Why Barcelona locals are protesting tourists
Tourists in Barcelona received an unwelcome surprise last weekend after thousands of protesters marched through the city's popular areas, spraying people with toy water guns while shouting, "Tourists go home." Richard Florida, a professor at the University of Toronto studying how urbanism and globalization affects communities, joins CBS News to examine why and how some countries are cracking down on tourism.

The reason for the rising high cost of living in Barcelona is because the locals that own apartments found out that they can make far more money renting their apartments on a short time rental (1 to 10 days) This took a lot of long term rental apartments off the market that the locals were renting. Due to "supply and demand", this also caused the long term rent prices to increase.

@@ThereIsOnlyWar40kIt’s been very much proven that AirBNB and other similar services gut neighborhoods and cause havoc in local markets. Barca needs to do the same.
@LP-ct9nk

Hotels are not apartments though and most people don’t even try to use them as such. Short term rentals/airbnbs only really became popular and widespread within the last 10 years, so no this aspect of tourism has not always existed. Short term rentals absolutely negatively affect the housing market for locals and long time residents and you can already see similar issues in the US especially in touristy states such as Florida. It’s not surprising at all something similar would be happening in Barcelona.
@superdog797

@Prodrentjet

@@superdog797the logic is not the same. As said above, a hotel room is not an apartment. A hotel room is not a viable option for a local to live in full time, an apartment is however. But locals can’t rent apartments if they’re all off the market due to Airbnb in the summer months. This means less apartments available for long term rent for locals, increasing the demand, which then increases the cost.

Housing prices increase regardless of tourism its self. In Touristy locations. Real Estate is in short supply and highly desirable. This makes them perfect investment vehicles for the super rich. What really increases cost of rent and homes is rich buying luxury condos and homes in the area. This increase the costs of housing everywhere else in that area. It’s called Gentrification. It’s funny how the “Expert” chose NYC as a good example when locals have been dealing with Gentrification for years. You can’t afford anything larger than a small walk in closet unless you make high 6 figure income. NYC good at managing Tourists? Only multi-millionaires can live in Manhattan. True. But these tourists were just eating when they were assaulted. I’m unsure if they were American if so I’m proud of them for showing restraint.
This situation can be solved by government officials speaking to businesses about how to better support their employees (as there is a cost of living crisis), promoting vocational school attendance (as there is a skill mix match or lack of skills), getting a complete picture on the migrant situation, working with countries of origin to dampen migration, partnering with other locations that wouldn't mind accepting migrants (that have skills, and no background), or just straight up deporting migrants who cannot improve skills to be able to afford the cost of living in the area. Then the government needs to get a complete picture on the illegal occupation of homes. Who illegally occupies. Why? Can there be a distinct court system to handle illegal occupations? Can landlords and okupas agree on a rental agreement that is given government protection (they can stay in the home. They pay x. If they don't pay x in y days, you can get a quick eviction). And then finally government should look into increasing the base salary needed for all visas (student, digital nomad, non-lucrative, social arraigo-work). Because clearly, this isn't a tourism issue. This is a cost of living, lack of well paying jobs due to lack of skills, unchecked migration, and unchecked illegal occupation of homes issue. And those need to be addressed as of yesterday.
I fully support Barcelona! I don't visit it precisely because of the diabolical overcrowdedness, which also puts off better tourism than the kind that these cities have been invaded by (the bar crawlers who behave like animals). I stopped by almost two decades ago for an afternoon only, on my way to France by car, and couldn't get out of there fast enough, it was already that bad. So I can't even imagine what it must feel like for the residents now.
Hypocrites.

The quality of life? A vast concept. Is it the tourists' fault if one can't keep up with the rising prices? As a tourist, I would prefer to pay as locals. Is it my fault when the business raised the prices? And attacking tourists is no excuse at all.

Be careful what you wish for. Then I dont want to see any residents from Barcelona tpuring other countries. That would be hypocritical
You convinced me. We will never go to barfcelona. Madrid on the other hand is a great modern friendly city.

I agree. Just came back from Spain a few weeks ago. I enjoyed Madrid more compared to Barcelona. Barcelona is a beautiful city regardless. But I’ll be honest, seeing too many tourists there was a bit overwhelming for me.

It’s fine, it’s their country. But it won’t solve their housing problems.
Air BnB needs more regulation but water squirting is not a peaceful protest

In the US, they use REAL guns....
The world is overpopulated, and there really are not that many great places to visit to be honest.
Can they even support themselves without tourism? 😂
They’ll protest their fellow Spaniards, too. They’re Catalan: a breed apart.
Every Rose Has Its Thorn
Barcelona has a population of 1.7 million people and get over 33 million visitors a year, to be honest that’s trash tourists. Barcelona should be charging a lot more and reduce those numbers by more than half, that would make it easier to manage and actually be more profitable
In two years they will be begging for tourists to come back.
New York has done a great job? Has he been to NYC lately? It's an absolute hellscape.

No it’s not. I was just there. Great bars and restaurants. If you can’t handle crowds, go to White Plains New York which still has a city vibe but much less people and it’s just outside of New York, Learn the city and the metropolitan area first before you criticize

They are not protesting against immigration. They are protesting against tourism.
What’s the point of tourist money if it only goes to the rich and never helps everyone else afford to live in thier home that becomes so popular that it’s pushing the locals out
Valencia is better , but don’t tell.
The protestors will need a break from their efforts, upon which they'll take a vacation somewhere and become tourists.
Great! Can we do the same with ilegal/unregulated immigration?
But who are the tourist? Germans? asian? indians?

Probably mostly from Europe and some from the Americas
Those that protest are they from barcelona? I saw some other flags in one of the videos. That's the problem with protest, they can claim to be anyone...students, residents, etc. They should request something wit the local officials.
And with that - Those are mostly NATO countries Barcelona is saying that too… I don’t think you want to bite the hand that protects you, do you? Just saying.
They should just ban Air BnB. Telling them to leave is not the answer!
Barcelona wouldn’t know what to do without tourism.
I promise to stay away from Barcelona - even though that demand is ridiculous, since the issue is with allowing locals to short-term sublease their rented apartments -, only if there is a guarantee that no one from Barcelona is allowed to visit my region (Northern California). Since that guarantee is not given, and it won't be reciprocal, then I feel free to visit Barcelona if and when I please.
Blaming tourist for housing price inflation is like Blaming customer for a long line at a popular restaurant and protesting against such customer …😂 or blaming foreign cars for traffic congestion in a growing cities😂
I have no interest in going to Spain at all, but I do wanna take a transatlantic cruise as an American and that’s where they’re going to drop me off lol Eason should not be angry at tourist, citizens should be angry at their local politicians and city planners they’re the one that did. This are the ones that allow the Airbnb, they allows the cruise ship they control how many flights come in and out of their cities. Don’t be mad when people show up to your town be mad that all the people that are planning it and expecting them to show up.

Spain has some interesting cities, and away from the naff resorts some really cool landscape and surf (Pyrenees and North West coast). Barcelona is a great city, very relaxed feeling and amazing architecture. Well worth a visit. Some locals are nasty, woman in the train ticket office got angry at my poor Spanish and refused to understand (I just used a machine instead), but 99% are friendly and know where their Euros are coming into the place.
