A MUST SEE For Our Partners, Family, and Friends...

This is such a BRILLIANT perspective! I encourage you to share this with your partner, family, or friends who are "trying to be there" for you. Sometimes we get frustrated when someone tries to help us, and often the person offering help end up frustrated too. This situation can be avoided sometimes if we can all look at the situation from a different angle. This is probably my personal favorite of videos I've shared so far on Patreon. I hope it helps and I'd love to hear what you all think!
I'm going to make this video available to ALL Patrons, regardless of support level - because I feel it's a really important tool for everyone. ENJOY =)

HI WARRIORS: I decided to post this video as an example of the casual-style videos that I regularly post for our Warriors in our Patreon Community. I have quite the collection of additional videos there, and an amazing solution-based community of people who support each other like family. It’s really become a special and safe place for those with bipolar disorder. If my channel is making a difference in your life, you can make a huge impact in my ability to help others by donating as little as $3 a month by becoming a Patron. This will allow you to message me directly anytime, and of course you can cancel anytime you like. I’m asking everyone’s support in the community to help us keep an incredible free resource going ❤️☀️ Rob Whittaker, Polar Warriors

It can really be so hard living with someone that has bipolar - with so many manic (and aggressive) episodes who also refuses to get help, does nothing healthy & literally only self medicates bc in their mind "they are not bipolar" & it really hurts. Such a helpless feeling... 😭💔 & thank you for reminding me - We cant take mental illness away... ~ research, learn & support ~

SillyMe BeeLuu I guess if they don’t have a diagnosis they very well may not be Bipolar. Manic behaviour can come out in personality disorders aswell. But ofcourse if you’re watching these videos then you are probably educated with the signs to look out for. I do however think that a person who refuses to get help is not your problem. I’ve had to swallow my pride so many times. But I just have. Because that’s what life is. Times of stability and times of reaching out because truth is you’re not doing too well. You know though I was the guy like him who didn’t want help. Because I was trying to not be a burden. Maybe that’s his mindset. Have you tried to dive into his mind to be curious on what he’s thinking?

Thank you, Rob. This was just what I needed to hear today. My husband has bipolar. We've been married just two years and it's not the first time for either of us. He was upfront, with his bipolar with me, which is probably a huge thing to tell a new person. He takes meds, but that was really all he's done for 33 years. I come along and as I've gotten to know him, I have taken care of just about everything for him, but if he's not the one initiating his own help, then i feel he's not truly wanting to get better, or at the very least, understand his illness, so HE can relate better to me and the rest of the world. I'm so tired and I'm so empty of patience with him, yet I love the man he is. What a spot I am finding myself in.

By helping a butterfly out of its cocoon it will die. It has not needed to fight it's way out to strengthen it's wing muscles. The people in our lives mean well and have their best intentions at heart for you, but unwittingly are causing more harm than good. First and foremost we must forgive them, then with loving kindness insist on putting the water in to our own cup and food on our own plate. This all takes great strength which is vital for our survival. Family is wonderful and if dealing with the situation correctly can be a blessing. As pointed out in this video, so long as the plate they hand you is not empty.

This video made me cry tears of gratitude because it feels like you made this video just for me, in response to a thank you I posted after another of your videos. I’m sure this was for many others, as well; but the fact you made it today, and I made the comment yesterday, is the reason it feels like it was made just for me, and that felt very special. Very well said, Rob! It's important to realise that at the end of the day, we're on our own. My Mam was so supportive and worried that when she passed away, there would be no one to look after "poor Anne" when she was ill. Sure enough, the rest of the family dropped me like a hot cake. I survived, largely through sympathetic friends and colleagues. So my message to other Polar Warriors would be "take nothing for granted and be prepared to stand on your own feet."

Very well stated point. I played this video for my boyfriend, because he’s seen me not at my best. And has the immediate compulsion to want to fix me. Bless his heart, I know it comes from a place within him not wanting me to be going through what I do, and him being autistic makes it that much harder for him to process and deal with me. But he does, and tries the best he can. I did have to explain to him that all I might need when I’m feeling like worse than shit and curled up into a ball is just for him to hold me. Any fixing of me has to come from me.

But we can sometimes feel neglected if people avoid us. Most of the time it's loneliness for me because either I stay clear of people (avoiding a public outburst) or I don't let them in or, my family stays away from me! I have suffered since I was a child, diagnosed at 33 and I am now 61. The biggest thing is asking for help when I think the whole world is out to get me or is spying on me. Thanks for your videos. Thank you for posting this. My family always gives me an empty plate. I sent my dad this video. I heal through music as wells as meds. I just posted a song I wrote to my KZread about the pain I’ve felt over the years trying to have a relationship with anyone. I’ve been diagnosed with BP1 with psychotic features. I didn’t get the proper diagnosis and meds until a few years ago so I’ve suffered my entire life. Can you make a video about how to deal with loved ones who use avoidance to deal with this. People who sweep everything under the rug.

Thank you for this perspective and this video. My mom was recently diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder, she is currently having a manic episode. My Dad is in denial of her illness which only makes her Mania worse. I am struggling with letting go and just allowing her to continue to do things that are destructive to not only herself but also my younger sister living at home with her. I am scared that if she does not get hospitalized something very bad is going to happen. (Physical harm or worse) It’s hard to know when to detach with love, or when to go to extreme measures (involuntary commitment). I don’t want to have to commit her it’s the last thing I want to do, but at the same time I feel if I don’t do something now she is going to physically harm herself/those around her even if it’s not intentionally. I am doing my best to research and learn about Bipolar, I want to support her in the best way possible, while not enabling her behavior that makes me uncomfortable. Thank you again for this video and any words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated.

If you get a chance I'd like to hear about what you think of both being bipolar and dealing with PTSD on top of the normal struggle and being in relationships with another bipolar or someone who has a different mental disorder like ADHD or BPD (quiet and or normal type). It has gotten extremely difficult because she just recently (last couple years) had spine problems and had to have spine fusion. Now she is diagnosed with arthritis and spinal stinosis , but most doctors hear that she is bipolar and don't want to give pain meds, mental health hospitals barely treat her anxiety or bipolar and gave her Advil for her spine .. no one wants to help in the right way. We have aqua therapy and physical therapy coming up but she is cycling more often due to pain. Hard for her to keep hope alive. I wonder if you have any advice for this unique situation

I love your videos it helps me a lot to deal with my diagnosis. If I only could get my husband to watch them. I’m newly diagnosed well almost a year now and he still is in some kind of denial. Like if he doesn’t know about it it doesn’t exists. I’m tired of dealing with getting myself better and dealing with him to educate himself about it because it would make our life so much easier. Any input from how to handle the situation would be so appreciative.

Talking Bipolar with Tara Bufton thank you for your kind words and my hope is that my husband will get out of his shell and faces reality. He doesn’t know me any different I had my first symptoms when I was 18 but went undiagnosed until I was 36 when I had an total break with reality. He knows my ups and downs we both just got along with it over the years. It just scares him that the ups and downs have a description and a diagnosis now. I love him ( well when had my break with reality I hated him because I thought he was the devil ) he is sticking with me no matter what and I’m so grateful for it. I’m sure that anybody else would have dumped me already out of several reasons. So I’m hopeful he will get around by the time. And also thank you for making me aware of your channel I will certainly check it out and subscribe.

Talking Bipolar with Tara Bufton yes everyone will deal in a different way of coping or accepting this diagnosis it is life changing not only for the one who suffers from it but the entire family too. My husband actually was scared to death. He told me later that he didn’t know what to do. I sounded crazy but also to him some kind of rational well at the beginning. I smelled like the house was on fire and made him search everything, than it was the mice invasion I made him search for that too, next was a water leak ... but when I started talking about people shooting me when I would go outside or we would loose a tire and die if we would take the car. The neighbors working for the government spying on us and the poor old lady next door being the leader of a gang and just waiting to find a moment to raid the house and so on. But when I attempted suicide because everything was out of control he called 911 and from there on things got taking care of. For him it was terrifying and for me just shame and more shame how I behaved and treated people. But all of this made our marriage stronger and I’m grateful for it. So the slogan in good or bad and thick and thin is absolutely true for us as a couple 💑

I need some tips guys, I need to keep these mood swings in check. How do you control your ups and downs? I really need your help! I don’t want to treat people the way I do, they never know who they gonna get. Sweet me or annoyed me. I love my friends and family and I treat them well, but I also know that I’m hard to handle during my ups and downs.

A.C. I know that struggle very well my friend. The best thing I could recommend is to learn as much as you possibly can. New ideas help you see life or choices in ways you might have never seen it before. There are so many videos on this channel that talk about helping manage symptoms and feelings. Take your time going through the videos and I think you’ll find a lot of valuable information here 😊😊

Polar Warriors Hi, thank you so much for answering! I’m trying to learn as much as possible and your videos have helped and are still helping a lot! I haven’t been diagnosed with bipolar, but I recognize myself in everything that you say and almost everything that I’ve read. I got diagnosed with depression and ever since I began taking the medication my mood has began switching even faster and more often. Some periods it even feels like the medicine isn’t working at all. It’s driving me crazy! I read that this also can be a side effect of antidepressants in people with bipolar. However I can’t do any more tests until I’m free of my depression so I’m stuck with these extreme ups and downs. Do you have any advice? I don’t know how to make it better. Thank you for these videos, they are much needed!

Hey man if I could just take a minute of your time to read this it would be great. I am 15 and have been diagnosed with depression for a few years now and I’ve gone to lots of therapy but haven’t taken any medication so Idk what works for me. I could go into detail but to sum in all up I’ve done a lot of research and I think that I might be bipolar. I won’t say too much about it but I was in a mentally traumatic situation for a few years. I know I have had ancestors with depression but idk about bipolar disorder. I can go to my parents about this but I’m trying to get a better understanding of how if I really do have bipolar disorder before I tell them. Mostly because I don’t want to be the boy who cried bipolar and act like i have every mental disorder. Ik you may not read this but if you have any tips I would very much appreciate it. Also I watched your video on rapid cycling and how people are often misdiagnosed with unipolar depression as a result. I think I might rapid cycle because when I talked about my depression I always got depressed every day for a long time but not all day. I would be fine sometimes in the day and then get seriously depressed. I just thought this was normal depression.

George Bee I am so glad that you reached out and I have plans for making a lot of videos that will help a lot of our youth with situations just like yours. There is so much I could say about this but I am unfortunately at the end of a very long day. I was just checking my comments due to this being a new video and really feel for your situation. I think it’s great that you have such a great sense of awareness at your age and being proactive on trying to educate yourself about bipolar disorder (weather bipolar disorder ends up part of your path or not)... if you would like to put together a list of questions, feel free to send me an email. I do get quite a few, so please be patient if it takes me several days or even weeks to respond. I will always get back to people as I’m able. Take good care of yourself, and keep going through some of the videos on my channel. There’s a lot of really good information here and you are absolutely not alone! Hi:) I know this was posted three years ago, but I still wanted to reply just to say I totally understand how this feels, how confusing and isolating it is. I just turned 20 and was finally diagnosed with bipolar 2 back in February of this year, after almost 4 years of going to so many different psychiatrists and therapists begging them to diagnose me. It was so painful to be invalidated for so long when something felt so real to me, being told that they can't diagnose me because I'm "too young and probably am just having teenage mood swings". I was put on antidepressants multiple times which only made things 1000x worse, and had no way of getting real help because I wasn't diagnosed and there for couldn't get the right meds or just tools and support from those around me. the worst part was feeling like I didn't understand myself, after being shut down so many times I always doubted myself and began to minimize my experiences. I can't even put into words how it felt when I finally was diagnosed, right when I heard the words out loud. This sense of relief flooded over me, I started crying.without even realizing then ran to tell my mom right away. it's crazy the idea that just hearing someone else tell you something that deep down you knew was true for so long can mean so much. I've finally starting to find ways to be as stable as I can through the ups and downs, now I can really work towards turning my life around after going through some extremely dark times. I can communicate to those close to me about what I need and also work to understand myself better so I can show up for the people I love and they can show up for me. anyways, this was all just to say, I see you and I know how hard it is to be in diagnosis limbo. I hope you've found some clarity/ answers in the last few years since posting this, if not please please don't give up! no matter how many people tell you you're wrong, trust yourself. ask for help from people around you who you feel safe with and trust, it's not crying bipolar or something to be ashamed of. you deserve to understand yourself. sorry this was way longer then intended, if you read this and feel comfortable sharing, I'd love to hear how things are going for you!

My best friend of a year and a half has since given me many reasons to the point that I’ve found myself here, thinking that she is bipolar. Why it eventually caught my attention I think is because she might be in a manic stage. QI have been naive, angry, confused, understanding, worried...like everything until I saw more to lead me here. I have no idea if she herself knows. We live together and we have not received rent in 3 months, my brother and I can’t continue to support her financially. How do I bring up why I am concerned and thinks she should seek help, if you said in this video, firstly she can only get help when she wants to. I know her and she wouldn’t do anything anyways unless she wanted to. But also how to bring it up if I’m not sure she knows or even thinks bipolar is a possibility for herself. Sorry long comment
