WHY ARE YOU SO NEGATIVE!!

FROM THE VIDEO:
"Most people are familiar with the whole “glass half full, or glass half-empty analogy. I've come to the realization that I'm a very pessimistic person by nature. I tend to focus on the negative - the glass being half empty. It wasn't always like that though. I've been through so much pain and have so many fears that I obsess over the worst case scenario.
So, half empty - or half full? Typically people will identify with one of these - at least a good chunk of the time...Researchers like UC Davis's (Alison Ledgerwood) point out that through training and awareness, you can change the way you see the glass.
Alison's team did this really cool experiment where they brought two groups of people into the lab and told them about a new surgical procedure. The first group was told that the procedure had a 70% success rate. The second group was told that the surgery had a 30% failure rate... It's literally the same surgical procedure - with the exact same information - but one of the doctors was focusing on the positive, and the other focusing on the negative.
Of course people liked the procedure more when it was framed in a positive way. They didn't like it so much when the doctor focused on the failure rate.
Then, they did something really interesting... They emphasized to the first group that they could also see it as failing 30% of the time. All of a sudden, people didn't like the procedure anymore!!!
They did something similar with the second group by re-framing the surgery with a 70% success rate... People still didn't change their mind! This was done in many other similar studies and the results were the same... People naturally dwell on the negative... The glass half-empty... especially if someone points it out to them. Somehow they get stuck on it."

Rooting for you over here in my little corner of the world. One of my favorite quotes by my personal bipolar hero was Carrie Fisher. I got it tattooed on my arm as a reminder to keep moving forward and never give up. "It takes alot of balls to be mentally ill. It takes 3 or 4 balls. It takes a certain type of HEROISM. Glad to know there are others who find out so late. I am 43 and just found out and so lucky I found Robs videos.
I have bipolar disorder and I'm from Indonesia. When I was hypomanic I quit my job and wanted to do a master's abroad. After a year of struggle, I managed to get accepted at The University of Manchester and got a fully-funded scholarship. I'm beyond happy that I will study abroad for free next year. But at the same time, I'm a little bit anxious because it will be my first time living thousands miles away from home. Sometimes I questioned my decision to do a master's. Do I really want it? Because I was hypomanic when I made the decision. But after a year, I still find my course fascinating and I've already read some books and papers that are recommended. Moreover, I need to continue taking medications in the UK and I've been researching about mental health treatment there. Wish me luck!
I needed to here this. Today has been really hard.

4:08, How interesting Rob that you talk of emotional hallucinations. It took me years to figure that one out, these thoughts and feelings together I call "inner hallucinations". They are the most difficult to identify because they are so invisible, you cannot easily check them objectively.
"Giant purposeful effort to replace them with their positive polar opposite...repetition" another Great Tool for today, thanks! 🙏
You do a great job at explaining Bipolar disorder and helping people feel like they are not alone. I have watched your videos a lot and have learned a lot through them. Thank you for your dedication to helping people.
My life has been rough so I am pessimistic by nature. Drug abusing parents, 2 car accidents by said parents, abuse, and not getting help with my bipolar until I was 26. All I know is bad news so I was programmed to be pessimistic. When I'm manic I am happier but quick to anger. Depressed I am sad all the time and pessimistic about everything. Hard to be optimistic when society pushes us to be pessimistic all the time. Social media doesn't help either tbh.

but you also putting more problem that's if you are more positive unnecessary in other words it's isn't the society it's the fact we have been hard wire to act more on negative thing for protection which work great before modern times but now it's not only causing problem is cause unnecessary one too
I'm noticing that the more I watch these videos, the more I have come to a better understanding of my illness. It has created a better sense of self awareness. Thank you Rob. You're awesome 👍

Reframing things is one exercise I do too but it could be very tiring. It's like course correction and I have to explain to other people why I'm feeling exhausted. That sometimes feels more tiring and difficult than already having to spin things for the positive than they first seem.

Thank you for your content to make us not feel so different and alone . See what I truly love and “am” always changes. That’s why it’s so hard to gauge. I’ve changed jobs/careers so many times. Moved all over the country… After Covid I took time to try and start a blog on mental health and breaking the stigma and how being in nature helps. I thought that I would never lose interest in. I love helping orhers. But even that I have no desire to do anymore. I’m just tired. And my family says “I always figure it out, that’s why I amaze them” But I just want to think like others sometimes and have consistency.
I think there's more to it also Rob, I think I have the trickle of negative thoughts/feelings to counteract the danger of hypomania/mania, and also to guard against the deep drop after a high. I don't enjoy them at all, it's all a bit of a mess really. In fact, I don't really know why, I have these theories though.
Just found your video after feeling like I'm the most horrible person because several people in the last year have told me I'm negative and I'm hard to be around. I became so isolated as a senior during covid for 2 years, and I retired at the exact same time, so I lost my identity as a member of the workforce, and I became 100% isolated as I live alone. I've struggled to come out of that dark place. Thank you for the honesty of your video. I suffer from depression as well, but this gives me a frame to work out of to try to repetitively change some thoughts that I've been struggling with

Amazing! Thankyou!
I have an odd combination of Positive Thinking which descends rapidly into catastrophizing. Maybe it's just my cycling, but it can be devastating to experience thoughts like, "Everything is great and is on target to work out fine." to, "I'm just part of a plot which is trying to find out how far they can push a person before they break." As you say, it can be hard to pull back from those dark thoughts.

I understand that I'm negative a good portion of the time. I also understand that slightly depressed people are more realistic about outcomes. I try to see my negativity as a chance to create a more positive outcome. I have to be careful of toxic positivity, because it tends to be a little manic and delusional. Just seeing and understanding that there is a positive doesn't mean it's heading towards the positive. I choose to influence positivity with my negativity.
I try to look at things from a million different angles to find the truth but sometimes the negativity is too strong and the worst case scenario seems the only feesable answer. Your awesome Rob. You put to words the way we all feel.

Considering challenges from multiple angles, and researching possible contributing factors has helped me untangle why a plan of care might not be working as hoped. I'm the same with meds I don't wanna be like a zombie like I was when I was sic from type1 phoysocis when I came from flordia when my aunt and dad gave me a choice put me somewhere or go with ur mom to flordia to visit in june then came back to va over summer in aug right after my birthday and feeling lime a complete zombie from the meds like my dad aunt and my best friends dad thought I was moving like an old man and still a little or maybe it's the same as I was when I was normal had some anger temper back then right before the physosicius and type 1 came up bipolar but I go back to the doctor this coming up this week on dec 2nd so I'm sure I'll be put on somethin different and have side effects where it make my heart feel funny or it won't work or make me faint once I get up fast without waiting 1 to 3 minutes or make me feel dizzy I don't doubt it or a combination of both meds capylta for my ocd that comes from bipolar and the other new I know they'll put me on so I don't hallicated but I'm sure it don't work that way I know I'll have to get off the med cayplyta to stop the halications cus I dident have none until I started takin that and I had one from the big dose of invaga I used to take gave me tremors from the small dose but anyway I hallicated one time with the big dose of it
I have always looked at the cup as half way but the distinguishing factor is, is it being filled or emptying
I’m very negative i focus on worst case scenario all the time. I’ve pushed so many people away or just scared them away. I really have no one

Hi Melanie, I really relate, I've been obsessed with reliving my past mistakes and thinking about all the people I drove away. I just try to remember that I did the best I could with what I had. My therapist also reminds me that it takes two to tangle, the other people are responsible too. Rob offers one on one support on Patreon if you are interested. I sometimes feel like a monkey on a string and the pendulum just keeps getting farther away from my axle. I hate my bipolar II.
My journey includes investigating other disorders like CPTSD and ADHD
