Why are so many Samsung 870 EVO drives failing ?

Ғылым және технология

An unsually high rate of Samsung 870 EVO drives are failing and dying often with many CRC read errors. This video highlights this issue. I discuss my own Samsung 870 EVOs failure.

I've watched sadly as so many technologies have been dumbed down until they barely work. Let's face it: Solid state flash memory, and any device with it soldered in, is disposable. It's outrageous that you must buy a drive larger than you need just to cover the manufacturer's a** as the thing fails. If a manufacturer of a spinning disk recommended that, he wouldn't sell a single unit. What other insulting technologies have we had to accept? Computers and phones without replaceable batteries is the most obscene. Every version of Windows is more hostile than the last. Subscription software is pretty vile as well. I'm a retired programmer, and I have 14 Windows computers. The one I'm using now has Windows 7 and 3 spinning disks (because my data is important).

Oh my favorite one has to be the audio market. Decent amps and DACs that used to be standard for all mid range appliances (TVs, computers) and even some low end audio systems like PC speakers, started being sold on the side for hundreds of dollars/euros. If i want to buy a cheap headphone amp today i will be referred to a 100 dollar gizmo by the """"""audiophiles""""" that will have the same "acceptable for the price" performance as my 15 euro bargain bin PC speakers i bought 20 years ago. They even unironically tried to phase 3.5mm headphone jacks out as a standard feature.

My favorite part is the fucking laptop manufacturers seriously rtx 3050 with 4gb vram and single channel 16gb ddr4? Wtf is wrong with these manufacturers? Don't they have some understanding of 10years use? Sadly i had to buy another 16gb to make my laptop run in dual channel but also i have sata port for another drive and i wanted to get this 870 evo but after watching this video idk what to do maybe go with seagate barracuda hdd 1tb 7200rpm 2.5" 128mb\s anyways it pisses me off because in turkey the prices are off the roof and they want to give us something thats shitty and broken the f samsung? I'm sorry but that sata port i got on my laptop is good since i can have a sata drive for my photos movies and that type of buisness maybe install another operating system on it? But anyways this still pisses me of you want a storage drive you have to deal with 1 month lifespan

I got a 870 EVO back in October made in August of 2023, it already had the latest firmware installed on it as of writing this comment. I plugged it in pretty much immediately and now 2 months later (although only about 250GB written), it's at the completely healthy status.

Appreciate the information here. I've heard about 870 reliability issues, but was never quite sure where that stemmed from. I took a risk and purchased a 500 GB 870 EVO, and mine has a manufacture date of 2022.11. I've been using it a few weeks, keeping an eye on the SMART data. Seems to check out here. I'm surprised by just how much Samsung has fallen with the quality of their NAND, though. These should have been pulled until a fixed revision were available. Prior to this, I've only owned 840 and 860 Pros.

Managed to find a used early 2018 batch 860 EVO 4TB for a good deal on ebay couple months ago. Only had about 30TBW on it. Have way more faith in it than these 870s. I have had quite a few 860s as boot drives for some years and none have had errors. I feel like the 870s suffered quality control during the height of pandemic and during silicon/chip shortage which would explain alot of these failures.

Thanks for making this video. I'm an IT guy and upgraded a few office PC's to the EVO870. Had 3 of them fail, 2 developed bad blocks a bare 3 months into service (90 day power on time) and this is standard / light office use, no gaming or intense read / write sequences. The 3rd one has run for 836 days (DOM is 11.2021)and in the past week developed 1083 uncorrectable errors. Fortunately I use a *free* app called Acronis Drive Monitor which monitors the SMART and sends warning emails if it detects critical errors, so I was able to intervene before it died. Only bummer though is I replaced the dodgy 870 with another 870 and then found this video! Clearly Samsung dropped the ball on this, reminds of the Fujitsu disk debacle (yes I'm that old).

I woke up this morning to my server being dead. Tried rebooting it, but it couldn't find my Windows OS which I had located on my Samsung 870 EVO 2TB. Took the SSD out of the server, and plugged it into my Windows laptop via a SATA to USB 3.0 adapter. Nothing. File Explorer doesn't pop up with the contents of the drive, Disk Manager doesn't see it, Samsung Magician doesn't see it, and then after a few minutes, Windows pops up a notification that it doesn't recognize the USB device plugged in. Tried it on a known working SSD, and it works. Looks like my Samsung EVO 2TB drive is DEAD. I had your video playing in the background while trying to troubleshoot this drive and when you said anything manufactured November of 2021 or later seems to be safe, I looked down at my drive and saw the dreaded date stamp.... 2021.04. Connected it to another computer and I have the same issue, shows up but you can't open or do anything with it. Hard Disk Sentinel and Crystal Disk Info freeze, and Samsung Magician doesn't get past "Scanning for drive information". That's a reason to pick up a HDD. Despite being very slow compared to SSD's, they are much more reliable and if you're lucky they can last long. Toshiba is best for low failure rates, whereas Seagate drives have the best lifespans, but the failure rates are high. If you want a drive that lasts longer but the chances of failing should be low, then I'd recommend WD instead, as they usually last longer than a Toshiba but less than a Seagate. But it all depends on luck. You can have a Toshiba drive last many years. It also depends on what you use the drives for.

There are already over 100,000 bad blocks. The warranty says you can write 600TB to it I couldn't have written more than 5TB to it in that period. I had just replaced a conventional 2TB drive that had 50TB written to it over a period of nine years before it failed. I know this failure is an exception but... it really makes me consider going back to a conventional drive. This was a failure spread throughout the drive in a short period. Well, 18 months later I try to format it to use as just extra storage, but, WHEN win10 does recognize the drive it shows NO free space as well as NO data and keeps asking for a reformat to make the drive usable. Same issue here ; samsung 870 EVO 1 TB , just died . Bought in October 2021 , fabricated in August 2021. Last week I did a complete disk back up of this disk to an older hdd en I encountered som issues . I had an amount of corrupted jpg. files and some other compressed files .So today , my whole system froze , and after reset no program that has any relations withe this ssd , starts up . Cannot check my disks or run chkdsk , no HWMonitor, no Windows File Explorer . So in order to close down and restart, I had to hot-plug this apparently dead body .Now everything works fine and I am left with a corpse . I doubt the samsung guaranty , moreover , there is critical company info on it , so I will not give it in strangers hands anyway . I shall look for replacement , it will be definitively no Samsung , altough other brands will probably have their screwups too . But I had my fair share of to early break downs of Samsung products . If they work , they are great , but they have to have a descent life expectancy .)

Very cool. The first time ever i need to buy a SSD is when apparently all the brands and models previously regarded as reliable are now considered the most unreliable drives ever. Oh and what's this? Looks like i am just in time to experience all manufacturers colluding in dialing down production to artificially inflate the prices! Because of course this would be legal, why would consumers have any protection and why would brands not try to fuck them at every opportunity? Started making garbage under the same brand now that your market is established? Time to pump those prices up! Yeah buddy! Drives that costed 50 euros yesterday now cost 90. Yesterday i placed an order for 860 for 80 euros to avoid this, today that order is canceled cause "sorry, no stock XD" and the drive is being sold for 200 euros everywhere. So cool. It's great. Life is great. I feel like Al Pacino at the end of scent of a woman: i want to take a fucking flame thrower to this place. Sorry if this has only a slim relation to your video.
