Why awkwardness is your secret weapon for risk-taking at work | Henna Pryor | TEDxQueensVillage
We'd all love to know how to take more risks and push through resistance in order to smash our professional and personal goals. It sounds good in theory, but most of us have a hard time moving from wishful thinking to execution. Why? Because when we have a chance to take a risk in the moment, we feel awkward. In this talk, join Workplace Performance Expert and Executive Coach, Henna Pryor, as she unpacks this universal emotion and teaches us how the key to taking more risks at work lies not in eliminating awkwardness, but in conditioning for it instead. Henna Pryor, PCC is an award-winning Keynote Speaker, Executive Coach and Facilitator, and Workplace Performance Expert. Her clients call her their “secret weapon for impossible change,” an honor she wears proudly.
Following an illustrious 14 year professional staffing career as an industry leader, she has been invited to speak to a variety of global organizations including Google, Workday, US Bank, Johnson & Johnson, FIS Global, and more. She has also been featured in articles for media including Forbes, Real Simple, Fast Company, and more.
Henna founded her company, Pryority Group, to realize a vision that transformational speaking, coaching, and performance growth workshops shouldn't be limited to the C-Suite, and because she believes the key to most people's success is leaning into awkwardness a little more and worrying about stinking a little less. (She might just have you do both.) Her first book - Awkward & Upward! - comes out in 2023. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I love the concept of improvement mindset versus approval mindset. It's a good way to reframe how to take control of our own goals and aspirations.

Wow, I never thought about the connection between awkwardness and the fear of not meeting expectations. It's like we're trapped in a cycle of seeking approval. Time to break free and embrace our own goals!

Wow, this talk really opened my eyes to the impact of social norms on our behavior. It's crazy how we start conforming and caring so much about what others think as we grow up. Time to break free and embrace the awkwardness!
This makes me rethink how often I avoid awkward situations. It's true; personal growth often comes from embracing discomfort. Thanks for the insight, Henna.

So glad you found it helpful!
As much as I hate feeling awkward, I can't deny that some of my biggest personal and professional growth has come from pushing past my comfort zone.
Sometimes, we shy away from awkward moments, but they're the stepping stones to growth. It reminded me of the beauty in embracing discomfort, even at this stage of life.

As someone who has spaced out in a meeting or conversation a time or 3 😁, I know first hand what it is like to stumble and remember the last thing said. If I think back on it, it wasn't because the conversation or topic wasn't interesting, it was because I had other things going on in my life that were taking priority in my mind. Now! I won't hesitate to own my momentary spacing out, especially when it is acknowledging what I have going on. Also, as someone who is going to be joining the workforce again, having that awkward conversation about what I know my worth to be when it comes to promotions and pay raise, is something I dread. When that moment arises I will refer back to this talk as my personal hype to do what needs to be done, awkward and all. Thank you for this. ❤️

Thank you for sharing your story and thoughts! Glad it resonated.
I never thought about how an innocent mistake, like calling someone by the wrong name, could have such a big impact on our professional lives. It's definitely a wake-up call to pay attention to the little things.
Awkwardness is like a signpost pointing us towards growth. It might be uncomfortable, but the reward of personal improvement is worth it in the end. Love it.

I totally relate to feeling awkward in the workplace. It's like we're constantly walking on eggshells to please everyone and maybe I've been playing it safe for too long. Maybe it's time to take some risks and embrace the cringe!
It's not just about others' approval but about how you align with your own goals, redefining our own success. Great take, excellent talk.
Life's a constant juggle, working two jobs to provide for my kids. The part about taking risks resonated. Sometimes, you've got to risk feeling awkward to make a better life for your family. It's not always easy, but it's worth it.
I really loved her point about how children don't feel awkward, how it's a learnt behaviour. Made me think about what other feelings aren't organic.

've always been afraid of speaking in public, but Henna's talk inspires me to face my fear and embrace the cringe.
This was so relatable, I've been in situations where people mispronounced my name too, and I didn't correct them. It's comforting to know I'm not alone in feeling awkward about it.
I love her and I love this talk!! Any cringe worthy moment in life is nothing in comparison to the fulfilment and satisfaction in self-improvement and growth.

I am loving the message of the embracing the ick moments, they are the bread and butter of those magical moments where person growth happens. LEVEL UP!
I love how the speaker encourages us to seek out uncomfortable situations to grow. It's like a workout for our personal development. Let's do some reps and build those improvement muscles!
The military taught me discipline, but PTSD adds another layer to navigating the civilian world. The talk's message on taking risks despite awkwardness resonates. Sometimes facing the discomfort head-on is the only way to overcome the ghosts of the past.
She absolutely nails it around the 6:55 mark, thanks for the distinction Henna, definitely made something in my brain click.
Internal motivation fuels the improvement mindset, no doubt about it. I started setting goals that ignite my inner fire and it's been so good! Right on!
I've been in Hannah's shoes before. It takes guts to correct someone, but it's about valuing your identity over approval.
It's intriguing how societal norms make us avoid awkwardness at all costs. This definitely made me think should we challenge those norms for personal growth?
Henna's talk really struck a chord with me. I've been in situations where I should have spoken up but didn't because of fear of awkwardness. Time to embrace the cringe!
I totally get the feeling awkward about correcting their name. It's tough to assert yourself without worrying about the consequences. But hey, our identity is worth fighting for!
I can relate to the struggle of seeking approval from others. It's like we're trapped in a never-ending cycle. But I agree with the speaker that it's time to prioritize our own goals and jump into the unknown!
Well this is certainly interesting! I have to agree, I've always found the more often you move through an emotion the easier it becomes to navigate. It makes a lot of sense that awkwardness would be the same.
This is a really cute approach to navigating what could otherwise be really stressful situations!
Haha, I can totally relate to those awkward work moments! It's like the universe conspires to make us cringe. I've never thought embracing the awkwardness might actually lead to personal growth, though. Worth a shot!
I got to see Henna give this amazing talk. As someone who works with awkward people-- I think this talk is a must view-Caroline Maguire

The societal expectations mentioned seem trivial in the grand scheme. Approaching life with an improvement mindset, despite its challenges, is a profound concept. It's a perspective shift we all could use.
I have to admit, I struggle with taking risks because I hate feeling awkward. But the speaker's words really resonate with me. Maybe it's time to push past that discomfort and aim for personal improvement.
Congratulations, Henna! I’m proud of you.

These stories had me laughing out loud! Who knew workplace awkwardness could be this entertaining? We should all learn to laugh at ourselves more.
Definitely can relate to what she says about how we start to care what other people think of us and then play it safe, play to "not lose" instead of to win...

I would love to see us all trade the fear of awkwardness for the thrill of personal progress! It's time to break free from the approval trap!
Henna's advice on seeking out strategic micro stressors sounds interesting. I'm going to try implementing that in my professional life and see where it takes me.
this is refreshing af. love it
I never thought of awkwardness as a cue for personal improvement. That's a refreshing perspective. Maybe it's time to reframe those cringe-worthy moments and use them as stepping stones
Change is the key to improvement. Like changing your workout routine to keep progressing!
It's fascinating how our brains evolve and make us more self-conscious as we grow, I will continue to blame societal conditioning.
My heart really went out to Henna talking about how often people get her name wrong. I mean even the captions of her TEDx talk have gotten her name wrong 😅🙈

Honestly, I think I'll stick to the approval mindset. Sure, it may not lead to personal growth, but it keeps me safe and comfortable. Avoiding awkward situations? Yes, please! 🙅♂

Identity is more important than approval. Routine reduces abilities for improvement.
Yeah we are absolutely taught that to go against standard social behaviour is wrong and we should feel ashamed about then wonder why everyone has such a hard time figuring out who they truly are! Ridiculous.

Okay, I get it, we should embrace the awkwardness and take risks. But what about the fear of failure? It's not easy to overcome that voice in our heads telling us we'll mess everything up.
I would disagree that our desire to fit in goes up, I think we just want to feel connected and like we have a sense of community.

The cringe chasm is real, folks. But you know what? I'm ready to jump headfirst into the awkwardness and see what happens. I'm ready to level up and unlock my full potential!
I think situations that have the capacity for awkwardness only get there if you're already approaching it in that way. Like if you're confident while correcting someone or even getting punched in the chest instead of hugged lol you can turn that situation around and have it be endearing by the end of it. Not so much messaging something snarky about a client _to_ the client.... there's no coming back from that 😂😂

It's interesting how our fear of awkwardness keeps us from reaching our full potential. Maybe it's time to challenge ourselves and embrace those cringe-worthy moments. Who knows what we might achieve?
Maybe the business world is just super different to other industries because I'm taking risks _all. the. time._ and I certainly DGAF about fitting in or not
Lol I'm sorry but picturing a seven year old saying "this is awkward but..." was surprisingly cute! She's right though, I've never seen that.
I'm all for taking risks and stepping out of our comfort zones, but sometimes the fear of awkwardness can be really paralyzing, like people will know that it's not a natural thing for you. It's easier said than done, you know?

I'm sorry at the 3:01 mark is she saying she didn't apologize for that text??

Lol gee that's a bit rude!
Job hunting can be frustrating, and I've had my fair share of awkward moments. The speaker's emphasis on embracing discomfort struck a chord. It's like, yeah, maybe the job interview didn't go perfectly, but if it helps me improve and get closer to my goals, why not?
I get the idea, but isn't there a line between embracing awkwardness and the risk of looking unprofessional?
In other words be more comfortable around other people.
Hmm, I'm not convinced that seeking approval is always a bad thing. We're social creatures, and it's natural to care about what others think. It's all about finding a balance, I guess.
hmm.....
Not really understanding why it would be awkward to correct someone for not getting your name right?
I'm all for seeking out strategic micro stressors, but can we please skip the awkward small talk at networking events? That's a stressor I can definitely do without
I don't know, I think the speaker is exaggerating a bit. Awkward moments happen, sure, but it's not like they define our entire professional lives. We shouldn't be so obsessed with what others think
Here we go again another talk on people wanting to fit in.
Talk about awkward - having a colleague punch you in the chest when you were going in for a hug.....

Awkward and a few other things too!
I prefer the comfort zone, but maybe it's time to cross the cringe chasm. 🙈
Honestly, I think the speaker is blowing things out of proportion. Awkwardness is just a minor inconvenience in the grand scheme of things. Let's not overanalyze every little uncomfortable moment
While I appreciate the message, it's not always easy to take risks at work, especially if you're in a high-stakes job. I don't think this talk really addresses those situations.
I'm sorry I can't get over them calling her "Helen" for so long, honestly does she look like a Helen?? Those names don't even sound similar. Lol if I was in that situation I would be angry, not awkward.
Nah, I think the speaker is overthinking things. Awkwardness is just a fleeting moment, and it shouldn't hold us back. Let's focus on our goals and forget about the cringe.
