The Dread of Genealogy. A Fire Emblem Video Essay.

Ойындар

A video covering Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War's dark story moments has been an inevitable subject ever since the start of this series. Passers-by of FE4, if anything, probably heard of Sigurd and Arvis, the Battle of Belhalla, Ishtar and Julius, and so on.
But there are so, so many things that actually happen in FE4 that the game doesn't display in plain sight. There are a deluge of events that happen before the game even starts. There are so many key moments explained in dialogue rather than outright shown. Six of these moments are going to be the subject of this video.

    It moved me to tears at times. Hearing these tragic stories. Although hearing stories like that also fills me with a strange sort of hopefulness. I guess it’s because we have to remind ourselves there is still a lot of good in the world. This is related to whoever’s quote it was about evil not being black and white when talking about the Loptuans. I forget who that was. Nice job on this one ghast. I really wish I could play genealogy myself one day. So many cool characters and amazing storylines.

    Fe4 has a hidden special ending if you clear the game with an overall A-rank. It's a short cutscene showing the yied temple surrounded by flushing green nature filled with life. It symbolizes that Seliph took Lewyn’s advice about "true evil" and saved the loptous followers. This is why the yied temple is shown to be empty. Seliph did what the crusaders before him failed to do, and in that, he actually created the ideal world that Arvis always wanted. It's poetic in a way.

    Three House really does take a lot inspirations from Genealogy, Holy warriors and exalted bloodlines, mighty weapons that can decide the fate of the world, a culture that was erased from history save a few sparse mentions, and a war started by the actions of someone who was simply doing what they believed was right. There is a lot of lore to digest with these games, and with a lot of it we have to find context clues to get the whole picture, but that's what I'm all about.

  • @Caddance

    @Caddance

    Fr. I get that Ishtar never took part in the abuse and comforted Tine, and she could only do so much. But it’s like Augustus said about Reinhardt, if you have power, and you see people suffering and could something about it and don’t, then it doesn’t matter how ‘honorable’ of a person you are: You let those things happen and that makes you complacent in those things and therefore bad. Ik Ishtar did secretly send the kids that were meant to be sacrificed to safety, but that doesn’t make up for the fact she knows at some level what is happening around her is wrong (like. She definitely knows the abuse that Hilda put Tine and Tailtu through is wrong otherwise she wouldn’t comfort her) It really just screams to me “Not as big of an asshole as you could have been.” (And to be fair, I’m not even saying Ishtar should have done something, I like morally gray characters and I like that Ishtar doesn’t quite know the difference between right and wrong to the full extent since she was raised by well. Hilda and Bloom. But I agree that as a result of that moral grayness she doesn’t really deserve to be remembered as some sort of tragic hero that unfortunately Heroes tried to push with ascended Ishtar. I don’t mind Tine being conflicted, but I would have liked something with Olwen more when in her ending, whenever she thinks of her brother, she feels a mixture of pity and anger, likely because Augustus was right: He is an awful person because he doesn’t have anything backing him up like other Camus’s and doesn’t have a reason to be complacent in the face of the awful things Friege does) TLDR: Ishtar was a cool concept of how even people that aren’t nessecarily ‘bad’ can be shaped and wrapped by the bad people around them but she just kinda sucks in my opinion because the game and Heroes treats her like some tragic hero when she isn’t

    @@CaddanceI agree a lot with this, and I'd like to add to nourish your well-filled point that Ishtar also opposed the rebel army. Those who were directly opposing the horrible acts she saw happening around her. And she did more than any villain by 3 times throughout the story, and may be considered through in-game script and her stats their most lethal enemy and most heavy cause of causalities. And same I like that she is such a 'morally gray/ anti-villain' character. Good at heart but around the wrong people. And I also like call her out on her complicity all the same. I do as well didn't like how her ascended alt in Heroes tried to paint her as some "Hero" she's not. While also knowing it's made from her acts of starting to oppose the Empire in some form during her life last part.

    @@stick9898 Yessss thisss I love your add on!! I will state I’ve actually never played either games or seen it to it entirety, I only know bits and pieces so I’m glad that my comment was well written and makes sense. I will add on another thing!! I really do like Ishtar’s concept as a character, that there’s a certain line to all the bad things she witnesses where she can no longer be complacent. She is better than Reinhardt in that instance, who did nothing against the child hunts. It really is interesting to see a ‘bad’ person who isn’t entirely ‘bad’ and see where they cross that line of what is acceptable to them and what isn’t. The problem is what they find acceptable we don’t, and as a result, while Ishtar is more complicated as a character, she still doesn’t deserve to be remembered as a hero because she directly opposed the rebel army who was fighting to liberate Jugdral. It’s just as I said. She’s just not as much of an asshole as she could have been, and while that makes her complex, she doesn’t deserve to be remembered as a hero by history or the games (including Heroes of course)

    This is why I love fe4. It's story is very dark but it is still hopefully, despite all this grim there is a light at the end of the tunnel. I wish we had more grim in Fe, I miss this fine balance of grim and positivity. It's a beautiful story and I fear of a remake as much as I yearn for one because I don't trust modern Fe (or more to the point, modern Nintendo) to respect this story and leave it intact.

My guess is no. And that scares me cause more people need to see that fire emblem CAN be serious. 3 house moved in the right direction but genealogy could really hit differently for so many people if it's not tampered with.

    The Loptyr Sect is given a sympathetic backstory and a history of persecution to why they hate everyone in the world and why they still cling to worshiping an evil dragon god. Problem I see is that sympathetic backstory is given only through *telling* and not actually *showing* how tough they had it being persecuted. Would've liked to see Loptyrian women and children outside of evil-looking old dudes. Thracia 776 does have Salem and Sara but by the time you recruit them, they already knew that the Loptyr Sect weren't cool anyways. At least the manga saves that flaw.

    I love FE4, it's probably my favourite game in the series. I replayed it twice this summer, and enjoyed both replays a lot. This video is a great opportunity for me to share my **personal** opinion on the game's story, thanks Ghast, it was wonderful. Had me glued to my phone for the whole thing. My main issue with FE4, and pretty much all Kaga games is just the sheer amount of expo dumping they have. The form it takes can be varied, it can be justified, can be not, but the fact is that it's there, and to me personally, it's really distracting. I've had a recent Kaga Saga binge, where i replayed everything from Berwick to Vestaria Saga 2, and i can safely say, all of his games are guilty of it. Even though i haven't replayed TRS i this binge, i remember it having a lot of expo dumps as well, like the infamous Bishop Lee lecture, among many others. And VS2's story is just bad, don't quote me on that, i don't like it at all. However, both Berwick and VS1 are plagued by this. Berwick to a much lesser degree, VS1 i remember being really bored by the exposition. I agree with you here that it's because of the engine. The FE and, to a lesser extent, Kaga Saga engine, really doesn't lend itself well to any other method of storytelling besides conversations. It's really hard to show instead of tell, because the engine just isn't built for that. However, even with this, it falls flat for me. Like, come on, we really couldn't have an even where, when Sigurd seizes... Agustria or some shit, where he witnesses a man being burned at the stake for supposedly "being Loptryian" and stops it? I don't think it would have been that expensive or time consuming to do. It also could have been a nice way to get a playable Dark Mage to join Sigurd, but that would actually have been more expensive because of having to consider the balancing and the lover conversations, talk conversations in general, and the like. But this doesn't apply in every situation, you couldn't really do something like this to explain what's going on in Isaac or other plotlines that happen far away from Sigurd and his motley crew. And i also want to talk about the convo between Seliph and Lewyn after siezing the castle in Yied with the Fenrir dark bishop, forgot what it's called. I have an issue with how on the nose it is, it's, as far as i remember, the only time when the game so blatantly spells out it's theme, and it bothers me. It's almost perfect if not for the whole "Good and evil can't be reduced to such black and white notions" schtick, and it, again, bothers me a lot. I, personally, like it when the theme is left for me to discover, and that conversation would have already conveyed what Lewyn told Seliph, so it feels really unnecessary. Now you could say that i'm biased, unreasonable, and all that... Wait, are you telling me that i'm human? No way, who would have thought that i, as a human, have had experiences that shaped my perspective and interests that can be biased towards a particular opinion... Now, if you've read up to this point, thank you a lot, genuinely. It can be really hard to read such a giant block of text on KZread, so i really appreciate you for taking time out of your day to read my comment. Whether our opinions align or not, it's okay, i just wanted to voice my perspective. Have a great day and good luck, once again, thank you

    This video was awesome! I really liked how you organized the story and how you told us about such a tragic and yet hopeful story! I think Deirdre is one of my favorite characters from Fire Emblem, specially because of Feh! Yeah, I know, the mobile game actually made something remarcable with her legendary version. There is one quote from her legendary alt in the game that she states that she made mistakes and lead two tragic lifes, and yet, she would do everything all the same again if she could. She says that she also found bliss and hapiness even among such sad turns of events of her life and wouldn't exchange that. Considering everything that happened to her and everyone she cares about, I think it's very brave of her to have said that, and I mean that in a good way. If we think about it, her life with Sigurd was the first time she actually created memories, it was the first time her life had any meaning to her. I'm sorry to bring the mobile game again, but I also loved duo Sigurd version with Deirdre. In their dialogue, we get to see how much Sigurd means to her. Before meeting him, she was all alone and her life was empty. Then, she got to see the world around her, to meet new people and to live her life surrounded by Sigurd's love and even with baby Seliph's love! And I think it's very touching the fact that she wouldn't trade that even knowing what would happen to her and the others.

  • @brightlight8852

    @brightlight8852

    That's a common thing with Deirdre. Her relationship with Sigurd is a relationship that she wanted and chose for herself. It's actually fitting that the relationship that she chose for herself is the one that ultimately saves Granvale. Seliph is called the scion of Light because he is the true king, his mere existence calls into question Julius's claim to the throne, his father always fought against the evil in Granvale, and now Seliph is taking up his mantle. It shows that Deirdre's love for Sigurd wasn't a mistake, it wasn't cursed.

    Damn, great timing. I just finishing a playthrough of FE4. Ishtar is another tragic figure here-she’s been gaslit by Hilda into believing she loves Julius (and maybe she does) but she, unlike Tine, doesn’t feel like she has the option to turn on the rebels. Also, we kill Ishtor pretty early on, and so even though Ishtar probably would have come around to Seliph’s side with a good discussion, she can’t fight against her parents along the people who murdered her brother. That would take an extreme sense of responsibility, which Ishtar (and nobody really in FE4) seems to have. So she digs herself into a hole getting closer to Julius and goes down fighting because she doesn’t see another way out. Finn is also pretty tragic, especially if you follow the theories that he and Beowulf both loved Lachesis and that Nanna is his daughter while Diarmuid is Beo’s daughter. Likewise, Faval and Patty never learn their mother is alive, do they? There’s no mention of them in FE5 when Finn tells Eyvel that she must be Brigid.
