Why Azura is Underrated and Misrepresented

Ойындар

Fire Emblem Fates is a pretty flawed game, but I think most of its cast consists of good characters who were let down by the game's writing rarely focusing on what makes them good. Several of them have had this showcased in other videos, but I think another clear example of this is present with the game's deuteragonist - Azura. She is largely ignored and written off as "boring", however at her core I believe she is a good and sympathetic character who deserved better. And as part of thinking over many Fire Emblem characters I think are underrated, I accidentally ended up having a lot to say about her.

Azura has always been so special for me. Lost in thoughts all alone not only got me introduced to the fire emblem series but still to this day is my favorite song. Fire emblem fates and Azura got me through really hard times when I first found them out in 2019. Fast forward 3 years and I’m in the middle of high school and have been learning dance and singing. I started taking better care of myself and she shaped my part of my personality. A goal I have been working to ever since 2019 is to one day cosplay her and perform as her be KZread or in public, I want to one day as cringe as it may sound “ become the real life Azura “ through cosplay, singing, and dancing, I guess what I’m trying to say is how much she means to me and I’m happy that other people see her worth! :)

I've always loved Azura (and Corrin too honestly), Azura in particular I felt she was underappreciated and overlooked, same as many other Fates characters. Most people just are quick to write off anything to do with Fates and avoid looking deep into it. She's a really fascinating and complex character though. The reason I believe she is only portrayed as shy occasionally while also being able to talk to people she's never met before without trouble is due to her stoicism. She has trouble with more sensitive/emotional interactions, due to her constantly bottling up her own, but is able to hold her own on other occasions due to being able to suppress how she actually feels.

I said it before, and i'll say it again. There was no need for Corrin to exist, Azura should have been the main lord of Fates. Also, the fact that Corrin is not even blood related to the Hoshidan family makes Birthright have no point at all, but if Mikoto was still alive And was Azura's mom instead, then it would make some sense.

Wait fuck, that solves….every single issue, practically. With Conquest I think. Azura is stolen from Hoshido because Anankos knows that her pendant, along with the song, can defeat him. The sane Anankos could bring in the 3 Awakening kids to protect her from Garon, with 3 shards of the pendant as backup in case Azura loses hers (pendant from his timeline). The reason Garon doesn’t take away the pendant is like in Good Guy Garon, where he still fights back against Anny, up until Azura tries to sing for her father to celebrate her victory over Cheve, causing fits and Anankos completely erasing Garon, or locking him away for good. He takes her pendant, destroys it, and she accidentally gets sent to Valla when she sings her song next (pendant can’t protect her from the curse). Gunter finds her, having survived due to his military training and skills likely taught to him; maybe the maid/butler joins in, because they’re never too far away, and repeated the song words in shock. Arete shows up, Azura’s aunt, and she temporarily breaks free to tell Azura how to leave. She then says the hoshidan throne could potentially save Garon, blah blah blah, we get to Ryoma dying and the royals don’t believe Azura. Elise tries her best to get Xander, Camilla and Leo to listen, but it’s only when the Awakening Kids step up and back Azura that it finally clicks that everything is wrong. Odin, Selena and Laslow bring out the fragments of the pendant, and Azura sings to fix it (powers, idk), and they confront Gooran together.

Actually i like Corrin's existence I just wish he was this game's Robin and from Ch 4 ending onwards, Azura was this game's Chrom and Xander/Ryoma the Lucina character as the third protagonist And Corrin IS GREAT, in Warriors and Heroes, the problem with Corrin is how in Fates they always force the message that Corrin is special and that he's a good soul that can see how pointless all the bloodshed of war is, but It doesn't stop with this, Corrin also is basically a saint and son of a Fallen god If Corrin was just Sumeragi's son with Mikoto(which would be Anankos's daughter) that besides being just the Marth Archetype, Corrin could also be a little agressive sometimes (he kind of is in BR) and less self righteous, with him starting as a dumb naive underdog that grows to be a leader in par with Xander and Ryoma Azura would be the one to know about Valla and help Corrin to mature, in Rev she would be the greater focus (while in Rev and BR it would be more focused in Corrin) This is how Fates should be written in my opinion

That way Corrin still has blood connections to Hoshido, be it just the latter 2 siblings, but also make Takumi’s hatred of Corrin even more founded as he’d actually be one of the few people actually related to Corrin.

I disagree, I like Azura but I think she'd be absolute garbage as a lead for Fates. In story she simply has no real strength, charisma, or solid reasons to be important. Norh don't like her because of her mother, Hoshido don't trust her at all outside of Ryoma and Mikoto. You'd need to completely remake the story, and I don't mean the writing or the plot, but literally a fundamental shift in the entire backstory, to even begin to make her fit. Also Mikoto still chose Hoshido which is just as strong a reason as being related in my eyes. But I think the whole idea of "I'm related so I care" is a moronic story to begin with, so I think Birthright already has a stupid reason anyways.

I am sorry but no. Corrin is the avatar, a bridge between the player who most likey hasn't gone through war or family tensions this high, but also a powerful tool that others will want for thier own victory; yet also something they want destroyed so their don't lose. Corrin is innocent, hopeful, naive, and kind. They were placed in a war like the saying "A gardener in a battle field". I just wish the team behind the game would have given Corrin...more. Help this sprout grow into a rose with its own beauty and thorns. Because fighting for your loved ones is beautiful but war is brutal. I love Azura, but she has her own story. She already knew of the harshness of war, lived through it with her many many siblings; adopted or not. If she didn't believe she deserved love even with love being given to her, then she needed a catalyst to help push her in the right direction. And Corrin, the blank slate that they started as, is that catalyst. I just wish alot of these characters could have been written better to show off why and how they are important to eachother.

This, everything in this video is why all us Azura fans love her and why more people need to read the stories/supports a bit more carefully. For me, Azura was the character that gave me a wake-up call to start changing my life for the better. While I never experienced what she went through one-to-one (and I'm thankful for that), I have experienced the feeling of being an outcast, some bullying, and some self-loathing mixed in during high school. But when I played all 3 routes of Fates, I noticed how Azura was acting and took note of her. Eventually, I pieced together her backstory. But it's after seeing all of that I noticed that after all was said and done in Revelations, I started to think that she would be happier after the story since Azura now has her adopted siblings and the endings of her supports with them felt like they were beginning to become a family again (not sure why they left out Camilla, but what ever). That then made me want to work towards a similar happiness she had and leave all my negative thoughts and self-loathing behind. (Still working on it, but it's been going pretty well). It's very, very unfortunate that a lot of people dislike Azura all because Fates' writing wasn't thought out and adding more dislike because of FEH, but I do hope that this video can at least make some of those people rethink how they judge a character, even when the writing heavily waters down their backstory.

Unpopular opinion, but Fates still has a place in my heart, with Birthright being only the second Fire Emblem game I ever played in junior high. I actually thought Azura was a strong character internally and a good mentor figure for Corrin, who was just starting to see the world outside of their tower. I really wish she didn't die because she deserved so much better after everything that happened. I actually married her when playing replaying Conquest and Birthright (before I learned that she was technically Corrin's cousin) because I just really liked her as a character. I only recently bought and played Revelations, and I still prefer that game's ending, just because everyone, especially Azura, gets to live, if nothing else. I actually enjoy playing as her in Warriors.

I honestly have a similar mindset about what was mentioned about Azura in this video with her being misunderstood by the fanbase with 2 second generation characters in this game, specifically Sophie and Asugi. Firstly with Sophie, I've heard it said that her entire personality is "girl with horse", and that her horse, Avel, has more personality than her, but if you read her supports, it becomes clear that she is quite insecure, mainly stemming from her issues of having to deal with her stubborn ass of a horse all the time. She's portrayed as being hard working because she wants to be a great knight (no, not the class, which she can promote into) like her father, Silas, but being so clumsy and Avel constantly causing her no end of grief with how badly he behaves cause her to doubt her own abilities, and as touched on in her supports with Soliel, she wants to be acknowledged for the hard work she puts into being a knight. This leads pretty well into another aspect of her lack of self esteem, as she doesn't think of herself as particularly pretty or cute, and she brings up wanting to be complimented on her ability on the battlefield when Soliel compares her to a flower. Despite this, Sophie is still shown to be determined to become the knight she dreams of one day becoming, and she usually doesn't let these negative feelings get her down for long because of this. As for Asugi, he's most commonly thought of as being a sillier and more shallow very of Gaius, the character from Awakening that he's based off of, with this perception of him stemming mainly from his constant talking about sweets in the my castle between missions and many of the things he says in battle. However, this only serves to belie his true personality, and I'm pretty convinced that the people who view him in such a shallow mindset haven't taken the time to look into his support conversations, as they usually portray him far more seriously, more akin to the way he acted in his recruitment paralouge. The true version of Asugi (which I'm convinced he hides under his mask of being cheerful and sweet obsessed) is actually more of a loner that doesn't do well when he has to cooperate with others, and will frequently push them away when they try to help him, either because he believes they will only get in his way if they do, or in the case of whomever is his mother, he wants to protect her and doesn't want to see others put themselves in danger on his behalf. This is further expanded upon in his supports with Hisame, who tries to get Asugi to cooperate more with his comrades, which eventually leads to Asugi explaining that the reason why he does this is because he was conditioned to in his training as a ninja, and deliberately avoids connecting with too many other people in the army, specifically because if he is to somehow die on one of his missions or on the battlefield, this will make it so that his passing will affect less peoples' emotions negatively and doesn't want to be a burden on them in that way. This doesn't mean that he doesn't want to make friends, such as in his supports with male Corrin or Ignatius, but he doesn't have an easy time doing so because he tends to naturally keep others at an arms length because of his upbringing, which is it's own can of worms with him feeling like Saizo cares more about him carrying on the family name than Asugi as a person

Azura is definitely a character people don't really think that deeply about, I think most people kinda just blame her for being in the center of some dumber plot points. I do think there is a good amount of people who like her but I feel like a good lot just kinda does cause "pretty anime waifu" without thinking anything deeper (and there's nothing wrong with that but it kinda sucks). Smoll Azura was definitely what got me into thinking about her more as a whole. Fates has a lot of characters who are either overlooked for surface impressions like Nyx, misrepresented by the story like Xander, hated for having nothing done interesting with them & staying static like Corrin, & lastly dismissed when having a lot of wasted potential like Garon (who most people don't even register that he's a fake amogus imposter of the real guy with the interesting backstory). I honestly like all the characters mentioned (some for what could of been *cough cough corrin & garon*) but man sometimes it's weird to say that with how all of them were presented.

Finally someone made a video about my waifu and one of my favorite characters of all time Azura is considered bad mostly because Fates story makes she look like only a plot device, but when you analyze only Azura she's a great character and oh god, they really made a character with Waterbending powers, Spear Fighting and that can sing and dance? She's basically the ideal woman for me lol Her cardboard personality is explained by her past where she literally had to see 3 major situations relating to her familly and death First with Anankos going berserk in Valla, later in the Concubine Wars and later with Fates events, and she always knew that her fate was probably to die in order to protect the world from Anankos (except for Rev) Azura also is basically the equivalent of CC from Code Geass for Corrin(unfortunately the story doesn't helps) she guides Corrin in his moments of confusion and regret, and shows that she can be an empathetic character who is not only serious all the time and be willing to pass through hell with Corrin I just don't like how Azura keeps Silent about revealling Valla directly in BR and CQ, this is by far what i hate most about the whole Fates story and it's what kind of ruins it for me, i think that they could've made something better in this part Hitori Omou/Lost in Thoughts is also one of my favorite songs and i love how it overplays in the game lol, also when you analyze the lyrics they aren't nonsense as people say, even the localization (which i like, even thought the JP one is waaaaay better and bothers me least, honestly the JP one is perfect for me except for reminding me of Fates's lost potential for story), i wish the song was less used for certain situations tho and its powers are simply whatever the plot wants and this really annoys me Azura deserved to be the protagonist or to be this game's Chrom/Lucina instead of being just a weird mix between Lucina, CC and Micaiah Either way, Azura is one of my favorite characters ever alongside Sephiroth, Vergil and Lelouch (which is funny because she is completely different from them lol) and i wish that one day Fates gets a remake that rewrittes some bits of the story or that people start to acknowledge how great Azura is and that she's not only a Plot Device that has many heroes alts and no personality

I remember seeing Azura as the character that got me fully interested in Fire Emblem Fates during the April 2015 Direct, it ended up becoming my first FE game. I found her design to be very beautiful and I just adored her character. I don't dislike Fates either since it is my first FE game, Yusuke Kozaki drew her very breathtakingly beautiful in the animated cutscenes. As for how she's treated, I honestly wish it was better. I don't hate Corrin, I actually like their character, but for a character like Azura to be basically the parallel to Corrin and with the devs considering her the main protag instead of Corrin, it sucks that she's treated so badly. While I didn't hate FEW either, I wish she was included from the very start, but her having a dedicated DLC pack with a story map changed things for me as well, even though the main story has a jarring omission of her character that still stings as you see cutscenes that feel like she should be there, but isn't. Lost in Thoughts All Alone is still my favorite FE vocal song and the related song, Water Maiden is my favorite vocal-less song.

I love this video so much! Azura is one of those fictional characters who just has so much going on with them. Other Fates characters do too, but none so strongly as her. I don't remember if it was before I got Birthright, but I developed a major crush on her in early high school, and some of the first fanfiction I wrote (for myself, I'm nt planning on releasing that) was the beginnings of an Awakening self-insert where I arbitrarily made Azura an additional sibling in the Ylissean royal family. My crush has abated but I still like her complexity. The real-world reception to her is also interesting from a gender studies note, because the negative reactions to her often seem rather tinged with sexism.

Azura is a very dear character and she should've had more presence and be considered a protagonist and I personally enjoy her parallels to Corrin. Azura has high status starting out but gets all that taken away only to be the unwanted and neglected child only wanted for personal gain while Corrin had a similar status and instead became a golden child everyone was SUPPOSED to love and be sheltered for their "safety" only to become a sacrificial lamb later on and a object of amusement in the case of conquest considering both Garon and Iago pushing Corrin to commit acts that would go against their moral compass which makes the story beats (in conquest at least) of corrin desperately doing what they can to regain their status in Garon's for protection since it's been made clear they're disposable and have no use anymore and azura supporting corrin since not only does she have no place to go but finds a form of solace in having someone in her position and not wanting them to suffer the same. The beats in birthright place her as a rather solemn lady who does what she has to as she feels she is alone and has no other purpose while putting on a half true happy face with the hoshidan family due to finding happiness with them but knowing that she's an outsider more than ever with corrin replacing her

@@orangeslash1667 that does explain why fates is the way it is but I enjoy the charm it has as a hot mess. You can see some of the effort and potential in supports and what can be implied in the characters' personalities and general disposition plus gameplay wise it's a pretty solid title even if the main story of it sucks. Azura as a character shines in her supports and any time she has a appearance in the story it usually stole the show and with her background it could've been more compelling with her as a main protag with corrin having a similar position as Robin (a avatar protag that shows up a lot but doesn't take as much presidence as the main protag and doesn't feel forced in their inclusion) since corrin suffers from avatar protag syndrome. It's great they have a manga for fates that cleans up the story

I always liked Azura. Actually, I would go so far as to stay that I only found out that Fire Emblem Fates existed in 2024 due to hearing a cover of "Lost in Thoughts All Alone" that was recommended to me by the KZread algorithm. I wound up listening over and over until I got curious about what game it was from. When I realized it was Fire Emblem, I was hesitant to play because I was worried about permanent character death, but then I heard Fates had a mode where I didn't have to worry about that. It was really weird actually playing the game and noticing the song that made me want to play in the first place was used a lot during the actual game... and that the character singing it was almost a protagonist herself, maybe even more central to the game than Corrin in some ways. The other reason is... kind of oddly personal and hard to explain, but I'll try anyway. I've always sort of felt that my personality was somehow divided into three characters that I used to dream about all the time. One is a British Soldier, another is a Vulcan, and the third is a girl that hates wearing shoes, enjoys writing, and wears a blue dress. What's really interesting is that the three characters seem to really line up well with Corrin's choices in Fates. The British Soldier thinks Corrin made the right choice in Conquest, when he sided with the people who raised him. The Vulcan thinks he made the right choice in Birthright when he took the most efficient route to destroying Garon after learning that Garon was his enemy and likely wanted him dead. And the girl thinks Corrin made the right choice in Revelations, refusing to take a side, trying to create peace and get people to see the bigger picture. Their personalities also seem to be oddly represented well in Fates. The British Soldier is a lot like Jakob, the Vulcan is a lot like Beruka, and the girl is a lot like both Azura and Corrin at the same time in a way, almost like what I think Azura would be like if she were less cynical and had somehow been the protagonist instead of Corrin, if that makes sense. The kind of arguments the Soldier and the Vulcan are always having seem similar to the way Ryoma and Xander would argue, with the girl always trying to get everyone to see both sides... that is to say, somehow or other a lot of the divisions in Fates seem to weirdly parallel internal divisions within my personality.

None of the fates characters are bad in concept, not even Corrin, the issue with them is that for the most part the story doesn’t care about the lot of them, or their development or motivations. The story just proposes that all of them on the same side have roughly the same vague motivation of winning the war and the characters mostly only ever get to talk about how they feel about Corrin, which is why the fates characters are usually the most interesting when you’re fighting against them rather than allied with them. Like Corrin isn’t a bad character in concept either, but saying that Corrin is underrated is ignoring that the concept and potential for Corrin as a character is overshadowed by the story not letting anyone really matter (not even Corrin) So like yes, Corrin and Azura could’ve been a lot better, but that doesn’t mean that either is secretly good. Fates could’ve had Azura and Corrin as characters of Contrast, Corrin is a character who’s naive, but who is willing to stand up for what they believe in, who ironically was raised in the kingdom that is low-key a hell hole. While Azura is world weary and lacks self-worth, sacrificing herself a lot of the time while being raised in the nation with plenty. There was potential for them to be contrasting characters. Yet the story doesn’t care about their worldviews or motivations, it only cares about them ending the war that nobody likes. Corrin could’ve helped Azura realize her self worth, while Azura could’ve helped Corrin gain more understanding of the world at large, and why it is that trust and peace are so hard, and important. And these ideas could’ve been explored in the course of the story, yet they’re not.

Great video, I mostly agree. I've always been a big lover of Fates, although I clearly like Corrin more than you but I'm used to that. It's a shame the writing holds the story and characters of Fates so badly. For Azura though, I think I only really hear about her in the fandom for how stupid the crystal ball thing is, but even then I almost never see that talked about with her just the writing. I think the main thing I want from her is more interactions with the siblings, like her not getting a Support with Camilla still kind of blows my mind, and I don't think her and any sibling but Ryoma or Takumi actually talk to her outside of the recruitments. Also off topic but I never got why people felt so strongly against the Valla Curse. Anankos is the SILENT Dragon with control over water, why is it hard to believe he just cursed all of Valla's water or something? Out of all of the plot issues in this game, or just the series in general, why is this one so bad?

The whole thing of not being able to speak the name of the kingdom or the true enemy is not quite as dumb as it sounds, in mythology, names are a powerful thing, so it could have benn a pretty interesting part of the story, but clearly the writers were drunk the days they were writing the story because it was executed very, very, very, poorly.

okay so; everything you said in this video was spot on, but at 11:45 you said that "it's a head canon, but not confirmed", which while technically true, it speaks to a larger issue that touch on at the end, being that i notice a lot of fe fans (a video game, and anime fans in general tbh) just ignore subtlety in its entirety. if something isnt confirmed through dialogue or inner monologue or whatever then it just isn't canon. this is a really bad mindset cause like, im fairly certain that azura's sense of self worth being so low it leads to her being so willing to sacrifice herself or abdicate is essentially a textual part of her character. i.e. not headcanon. the game just doesn't want to tell you this outright (which is frustrating cause fates is subtle enough for people to just misinterpret main characters sometimes but is willing to shank you with "MeAnInG" at less important matter but whatever). like people are so willing to chuck things that don't make sense aside a plot hole, like yes, it doesn't make sense that xander is so willing to throw all of his morals and principles aside when garon is in the same room as him - it is very weird, and inconsistent. but like, people are inconsistent. like don't get me wrong i don't think xander is a well written character but fuck man, xander does not need to say "I know my actions don't make sense, but my relationship with my dad is really intense and weird and I feel like I don't get a say in my actions whenever he's around." for people to know that is what he's feeling?? also side note - i dont like how popular the idea that azura should be the main lord is. i honestly think that would undermine a lot of the tragic aspects of her character tbh. like you said azura character is themed around the idea of being lost, i think it more specifically around the idea of helplessness. azura has no agency of her own, but corrin has all the agency in the world. the entire war starts and is shaped around their actions. the entire game uses the metaphor of a wave to describe corrin, they are a massive wave that will sweep both countries up in whatever choice they make. that is the impact corrin WILL have. azura does not have that agency, its a corner stone of her character and that contrast with corrin serves much to highlight it. ironically, she believes she cannot impact the world, and can only be impacted by it, but corrin is unable to do anything they want without azura's assistance. making azura one of the most powerful people in the war, but it all rings hollow to her person since she has no real choice in any matter. meaning she has to self-actualise through self-sacrifice in order to imbue her life with meaning, an arc that can only be done if she isn't the lead character herself, but is someone supporting the lead. (granted with all the ideas that fates has, this arc while technically fulfilled in the story is still devoid of emotive writing and nuance due to fates bad habits.) tl;dr - dont expect pieces of fictional to do ALL the work, please think for yourself, and azura is good, actually lmao edit: grammar lol

@@SantaFishes101 The Reason for Fate's sloppy story, is because the writers where trying to achieve too much with not enough time. Intelligent Systems had an idea for Fate to have three stories to appeal to everyone, but they realized that they didn't have enough writers. So they hired an outside writer, Shin Kibayashi was that writer. Intelligent Systems wanted Shin to write the outline for each pathway, what happened instead is that Shin wrote 500 pages for each pathway. Intelligent Systems knew this was too long so they cut the story into pieces without the writers permission and the fact the Nintendo demanded Fates come on the Fire Emblem Anniversary only made things worse. She tanks magic and slaughters mages, she is the easiest to level up via the bottomless pit which is infact bottomless. S rank with azura is the only way shigure doesnt become useless via being able to switch to nohr prince via a heart seal. I usually pair azura with subaki.

Maybe Revelations could have been better if it was about Azura trying to reclaim her kingdom and Corrin was trying to prove to her that he/she is more than just the bastard child of the dragon that stole everything from her. And let’s remove that whole Azura and Corrin’s mother being sisters, it serves no purpose and just their to divide a very popular ship.

We need a Nintendo Switch Remaster of Fire Emblem Awakening. It will be the tenth anniversary of the international release, so would be the perfect time. Speaking regarding Fates, there should only have been one linear straightforward narrative without story paths like with Awakening (the Conquest version of the story should be the canon one, scrapping Birthright and Revelations entirely). The very idea of a dual Pokémon style release model inherently ruins the writing. In addition everything about Valla ruins the plot for me, causes plot holes, contrivances and should have been scrapped during development.

In the case of Azura she's not even that bad It's just that they use her mostly as a plot device with the song, and barely touches in Azura as a character And the way she drops Anankos plot in Rev completely contradicts BR and CQ But Azura herself is a great character which unfortunately most of it is hidden behind Supports and Wikia/Side Media Which is unfortunate, because most of Fates characters fall under this Anankos and Corrin are examples that i always give of characters that when i read their wikia and see what they made with them in side stories, makes me feel like i missed most of Fates plot even thought i played though all the 3 games and read the story

Honestly I don't even think "plot" is the right word, I think I could make a bullet point presentation of the plot of Fates and make it seem like the best game in the franchise. There is so much morality and complexity and theming. It's the writing that ruins it all. Like it's almost funny how many FE fans don't know that canonically Norh is starving, as in children are literally starving to death, and that is why they fight Hoshido. And they don't know that because it's only said once, in Birthright, by Silas.

I’ll consider sharing Hoshido’s abundance of resources after this war is over”. Plot is the right word, it’s an outline of all the events from beginning to end. What you are talking about is the synopsis, which indeed sounds great.
