    The scariest and saddest thing is, is that my uncle sourced him as "an unbiased news channel", after he called my source channels biased... (I am aware that mine are biased, but everything is biased, let's be honest.) Along with that, he also called "Charlie Kirk, Candice Owens, Steven Crowder, Australia news, Tucker Carlson (Fox News) [...] unbiased news channels". To be fair, this is a guy [my uncle], that about 10 years ago, didn't believe in the moon landing, so, he's come a long way. More like he's working his way through the ages. *sigh*

    Exactly. Life is not about everyone agreeing with each other, or never being offended. Sometimes it makes me wonder if they aren't trans/questioning but terrified of NOT having that "you must conform to gender norms" gun to their head so they now try to convince everyone that it's there so they don't have to make any hard decisions that might upset their whole lives and how they see themselves. Or they're just desperate to be on top so they otherize us trans people to make themselves feel more special by insisting they're the ones under attack. (ie: gaslighting. "you aren't oppressed, I'm the one that's being forced to change so I'M actually the oppressed one and your struggles are actually nothing when I have to change ANYTHING")

    2:55 "Why would do people feel like their gender is being taken away from them?" Because cis-heteropatriarchy literally defines masculinity as domination over the "other" which is Woman - by allowing a diversity of genders beyond simply Man or Woman, and by refusing to allow Man to dominate all other genders, you do thereby remove the cis-heteropatriarchal notion of Manhood. So - yes, their gender is being taken away, but only because they are defining that gender exclusively in terms of violence and domination. (This is also why TERFs can never be feminists - because in order to be transphobic they necessarily affirm the gender binary, which is defined in terms of violence and domination, and so they support and endorse cis-heteropatriarchy.)

Apparently, mentioning something they *should* care about is manipulating them into caring about it… The mental gymnastics he had to do to feel like the victim (and then later blame us for playing the victim card) astounds me.

    Actually, the "red football is not a football" thing has kinda been done. During the Spring and Autumn period there was a School of Names in China that was apparently kind of a joke because we have other contemporary scholars laughing at their views. Han Fei in particular made sure to make it clear that their "the white horse is not a horse" did not meet the standards of Chinese philosophical discourse of the 3rd century BCE.

  • @SammyLammy1D

  • @MrHodoAstartes

    @MrHodoAstartes

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@SammyLammy1D Yes. So the School of Names is a largely lost philosophical group that focused heavily on logical paradoxes and other such lofty pursuits. But since it was a time of warring kingdoms the philosophers and scholars of the time were largely dependent on the favor of a patron who is perpetually at war. With the effect that they would constantly badmouth one another in their missives to prove how their own school of thought was most useful. Naturally, a school of deep dialectic brain teasers and paradoxes was not really what the day called for. So what became popular with kings was on the one hand the Confucians whose traditionalist-moralist teachings largely affirmed the social order of the day, and the School of Laws, whose prolific writers were ministers and ambitious officials, and who propagated effectively absolute monarchy with a robust bureaucratic underpinning and tips and tricks to survive court intrigue while ruling with an iron fist. The last point in particular made the School of Laws VERY unpopular outside the palaces, which is why it remained the secret teaching of the Emperors, even as it's principles governed the court. The first Emperor tried to break the Confucians by burning their books and allegedly also their philosophers, but that's the Confucians writing the history books. Anyway, the School of Names was a popular target for their sophistry and idle riddles among everyone who wanted to present themselves as a more practical thinker. So their weaker aphorisms were projected onto real-life situations. Han Fei tells of an occurrence of a School of Names scholar who was accosted by the town guard for riding his white horse in a pedestrian area, in which he tried to argue that the sign reads "no horses", but his "white horse" was not included in this because it's written differently. Which naturally did not work on account of how categories work and the guard being interested in public order over sophistry.

    That "weaken your society" thing made me think of Mao era China, where people had to wear similar (blue) uniforms. It's been a while dince I took my history lessons, but I believe the point was to make the nation stronger by make the people unified. Totalitarianism and individuality don't mesh well. A strong people may appear uniform, but for an individual who doesn't fit in for one reason or another, it is a nightmare. But with that logic, if there were no genders or differing sexual identities but just humans, would everyone just mix freely? That logic quickly leads to a unified people of pansexual non-binary folks. I can live with that. I'd actually fit in for once! 😀

And my idea of bisexuality is pan-esque: it's the person and their mind I'm attracted to, not the body parts.) I'd fit in quite well into the non-binary pansexual world I described, it sounds a lot more relatable to me than this world where you're expected to be either or, with societal norms forcing you into molds I personally have never been able to fit in.

    I love how people think that accepting trans people weakens our society when it literally does the opposite. Allowing people to transition without discrimination or judgement creates better mental health outcomes. Better mental health means that trans people can more readily contribute their ideas and labor to improving society. Even if all you care about is the labor market and profit, it's better just to accept people.

    Wow, the one with the women over 30 who don't lie about their age is riddled with so many insecurities and male gaze cringe. I have always hated this social norm that on a woman's birthday everyone makes banter about how she is perpetually turning (insert some age in the 20s). We all age and grow as people, to say otherwise feels like any woman that reaches 30 should keel over cause their existance from that point is meaningless since they no longer fit the social fantasy of "youthfull beauty". No one could pay me enough to want to return to my 20 year old self, goodness so much cringe I am happy I outgrew.

    Hindu myth nerd here, there is actually a story about a king who was bigender (androgyne), his name was Ila (ila) he had a wife and a husband. He fathered children through his wife and mothered children through his husband. And this is not a regional story, it is discussed in most of the Puranas (holy texts) and nothing wrong is said about the situation. P.S.: The husband was Budh the god of the planet Mercury (not to be confused with Gautam Buddh - founder of Buddhism) and in some versions Budh himself is said to be transgender. There are many more stories and events, there's even a Wikipedia page search : Hinduism and LGBT topics.

It is about a non binary pal who had a mental breakdown in a class and screamed "No soy tu compañera, soy tu compañere", it doesn't make a lot of sense in english because it is literally "i'm not your classmate, i'm your classmate", "compañera" is the femenine way of calling a classmate and "compañere" is the nb way. @@SaeSaeyoungyoung @김새영 I know you didn't talk about English. I obviously did not word my orginal comment clearly. I was just stating how confusing gendered nouns and adjectives are to native English speakers when English has very few gendered nouns and adjectives. The entire idea of gendering nouns and adjectives can feel very new for native English speakers even though we do have gendered nouns like lion/lioness, waiter/waitress, etc. Those words are not really explained as gendered nouns/adjectives to native English speaking folks since typically the masculine form is used as a gender neutral form as well ie lion, waiter, etc Like you talk pretty directly about how in English the sentence translates the exact same way, but in Spanish it has a gender component to it (feminine vs gender neutral in this case). I was agreeing with your overall sentiment that native English speakers wouldn't get the context in a translated dialogue script without that additional explanation about how the Spanish language works and how non-gendered adjectives and nouns exist but aren't talked about oftentimes when being taught to native English speakers. The same can be said about English neopronouns and the entire concept of a singular usage of "they/them". I've spoken with a lot of folks who weren't native English speakers who couldn't understand the use of the singular "they". I mean gendered nouns and adjectives still exist in both languages but when it comes to prominently having gendered articles, nouns, and adjectives Spanish, Italian, French and many other languages have rules that differ drastically and require more than an "a/an" or a "the" in front of a noun to indicate what the plurality of the noun, is ie "el/la vs los/las".
