From what I understand and from my own experiences, the creeps is the fear of the unknown. Imagine this: you're in your house alone at night and woke up to have a snack, all of a sudden you hear the door slowly open on its own and you think to yourself: "It's probably just the wind, right?" The thing that makes you scared is the part where you say "right?" Its that there is still a possibility that it ISNT just the wind and that makes you scared, that makes you creeped out.

There's a theory that creepiness is the opposite of amusement. Creepiness occurs when something is weird and our brains don't know what to make of it, so we find it unsettling. Amusement occurs when something is weird but in an obviously non-threatening way, and the contrast results in a pleasurable relief of tension.

When your children scream that there is a monster, but you realize you have no kids...

I would say the perfect example of the uncanny valley is a spazm 2005 doll or the picture from the creepypasta "russian sleep experiment". The picture combine's creepiness with everything in it the eyes, the teeth, the pose, the head, the stare, the black and white filter makes it also very creepy. It's the perfect example of something that has humane form but definetly isn't human, or is it?

Micheal really is amaizing. I always knew things, what they are and how they work, but i could never physically explain it to another individuall. Micheal on the other hand can define things like terror and all kinds of creepiness that exists to a literal 8 year old.

Well, yeah, but sometimes people are genuinely scared of not having a friend or family member with them and just being alone, isolated. Now if you mean someone is scared of being the dark, it could be both. They might be scared of monsters coming to get them, but also not having someone there. They say you always feel safer with a friend at night.

...that’s exactly why people are scared of being ‘alone’. Because they’re vulnerable and don’t have any friendly company so if they encountered a threat, no one would be there to help or give comfort.

@Isaac Thompson Okay, so it could be both. Let's say monsters are real for this example. You could be scared of being alone in a dark room, isolate and lonely, but you could also be scared of a monster hiding in there. You could also be scared of both, you want a friend or family member with you to "protect" you from the "monster." I hope that made sense 😂

For those who know pokemon and have played Sun and Moon or US/UM, the totem mimikyu encounter was scary to me. I guess it was just a combination of what Mimikyu's backstory is alongside ingame effects and cutscenes.

Jumpscares aren't really creepy, they just surprise you momentarily, so it'd kinda defeat the point. A distorted human face slowly appearing from the dark is much more creepy.

Fun fact: When Pixar made finding Nemo, they could have made the water more realistic and closer to real water, but it triggered the uncanny valley effect so they kept it looking more like a cartoon.

I believe another one of the reasons was because making the water too realistic made it less immersive. During development, people found that the hyper-realistic water clashed too hard with the cartoony fish

Bro one time when I was like 11 I had the flu and woke up delirious in the middle of the night and saw a break in the shadows behind the open door to my room, and it was shaped like the blade of a scythe peeking out from behind the door. I couldn't sleep for the rest of the night, and would be uneasy whenever seeing it pretty much for the rest of my childhood. Also when I was younger my parents FOR SOME REASON placed a singular giant painting of a clown lady alone on our basement wall. I was terrified of going down there, and I wasn't even scared of clowns normally. One night I had a nightmare that the painting floated off the wall, went upstairs, and stared at me while I was sleeping. My brain hates me lmao
