There is one crucial point you omitted here. Which likely made Lewandowski the way he is. The man was released by Legia Warsaw at 17, told he wasn't good enough to make the first squad. I'm sure this played a huge part in his mentality and taught him that the only person he can rely on is himself, not any club.

Lewandowski was nobody at that time. He had to prove himself in Poland, he had to prove himself at Dortmund where he joined as a sub, not main striker, constantly improving his skills as a mature player.

Will never forget the time he scored 5 goals in 9 minutes after coming on as a sub. Machine is the right word to describe him.

Same can be said for his stint at Dortmund. Even before his departure to Munich, he had friction with parts of the squad and made it clear, ultimately playing football is his profession and the club is his employer not his family. That's fair. It is a personal choice I respect, with "loyalty" you leave a legacy behind, an organic tie between you and a club and their millions of fans, Robbery had that, Beckenbauer, Müller, Rummenige, Hoeness, they all had that. This tie would make you a trainer or even a president when the right time comes. Or you just dont care or it is not important to you, what the club did for you instead you only focus what you did for them. Lewa did exactly that, so its his choice, he could have been the "Polish" president of a German club, instead he will probably be booed by some Barca fans, if he doesnt accept a salary cut next summer...

It's not like he didn't like it and played only to feed his family/himself and pay bills and mortgage like a normal worker. It's more likely he thought Bayern was the best shot for him to win and succeed in Europe and so he did. We don't know what he liked or not, but if he didn't like Bayern Munich he would have left way earlier. He liked playing for them and with them, but without too emotional attach. It was a good place to work for him, but just a job nonetheless. If Real Madrid didn't have Cristiano Ronaldo he would have probably left for Real Madrid.

Despite everything, he was still arguably the best free transfer of the 21st century. And he should have won two Ballon d´Ors by now (2020 and 2021), but Covid and Messi winning the Copa America for the first time prevented that from happening.

Bayern Fan from Germany here: While Lewa may never had that passionate love for the Club like Robbery for example, he still is a very beloved Club Icon. He always gave his all put up numbers that are absolutely insane and broke records everybody thought would never be broken. As you said yourselves, he's a machine that only strives for the best. Right now there's still pain, and some anger over his rather awkward exit, but I'm 1000% sure in 10, 15, 20 years time we'll look back at him just as fondly as we're looking back now on Robben, Ribery, Beckenbauer, Gerd Müller and so many others. And while I'm very far from being a Barca Fan, especially now with their treatment of their players, I really hope Lewa can achieve some more amazing years there and maybe even finally get his more than well deserved Ballon d'Or.

But that was the point, if he came in working late in practice, giving advice & talking with the reserve and youth players or even acted like he cared about the club, he would have been revered. I haven't been following Bayern for several years but if you just came to the club for individual glory & accolades instead of helping the Club win, then Bayern fans will not be fond of you. The best example I can think of is Gareth Bale at Madrid. He helped the club win trophies, but he didn't have a relationship with the fans 😔 The German football always had that team first mantra.

You're teammates probably didn't enjoy his attitude by disparaging them with his display of frustration (towards them) and showed their this pleasure with him by not setting him up. His attitude is very similar to Gareth Bale at Madrid. German football is characterized as a team effort. When a player shows his display when a teammate doesn't pass to him or makes a mistake, that does not show well for him. I have not followed Bayern since Klinsmann was the coach, but I do know that the club will treat you respect if you show act accordingly. If Stefan Effenberg can be rated higher than him, then he must be a bad egg. And yes, you're allowed to have personal aspirations, but your personal ambitions shouldn't be put before your club.

You can clearly see in coman's goal in the final how Lewy is marked by 3 players and coman is free, just because of him, he indirectly creates the goals which normal people don't understand

I would say even more. Lewy's change of playstyle around 19/20 could impact why strikers are back in business. Remember that there were very few of the prospects among the strikers prior to pandemic. World class only Kane, Lewy maybe Suarez, but some didn't even got into UEFA TOTY when the entire front was say Neymar, Messi, Ronaldo none of them typical strikers at the time. Lewy and CR I think shown how to reinvent striker position for newer generations and sort of pivoting in the team. Of course it was really good with CR being still in form to do so and Lewandowski having Gnabry, Coman, Perisić, Coutinho, Kimmich all in great form. He had deliverance. Next year he was unlucky as Bayern lost in UCL without him on pitch. Last year however Bayern was dramatically weak, with very bad depth of squad, players like Roca, Sarr or Choupo-Moting being first sub choices. It's sad how Bayern said goodbye to their legend. However I believe that this end up let Bayern make some really good transfers and even if they lack striker, which of course will be ruining their season, they would anyways at some point need to reinvent themselves. It's same case for Barca after Messi's departure, it took them to this season to make up squad good enough to put all puzzles at the place. Same for Real, they needed to find new leader - Benzema. He also profits of the change in tactics globally. I would say even more than Lewandowski. And now we have all those pivotal striker roles like Benz, Lewy, Kane and a new age of players like Osimhen, Haaland or Vlahović who aren't only goalscorers but also can provide depth in play.

Muller and Lewa partnership was least as least as, if not more, impactful than Ribery and Robben. Both Muller and Lewa helped each other reach the peak performances of their careers.

Ironic that German didn't feel the connection to a player that was described as lacking emotion, straight to the point, a machine and put the task above all else. I'd say these are qualities that can be attributed to German work ethic

Good point 😉. I'd still say we just have different ways to show emotion. And loyalty to a club is still highly valued with fans. And like the video said, he was never emotional about a club bur a professional worker. Fair, but nothing to make people love you. Thomas Müller for example is much more loved for that reason plus he's a Bavarian himself which probably helps.

But even in Germany, football is not work, at least not for the fans, and if a player gives off the impression that it is just work to him, then fans not everybody might like that. Personally i prefer an honest footballer who does his job over a "passionate" player who changes clubs every other season and pretends he has now arrived at his favorite club, and he has always been a fan, yadiyadiyada.

From a fans perspective I can say we loved him more than anything. He broke records and played so well to the point where you’d be shivering once you hear that he’s injured. I do think he’s atleast top 3 strikers of this generation and hope he continues to dominate at Barca

I think his legacy will age in the future as Bayern inevitably declines at some point. Fans will be reminiscent of Mueller-Lewa partnership that made them take the Bundesliga for granted.

Bayern wont decline in the coming years solely because of having great finances. As you have seen in the summer transfer window this year, whenever the team underperforms in regards to expectations (more than just winning the Bundesliga), they show their financial muscle to strengthen the team and becoming more of a contender for multiple trophies. And Bayern is unlikely to lose that financial edge anytime soon, as they aren't wasting huge sums of money like for example Barcelona while being not far off from the marketing and sponsor attractiveness of clubs like Barcelona, Manchester United etc. Also Nagelsmann is a coach who can adapt quite well and seems to have a great understanding with the team. He was brought in for the long haul, given more time than some of his predecessors + signing players suited to his philosophy and the overall chemistry of the team will ensure national dominance and international competitiveness for the foreseeable future.

This is not how Bayern works. We thought the exact same thing around 2015 when they had a lot of aging top performers. Lahm,Schweinsteiger,Ribery, Robben, they all were hitting their 30s and were still instrumental in the way Bayern played. And they managed to replace them all for under 40m combined (21m Coman, 8,5m Kimmich, 8m Gnabry, Free Goretzka). As much as this pains me, but Bayern is so well run and so far ahead of any Team in the Bundesliga, they will propably not decline until we have a Jürgen Klinsmann situation again.

8 years at Bayern (12 years in Germany) is a very long time. For me, the sale of Schweinsteiger and THE FREE TRANSFER of David Alaba were harder to understand than Lewandowski's. Also Ribery had asked to leave once, but Hoeneß persuaded him to stay put. I still love the guy, will always love the guy. It does make me chuckle how Barcelona are terrible in the Champions League this season.

German here: Maschine ("machine" from the Manuel Neuer quote at 2:26) is a relatively new very colloquial term that means something like "beast", especially used for unmatched athleticism. Used in that colloquial sense, it doesn't carry any of the connotations mentioned in the video like being a precise, but emotionless robot or anything like that. The rest of the video seems very much on point.

His general play against both Barca and Lyon was mediocre. Against Barca he would have a hat-trick if he could finish better and what easy chances they were. numbers don't tell the whole story and people are always going to expect much more from someone touted a Balon d'or contended or apparent winner. He thrashed tottenham and Chelsea but that was again a collective effort against very weak teams that year.

I've watched almost every single bayern game for 7 years now and this feels more like "lesser team mentality" if you ask me. He has never come across as cold to me, atleast not in this fashion described here. He has an incredible winning mentality and worked really hard out of possession, only outrun by the likes of Kimmich. If you are an out-and-out striker and a teammate whiffs a chance by shooting from 20 meters out instead of supplying the pass I'd be 100% frustrated too, to the point where it feels like they intentionally sabotage. Obviously that's not the case but the feeling remains and I think we can all imagine it. I prefer a winner like Lewa over a logo-kisser with half the yield (unless that's the point, like with a false nine). You could really see the bayern tactic change under Nagelsmann to a point when it frustrated even me seeing as they were no longer scoring as regular as before, more occasionally popping off in big number games but the "just-win" games got harder, and Lewa wasnt put in the right position as he used to. You could often see him drift out wide and deep, putting him away from where he needed to be, as he started the attack but the goal never came due to him being pushed deep. Like a Harry Kane but without the yield of Son to provide with. It's a shame Bayern never brought in Ziyech, he would have been able to put up Ronaldo-Özil numbers. In the end I'm sad he didnt retire in Bayern, it would have been proper, and I already see him as a club legend, and have done so for a few years now.

You've got a point. Lewandowski enjoyed Bayern managed by Hansi Flick who reinvented team's game after unfortunate Kovacs management. Bayern won with Flick 6 trophies in 1 season and all the players were really happy.Then everything began falling apart because of animosity between Salihamidzic and Flick who did not get required high leveled players as replacement for Perisic,Thiago, Coutinho and Alaba.Bayern's team which won CL championship was dismanteled. Hansi Flick was fired and took over German national team.Nagelsmann was hired and team's chemistry was gone.Under Nagelsmann management, Bayern team became pathetic shadow of that managed by Hansi Flick. Nagelsmann's idiotic experiments did not work in Bayern's favor and the players who enjoyed playing in team under Flick management..It looked like Nagelsmann wants to turn Bayern in RB Leipzig 2.0. Nagelsmann did not want striker ,he prefered game supported by wingers and high pressing of midfielders. Lewandowski did not fit to Nagelsmann vision of Bayern team at all. Thus Lewandowski is gone and Bayern coudn't close last 3 games (3 draws in the row - it never happened with Lewandowski on the pitch).

His last name is long and he is not the only players in the world with last name replaced by fans with nickname.Anyway,it happens mostly to spectacular players who are famous and internationally recognized .Thus,Polish fans will admire him as Lewandowski or Lewy while other fans will use shorter version of his name by cutting of last 6 or 7 letters i.e. Lewan or Lewa. I guess he accepts his fans choices in this matter.

How about putting it from Lewandowski point of view??? Bayern never really offered him a contract extension. They were planning to replace him with Halland. After all he had done for the club. Even after Halland deal failed Salihamidzic didn’t act either fast nor professional handling the situation….. Both sides are there to find guilty.

I understand the ideology behind this, but it's only partially true. As an avid Bayern fan for the past 15 years, I can say that, Lewandowski truly was loved at Bayern. His departure may not have been as emotional that of Robben, Ribery, Lahm or Schweini, but that doesn't mean true Bayern fans didn't understand his importance to the club. Even amongst a team full of amazing players, Lewandowski was the only truly elite superstar, and probably the biggest star Bayern have had in the last 30-40 years, and it's very widely known that Bayern in general is not very comfortable with the players who have that "superstar personality"

I think LewanGOALski is loved by almost every supporters of the club. But even with his excellent performances for years he'll not be loved more than manuel neuer, robbery, david alaba, joshua kimmich and especially Thomas Muller. Muller will always be the symbol of Bayern Munich for this generation.

The 5 goals in 9 minutes are something of football legend and fable and he hasn't yet retired. Idk, if we have to have a global game then as a non-Bayern fan I say sorry boys and girls over in Munich (how many of you are actually in Munich or have even been to Munich... well it's the modern global game, maybe I shouldn't care), I say you don't get to choose, he is a Bayern and Bundesliga legend, from an Arsenal fan, like it or lump it.

To be precise Lewandowski work really hard in clubs where he got under great coaches to become who he is right now. You can have talent but without working hard you will crumble. I read once story about Portuguese young player who rumored to be bigger talent than CR7 but people gave him so much money they spoiled him and now he play in regional leagues. Why did I wrote about him? He had everything but not surrounding which would help him improve and Lewandowski worked hard even in Poland to transfer to good club he went to Dortmund where he met Jurgen Klopp imagine it's your first coach in serious career man who is now becoming legend in Liverpool winning Premier League and Champions League. Later in Munich he meet all great coaches mentioned in video but also Heynckes was temporary coach too. They for sure changed him a lot and I believe Lewandowski said that Guardiola teach him a lot about football probably because of it he plays so good for Barcelona right now. I'm from Poland and sadly it's not our country who create great players it's that they have to be noticed at young age by scouts and reeducated in serious clubs. National team is completely different thing because in Poland we don't have anyone who can make good team out of all those great players. I think current coach might be one who can do it but we will see. I bet it's really hard for any coach in Poland to train national team when they have better careers than most of coaches. Probably this is why our federation hired Paulo Sousa because he was man with trophies but everything failed once he got big contract from Flamengo and flee there to just play like half a year and get fired.

you're not entirely wrong there, that would help for sure. But neither Robben nor Ribery were Germany world cup winners either, and the two of them with Lahm are the three most beloved players among the fans that have left Bayern in recent times. Maybe Schweinsteiger could make part of that group too. But then you have someone like Jerome Boateng, who was a regular and generally a well liked character among fans, as well as being a wc winner, but when he left it didn't really make all that much noise. In his case his performances were already declining a bit, but still. So it's not a guarantee that if he'd being a Germany wc winner he'd be more loved by fans. The attitude towards the club plays a part as well.

@@Timbone07 first of all, Wolfsburg won the league in 08-09 season, and Robben arrived in 2009. Only Dortmund won the league since then. Secondly, Joshua Kimmich arrived at Munich in 2015, Leon Goretzka in 2018 and Serge Gnabry in 2017. Throughout all of their time at the club, Bayern had no real competition in Bundesliga. That doesn't change the fact that they're all very highly regarded and loved by the fans, not just for the success of the club in general, but for their work-rate and their passion for the club, similar to Thomas Muller and Manuel Neuer. Kimmich is even considered the natural successor to Lahm, one of the most beloved and respected figures from the club's and Germany national team's modern history. And thirdly, even if they can "easily" win the league, they don't just relax during the entire season and lower their level (like what has happened to PSG). They keep pushing themselves, they keep a high intensity, they work out hard to improve in all aspects of their game. They want to keep competing with Europe's other elite clubs in the Champions. They are not satisfied with just the minimum to collect their medal at the end of the season. They always want more. And that's where Lewandoski doesn't seem to click with the team anymore.

This is partially true. You said like he was invisable at Bayern. The truth is, in past 5 years no Bayern fan could even imagine the team without him, starting eleven was Lewandowski and anyone else. I remember when he was out due to injury to Real Madrid CL game in quater final(or was that semi final?), everyone felt doomed that time, we all knew Bayern won't win without him and that's exactly what happened. The same happened 2 years ago when he was out with PSG. When he was on the pitch, everything was possible. You said he didn't play well with Real in CL, so Real didn't want him. That's a lie - I remeber that time, he played injured in that game and a transfer wasn't even considered at that time. He played only because team needed him, even when he could give 50%.

Thing is lewy was never a man to show up on big games, 2015 had 2 clear chances that should’ve been scored and would’ve very well changed the match! 2018 against real was a horrendous match for him, couldn’t even control a ball I remember! In the cl winning year he wasn’t decisive, scored against chelsea but gnabry had already closed the tie in the first game, scored against a 5-2 losing barca, scored a goal against lyon at the 89 min, appearance on the final was good but he never sparked joy in our hearts! Like mabye ronaldo did, that’s why imo he’s not a bayern legend, never liked him, wasn’t a man to connect with the fans, and the fact that he disappeared in big matches added to the fans really not seeing him as mabye a club legend! Still a world class striker and a machine, but in a bundesliga where bayern have been dominating for 10 years it doesn’t mean much

Its kinda poetic how, the last year he played at bayern, he was not selfish and was a team player, a role model to the young. Then he finally won the ucl with dignity and left.

Well, I'm not sure if I will be not PC but Lewy being Polish had always played into the reception in Germany, not just in Bayern. In Dortmund they told him that he can't be a highest paid player because he was a Pole. That sort of attitude carried into Munich, not because he wasn't paid well but never celebrated like Roben but he came from a country Germans don't have much respect for. Had he been a Britt or French he probably would have wont ballon d'or winner by now. Heck, I go step further and say that in 2020 had he been British or Dutch they would have gave him the trophy that year, instead they scrapped it because of covid. :-) Now, in Barcelona he is a happy camper for the first time in 12 years. People love him there and he's got his fire reignited doing what he does by scorring goals.

I love that he’s with us at Barca 🔥 we the fans love him because he scores goals. Once a culer always a culer.

How Lewandowski is remembered is going to be interesting. In the wider footballing world he will be remembered as one of if not the greatest striker of all time. His goal scoring feats in the league and champions league are second to none and eclipse the normal allegations of the BuLi being a weaker league. 41 goals is incredible no matter what. The man should be a back to back Balon D’or winner. But is he that to Bayern fans? Is he a club legend? Is he remembered as one of the greatest strikers in their history? It’s a very interesting difference

It doesn’t eclipse the allegations Buli being weaker. It is there because no other team in that league can come close to Bayern, and Lewy’s big numbers are part of that reason. No club there can challenge Bayern and Lewandowski. Plus the fact that other than Bayern no other Bundesliga teams are consistent in reaching the higher rounds of UCL. Even in Europa League, its the Spanish clubs that dominate it for some time.

He wasn't a fan favourite in Dortmund, but we gave him a proper send off that still brings chills to my spine when I look back at that moment. And I think he was Klopp's biggest success story at the time, when he was starting to build his reputation as a king maker in underdog teams.

for BL he was the best goal scorer for sure, better than Haland, for CL "the best all time goal getter"? i dunno, but '21 he was the best. His sense of space and positioning is the best i've seen. And i watch football very closely since '94. BundesL strangely was always a one team league, the other teams being vassals for bayern. That is why BL never outshined a PremierL., where 5-6 could win a title at least for a long time, (not now really in the oil money era) or LaLiga, where 3 teams are at least close enough. PLus bad luck stopped him winning more CL, which was the only thing that mattered for him. He should be at least a 4 time CL winner with that bayern squad. But he is too nice of a guy to yell at team , when they should play him all the time. Bayern management went behind his back for Haland, Salihamidzik, and broke his trust and heart. Than the press said he had no feelings. The team started having ego problems where players weren't serving him with balls so much anymore. The wings sane, ganbry, coman were very good, but not team players in important moments.

Robert Lewandowski: One of the greatest strikers to ever do it, has left his mark. Seen him in red since he left Dortmund, and I honestly can barely remember a time he hasn't performed. A true professional, it could be sad to never see him get the Ballon D'Or he deserved for those two stunning years he produced, and hopefully the club to which he devoted nearly a decade will recognise his brilliance. Good luck to him in Barca, and good luck to Mané in filling his shoes.

Ironically, because his move from Dortmund to Bayern demoted Bayern's nearest rival from a UCL finalist level to a UCL knockout round level, it really took away "meaningful" domestic campaigns and left only UCL for Lewy. But, he himself created that competitive vacuum.

It's his personality. He puts his personal career on the first place and he is not as emotional with the fans as other players.

I think a few years further everyone will remember him as the great striker he was at Bayern and with his numbers there is no way around calling him a Bayern Icon. I already get nostalgic seeing him in the Bayern kit.

I can see the argument but think that Lewandowski will be judged differently in the future. Like you stated one of the reason for the lack of love is that Bayern and Lewandowski were just too good in the last 8 years. With former legends there have been times of struggle. Robben was loved because his story was truly unique. He was the glass man, always injured and despite promise he was disposed by Real Madrid for more expensive/shiny stars. Then after a great start and a title/champions league fairy tale which ended in the final Klopp and Dortmund dominated the league in the 2 following seasons. Robben was labeled an egoist by German media, missed an important penalty in the Champions League final, for some time lost his starting place and many people wanted him out of the squad. Then (many people don't remember anymore) in the 12/13 season Bayern was dominating with a new system and Robben started this season on the bench/injured. But after Kroos injured himself, Robben came back and had so many great games. He dominated against Barcelona, scored their winning goal in the final and has been a hero since. People like this story of struggle. There never has been such a story about Lewandowski. He was a beast at Dortmund and after the first season where he was just very good, be became an absolute machine. Müller and Beckenbauer had great rivalries back in the 70ies. There was Gladbach and other elite strikers like Heynckes, Klaus Fischer and so on. But for Lewandowski the only other attacker who could compete with him (for a short period of time) was Aubameyang. It's like watching an action movie where the protagonist is great in every aspect from the start. He has no problem dealing with the bad guys and so no real excitement comes out of it. For his legacy: He is the best striker, together with Gerd Müller Bayern has ever had and with a few years more he could have taken every individual award away from Gerd. His footsteps have to be filled out by 2-3 different players (Gnabry, Mane, Sane). And don't be fooled to just say "now Bayern will be way more flexibel" after one game played in the new season. The first real test will come when there is struggle and the dominant force in the box which is Lewandowski is missing. The wind can shift pretty fast and then everyone will come crying for a target man again

it is as you say, and as i expected, this african bayern squad by this supposed "creative" Flikk coach, had a disastrous start in BL as the recent results shows. I liked Jupp Heinkes infinitely more, strong identity of game play. The identity of the team is gone. They think just cause some are individually good, that wins games, no, you have to focus in one point, that was Lewi the tip of the spear for Bayern. I cannot support Bayern anymore since aside, Muller Kimmich and Neuer, there is no real german in there anymore. This politcs of inclusion i don't want any part of thank you, this is or was sport, today it is anything but.

also getting Gerd's record, would mean staying at least 1-2 more seasons, to be sure. That is a lot of time to give from his time left in his career, esp. when he always wanted to play in LaLiga. But spanish big guns weren't fishing for him, when it was ideal for him. He may have overstayed his time in germany anyway, contracts were signed he couldn't leave, now since he now realistically doesn't have 8 years to break any records at Barca. It is very nice if he has 4 years. But Leo was his whole life at Barca so it is very hard. Maybe a single season goals record, a miracle, but that is also hard since he has some immature egotistical idiots at barca like rafinha, dembele, kunde also. Fishing for a CL title could be realistic and a dream come true. I wish it for him though. Nowadays who plays past 35 as a striker at the highest level? benzema while great, looks at the end of his stay, Ronaldo left at 33, (which was the mistake of his career.) Lewa already is 34. Even if he keeps scoring the press other than barca's papers , will bring up the age until his auto frustrates himself. Esp. if they beat Real and frustrate them.

so as a conclusion i think i would have stayed at Bayern break Gerds legendary record, seal my legacy. And win as many CL as i could. At least in Germany i would have been the best ever. But germans would probably still love beckenbauer forever more than a polish guy. unless i married a german girl and moved to germany. In reality that is incredibly difficult esp. if i got bored of bayern but he chose pleasure of playing at barca and i love that about Lewa, he has more heart than anybody even if he comes across as a robot.

Arguably the top striker of his generation, with Luis Suarez & Zlatan Ibrahimovic following closely behind him. 34-years-old with18 goals in 19 games for Barcelona so far this season... If he continues at anywhere near this rate for another 2 seasons, then he will undoubtably the greatest striker of his generation, if not the 21st century thus far...

first of all, i don't see zlatan and luis play in the same generation. secondly, lewandowski only scored like 10ish more goals than zlatan. the reason zlatan didn't score "that much" was because he wasn't staying in a team that dominated the league for so long. " he spent his early career in serie a, when serie a was still highly competitive with legends like R9, ronaldino, maldini, gattuso, del pero, totti playing in the league. not like a farmer league like bundesliga with bayern munich winning the league 8 years in a row. he then went to PSG, which was not a dominant before his arrival. he did well in man united in his 35, not to mention he carried ac millan when he got back in 38 and won the league at his 40. in term of technical skill, zlatan is a much more complete striker when compared to lewandowski, his playaking was okay, his dribbling was real good considering his size. honestly cannot think of many iconic goals from lewandowski but a lot from zlatan. zlatan is actually underrated af. i would say he is definitely a better striker than lewandowski. by the way luis suarez is way better than lewandowski as well, the reasons are similar as what i explained above on zlatan.

And now all my friends who are fans of Bayern really cannot stand him after his recent interviews. While I don’t speak for all Bayern fans, but for those in Munich, the majority are glad to move on from the Lewandowski chapter Excuse any of my poor english.

It´s not that Bayern never loved Lewandowski. Lewandowski did incredible things for them and all Bayern friends in my social circle loved the guy to bits. But I understand where the Idea that they didnt comes from. A player of his magnitude would have been immortalized at most other clubs but not at Bayern, which is also a function of timing and attitude. Lewandowski is a true professional, he is loved for his on field perfomance but doesn´t emotionally engage the average fan outside the pitch. Combine that with the fact that he shared an Era with the hyper charismatic Thomas Müller, a german national team hero and bayern youth product, and you can see where most of the love went. Considering his move to Barcelona, this is just how Bayern operates. You could call it ruthless, but Bayern have a strong conviction that nobody is bigger than the club. If you threaten to leave and bring the club into disarray or want unreasonable wages you get the boot, no matter your achievements. Just ask David Alaba.

Well to be fair, Alaba just asked Bayern to close the gap between him and Lewandowski. Bayern were, in my opinion, unreasonable to deny him that. And have therefore lost a lot of competitive edge in the Champions League. Which Alaba's new team won btw. So much for "unreasonable".

2 main reasons: 1. He is Polish. Translate what German fans write in internet. "This Polish guy will never be on the level of Muller, Neuer or Kahn." When he had 39 goals in season and 3 matches, many Bayern fans attacked him and said: he shouldn't brake record, because Muller is the real legend. (He did it anyway) 2. Hard work and shy. He don't have time and personality to be a star.

Bayern treats his legends businesslike once they reach a certain age, by offering yearly contracts. A loving relationship needs to come from both parties to work. When Lewy said "something has broken" he didn't refer to Haaland but to the fact that Bayern has tried to blackmail him saying that he'll either sign a contract or he'll be sitting in the stands. Lewy came to Bayern as a free transfer and gave the club a lot of return financially and increased club's recognition, especially in Poland. The fact he was treated stone cold after giving so much to the club and Bayern not willing to accept anything less than 45 million by itself shows the cold businesslike philosophy of Bayern and Germans. They wanted to squeeze every penny out of him even if it meant ruining the relationship between them. In a true loving relationship both parties are more than willing to make sacrifices for eachother especially considering long standing relationship. If I were a top player I would think twice before signing with Bayern seeing how self oriented they are.

You have an obvious bias against Bayern. Yearly contracts for 30+ players are quite common in European football. Wanting a 3 year contract with salary increase at 34 years is not quite the "loving relationship" sign from Lewandowski too, considering how Bayern try to maintain their salary structure and not inflate the market like many other big clubs. 45 million is fair for a player of Lewa's quality and his importance at the club. Maybe things could change if Bayern could transfer another striker, but since they couldn't ofc they will set a price tag that suits their needs. As for your last point, many big players are really attracted by Bayern (as shown by Mane, de Ligt etc) so I doubt they really care about your "ifs" or Lewandowski's similar statement.

@@florentbajrami4969 You just confirmed my point. Bayern does what Bayern wants regardless of player's history with the club. Is 45 million fair to ask for Lewy? Sure, but considering he came as a free transfer and produced at a level he did year after year is distasteful. This is a cold, businesslike treatment at a cost of relationships. Money above all else. Money above letting a player go a little cheaper without hiking up the drama and stress levels. Hey, you got the money but you lost respect in some peoples eyes just because of your unwillingness to compromise. I don't want to generalize but that is a typical German trait. A polish mentality incorporates the willingness to sacrifice for the benefit of both parties involved. That is what Lewy has been saying publicly. He expected to sit down, talk and come to a solution that would benefit all. Just like in marriage or any type of relationship/friendship...nobody likes the person who always expects to have it their way. Heck Lewy even went back and visited the team and management on his last trip to Munich without holding grudges and without pride. Meanwhile Bayern hasn't even given him a proper farewell. It's easy to see which side the pride resides.

Agree with you - but for me especially in a league like the Bundesliga where passion is so rampant in many clubs, this just feels a bit too cold.

Gotze, Gundogan, & Sahin were a class midfield with Reus & Lewandowski.. I’m a Madrid fan but I remember we got wrecked. & Mkhitaryan in 15/16 was class. I do remember he missed a tap in during he champions league which was terrible.

At the end of the day it's 1) A job, and you won't deny a better perspective and paycheck either 2) These people (professional athletes) are extremely success driven. Can't have that at Dortmund, simple as that. As much as it pains me and as much as I dislike Bayern (im German). 3) Not everyone wants to stay at a job for your entire life. Some people need that stability, others need to get out of their comfort zone to be happy. 4) I repeat: You wouldn't reject a better paycheck and a significantly better perspective on the future either.

Although Lewandowski is brilliant, no doubt one of the top 5 strikers in the world and admired by Bayern fans he is not so iconic or beloved because he plays with two of the club's greatest living legends: Thomas Muller and Neuer. Thomas Muller for me is Bayern's face, he is for Bayern what Messi was for Barcelona, I can't imagine him outside Bayern. And Neuer is perhaps the most important player of the team, the defenses he made have secured the 19/20 Champions much more than the goals.

Only time will tell… Robery were the heroes I watched growing up and they will be the greatest Bayern players in my mind for a long time to come. Maybe kids watching Robert growing up will feel the same way

At Barça he is touching the Culers Soul already, and if he has 2 successful seasons he can become a legend here, a legend who came with low wages and helped us in our worst financial situation

I will always be thankful for the performances he gave die roten. That said, with his age and a creative coach like Nagelsman, Bayern will probably score more goals than they did with him last year. I really wish him the best personally but not professionally because of my disdain for Barca, but he will be a club legend and it was a great ride. Lewandowski helped prove that the Ballon d'or is a pointless award.

Nagelsman would have been perfectly content continuing to feed Robert. Would have been malpractice not to inquire about the next big thing tbh. While you can debate who is better now, you can't debate the future with a mid 30s player against a total stud not even close to his prime yet.

@@Roger_Diz You are high mate. He was fine with Haaland coming in but he wanted to be a part of the future of the club too. But the board completely cut him off. Now Bayern has no Lewa or Haaland and are struggling in the league against an in form Dortmund.

As a Barca fan, he has been incredibly professional in the interviews and he seems very happy there. He even said he feels like a kid in a candy shop. So I don't think he was a mercenary, but was mistook for one. a mercenary wouldn't say "something broke in me" when his team decided to not show up to help him.

play as a striker with robben, when he NEVER give a ball to his striker in the middle! only shooting. and so done more player few years by bayern...not everytime like robben but most! Much other player were psychically broken!

I kinda feel that Lewandowski will connect more with Barcelona fans, because of his new energy and motivation after 12 years in the Bundesliga. I feel like he will not only be a lethal goalscorer but also an assist provider more than ever, atleast that is my impression from his official debut against Pumas. He was involved in 4 out of 6 goals.

Lewandowski always was very clear with the fact, that he isnt playing for Bayern because he liked the club, but because they were the best. He never loved Bayern, and so the fans never really loved him either. The thing is, it doesn't have to be like this... Take ribery, robben, thomas müller, basically everyone else. They are loved by the fans and the bosses, and they love the club. Lewandowski has been, during his time at Bayern (and Dortmund, for that instance) always been a mercenary, only playing for the most bidding.

What a dumb statement! If you were right, how come many former players are somewhat involved in the club and adored by the fans. Lewy's predecessor Mario Mandzukic is still revered by every Bayern supporter I know, same with Giovane Elber or Paulo Sergio. It's not even limited to strikers, Martin Demichelis or former role players like Hansjörg Butt are very well liked and the former is currently coaching Bayern's second team.

You forgot to mention German mentality that also played some role in his attitude towards the club. The relation always needs two parts.

The animations and production of this video is nicer than usual, keep this style please.

Even if he didn’t make a great emotional attachment with the club or the players, our interests (The club’s and Lewy’s) were directly aligned, in that he wanted goals, wins, and titles, as did Bayern. At the end of the day, he’ll be a club legend purely for the contribution of goals and titles and that’s fine. Not every footballer needs to have the same emotional connection to a club like Robben or Ribery.

I almost cried watching robben and ribery’s last match with Bayern. The emotion was palpable especially given the circumstances of the match. Seeing both of them score is one of my favorite football memories ever. Lewandowski could never have a moment like that at Bayern

It helps the teams he plays for because he scores almost on command. But it does nothing to grow the club’s culture beyond what it was before he arrived there

It’s always vibes in Bayern they always have a great team so the fans are never used to seeing any other side of him, seemingly bored of outstanding performances all the time. But then you have Harry Kane who’s never always had a great team but has a great connection with his fans.

Lewandowski does carry himself in a machine-like fashion. It's what made him become so good. Bayern also acts very machine-like when it comes to dealing with players. It's always business, rather than emotion. In this case Bayern had Lewy for another year on contract and were looking at Haaland and not willing to work on extending Lewy's contract. Lewy in the past also indicated he wanted to leave for Real Madrid, so in the end I understand both sides of the story, as a Bayern and Lewy fan. We had Lewy for 8 amazing years. Only the awkward exit which I think both parties contributed to its awkwardness has made it seem like Lewy wasn't fully loved.

I dont think anyone in Dortmund feels any ill will towards Lewa. He wanted to take the next step in his career, same as Harland did this summer, or Sancho did the year before. We know we are just a develomental club for the Top10 clubs in Europe. BUT in comparison to players like Mkhitaryan or Dembele, he didnt force a trade. Those guys burned the bridges in Dortmund. Lewa just said he wants to leave, Dortmund said he has to stay, so he did and played great for us the last season without complaining. So no hard feelings whatsoever... He was just in line with so many other guys that got their international breakout here and then left. Kagawa, Pulisic, Sancho, Gündogan, Aubameyang, Götze, Hummels, Dembele, Mkhitaryan, Haarland ... all came to Dortmund relatively unknown and left after 4 years or less as Star players.... It is what it is... Bellingham and Adeyemi will be next, and Moukoko will also not stay long term, if he gets his breakout season...

I mean, Halaand did leave the club, but he didn't leave for a domestic rival and with that, made his club less competitive and the main rival for the title stronger. For that kind of view, you need to accept the lack of ambition which in the place where I'm from, simply isn't something a fanbase would accept. But kudos to those who are that mature.

This year for example Schlotterbeck from Freiburg, Modeste/Özchan from Köln. Götze is a special case though... the was from our own youth system and said openly he loves Dortmund and hopes he can stay his entire career here... and then demanded a trade just months later... Hummels was from the Bayern youth system. I think his father was even a trainer for Bayern... he came here to play and develop, did that, won 2 national championships for us along the way and then went back to his original club in Bayern... No ill will or fake "love confession " there. Well both came back to Dortmund. But Götze after he couldnt get it done, Hummels after he was a starter for several years... One is still beloved, the other one played here for a couple of seasons, but it was never the same again...

I think you interpret way too much into this. The only reason he left in my opinion was that he did not win the Ballon d'Or. He realised that with Bayern's dominance in the Bundesliga his efforts would not be taken into account the same way a similiar performance in a different league would be. He wants to win the Ballon d'Or and he can't do that with Bayern as the Bundesliga is seen as inferior by journalists around the globe.

Lewandowski is a club legend. He was a vital part of Bayern's most succesful season in 2020. However, he will never be on the same level like Ribery, Robben, Sxhweinsteiger, Müller, Neuer etc., because Bayern was like a stepstone in his business plan.

How was it a stepping stone? By the time he retires the majority of his prime years will have been given to Bayern. He used Dortmund as a stepping stone to get to an elite club like Bayern, but you can't call it a stepping stone when a player leaves at age 34 to try a new challenge after having won everything with a club.

I love lewandowski just in general I'm an englishman and wasn't really into football when rob was at his peak but I still watch his best moments now cause he's just a masterclass he may be the best he may not but no one can deny that robert lewandowski is one of the best strikers in football world history

It's interesting, because if you see media and interviews of recent.. It really does seem like he's found a home even if it's just Barca. Maybe it was a good choice to go to Barca (saying this w/o bias) .. with how he said "something died within him" in Bayern.. time will tell. But so far, I really do think he's at home in Barca currently (although, hopefully he adjusts his playmaking since the wc...)

If this was true he wont even be bothered to go back to Munich after the tour with Barca to make the final farewell. Despite the drama, I still love him as a Bayern fan and wish him the best.

After only a few bad games, everybody started complaining about Mario Goetze - the fans, media, legends - everyone. Underperforming. Not good enough etc. Fans lose all their patience, love and respect quickly and ask for another superstar to join the club. Leva was respected for his goals but not for who he was, and I think he knew that well.

Emotional connection is more the domain if fans than it is players. Fans spend their lifetimes following clubs, it's their lifelong passion/hobby. Players are going to work - it's their careers, so they're doing what's best for themselves personally as the number one priority, with the club coming second, which is how it should be. There are obvious exceptions to this - Gerrard, Scholes, Puyol, Maldini, etc., but it would be silly to expect otherwise from players that didn't grow up near that club.

I always felt like Lewy wasn’t really appreciated by Bayern. Not like cr7 with RM or Juve, or Messi with Barca. Sad

Because he was never the Messi or Ronaldo to Bayern. He was rather the Iniesta to Bayerns real Messis like Neuer or Müller. That's not "not appreciated". They absolutely loved him.
