron parties. The Pacific Fleet in the 90s was not very LGBTQ-friendly.

Tbh I was confused about trans ppl, like I couldn't wrap my brain around the concept. I ended up here (this is a lil over a yr ago) and instantly I realized that I was making it out to be this "crazy" thing, when in reality the concept is easy to digest once you get past the emotions. You and Shaaba stole my heart in 0.32 seconds and now I'm a loud advocate! Trans men are men! Trans women are women! 😘
