I was holidaying with my cousin (who has autoimmune disease of joint pain and severe eczema) in Greece. She was there for 9 months. We ate a diet rich in night shades. While there her eczema cleared up. She also had blood work checked which she emailed her doctor back home to go prep for a conference call. He was amazed at how much she improved. My guess on the therapeutic nature of Greece is that veggies are grown in volcanic soil which is nutrient rich as opposed to where we live in Australia. I've heard that it's best to cook your nightshades as opposed to raw. As with starches, I've started to cook in advance, refrigerate and reheat when needed. This then keeps your glucose levels low.

I was sad to discover that the constant joint pain I suffered for years disappeared completely when I eliminated nightshades. Now, even a tablespoon of 1000 Island dressing sets off the inflammation. Tomatoes are my favorite food--it's a terrible loss!

Same here, recently realized it's the nightshades after years of thinking it was gluten, dairy and various other things. Turns out I was always confounding my results by eating things with tomato, potato, hot sauce, etc. Turns out eliminating these seems to make my psoriatic arthritis completely calm down, and even trace amounts of something like paprika in a seasoning starts to trigger me within 24 hours... at least now I know

Having had to cut the nightshade group out due to inflammation, a leaky gut, and blood results highlighting immune response, after a 12 month break the three times I tried one portion of potatoes, a month apart each, immediately gave me horrendous arthritic hand pain for 10 days at a time. I will not be going back to any of the food group. My body wide pain and stiffness is at least 80% reduced by altering my diet to exclude the foods that showed in my immune tests. You can easily get Butyrate supplements for the gut and I do that instead. I love sweet potatoes and have them if I want a potato. I do miss aubergines though. Totally believe arthritis is absolutely linked to dietary caused inflammation - but that can be an individual diet different to each other. It’s frustrating that mainstream medicine is still resistant to accepting we are individuals who can be adversely affected by “healthy” foods - Mediterranean diet or not. One size fits all does not work - this comes up time and time again still across the board - when will they learn!

I've been off nightshades for about 17 years now. Like you, accidental ingestion results in severe hand pain. I've never found an adequate substitute for tomatoes, but the rest are now easily lived without. My problem is with the hidden stuff - potato starch seems to be in everything, or dusted onto it to reduce eg grated cheese sticking together. I've seen it on ingredients lists for jelly babies - nothing can be assumed to be free from the stuff. I had a stretch of a couple of months when the pain was bad but I couldn't find the source of it, only to discover that goji berries are nightshades too, and they were in my fruit mix snack bag. The arthritis is still there, my hands are slowly getting more misshapen, but at least they don't usually hurt!

Triple cooked chips are cooled during the cooking process so you can indulge quite happily without worrying about blood glucose spikes. Another dish that isn't eaten more is sauté potatoes which are boiled, cooled in the fridge overnight and then lightly fried. These are delicious and an alternative to chips. If you cook more potatoes than you need put them in a container or bowl in the fridge overnight, slice and fry in a little olive oil and butter, yum

I have a highly active autoimmune disease (MS) and serum markers of high inflammation, and I'm normally very skeptical of dietary advice regarding AI disease, but I learned through a DNA test that I have a rare variant of the BChE gene which is implicated in breaking down the alkaloids in nightshade. Though I agree nighshades seem to be fine for most people, this mutation is really making me consider trying an elimination diet despite my skepticism... and my love of nightshades :(

Do what works for you and makes you feel good. Physiology is not a one size fits all situation, which I wish they would have emphasized here more, though they did give it an ever so brief mention. There are definitely a significant amount of people that nightshades can affect in varying degrees (again not one size). This can include anyone sensitive to tyramine or tyrosine. Those w autoimmune dzs, afib and who take MAOs all can have serious issues from not carefully considering how diet affects them. I notice in afib forums alot that those who don’t consider their diets are going in for repeated cardioversions and even repeated ablations. I find this video a bit misleading or that maybe this topic was a bit beyond the scope of those consulted.

Dr Steven Gundry bases a whole majority of his diet recommendations on the avoidance of this class of proteins, which, he teaches, are standard proteins in nightshade plants. In peppers and tomatoes they are in the seeds and skin. Hence, so he claims, this is why tomato puree and passata have no seeds and skin. Gundry is full of nonsense, to put it bluntly. He is a total outlier with his strange opinions on lectins. The vast majority of nutritional scientists (which is is not BTW, just a medic) do not agree, and nor does the evidence. Gundry does very well out of trying to make lectin the new gluten. Population studies on people eating lots of high-lectin foods show they do better than the usual Western diet. The most studied diet in history: the Mediterranean Diet is high in lectin-containing foods and has amongst the best health outcomes of any diet we know of. Why choose to believe this non-scientist who profits from pushing this fringe belief and ignore the scientific consensus, which is: you just don't need to worry about lectins in a healthy diet?

Night shade is used in lots of cardi tonics in very small doses it will open up your vascular system and help push other medication‘s along so they put it in a lot of cardio tonics is in micrograms and you have to know exactly what you’re doing to use it but nightshade is a medicine not a poison even the nightshade buries that you took and had to have pumped from your stomach ifthey had been prepared properly and only small amount given to someone with heart problems. It would be an amazing beneficial thing for them.

Perhaps you can't tell the difference between a white and a sweet potato? There's 60,000 edible plants. Your suggestion makes Zero sense. Especially when there's no research and dubious claims to support it. Not to mention, carnivore cause immense pain and suffering to the animals, never mind the people who fail on it and the prognosis of increased likelihood of early death to myself. Deadly Nightshade is not very rare in the UK, though it may be uncommon. I often find it in churchyards, field edges, and occasionally in a scrub parts of a garden. It is very distinctive in terms of flower, berry, and leaf shape. But agree that the berries are quite large - you'd need a very big mouth to stuff a handful in! More likely to be bittersweet, or woody nightshade - much smaller red/black berries.

Turns out half of that pain was being caused by nightshades...and I was a smoker so that was making it worse. I can handle a touch of chilly or paprika occasionally but otherwise I avoid them like the plague. If I accidentally eat some, I know about it.

That's the thing tho, "reportedly". The magnitude of inflamation, or the other way around, ORAC value, heavily depends on the subjects condition and/or what theyre missing in their System, therefor these anecdotal reports can be heavily skewed. An apple has a higher ORAC value than an orange, but someone with a deficiency precisely for vitamin C, might benefit more, and get a higher ORAC value in their blood, when eating the orange instead. It's the same case for many antioxidants, studies show that most ppl barely convert any beta-carotene into vitamin A, since their body already uses up all the antioxidants in form of beta-carotene. Getting back to nightshades, studies show no harm, but ofc if an individual receives harm, they should not be blind to their own eyes, and do what's best for them. Tomato sauce/puree/passata from straight tomatoes is very high in bioavailable lycopenes, so i eat it occasionally, i don't see the point in raw tomatoes however, as their lycopenes are barely bioavailable.

If I understand it correctly, it's not that fresh tomatoes are inherently lower in nutrients than cooked tomatoes; it's that when cooked, the volume is reduced so much that when we eat a "serving" of tomato sauce or paste, we may be eating the equivalent of numerous tomato fruits. Fresh tomatoes can be rich in nutrients, if consuming a lot of them. But I've heard enough anecdotes of people having a sensitivity to nightshades; consuming enough tomatoes to have a "healthy" impact might be decidedly unhealthy, for some sensitive people.

Has anyone done studies where people are given the chemicals that are supposed to cause problems in double blind trials.? Im sure beans never affected me before I heard they were supposed to cause bloating. One pain killer I needed before retirement to get through a work day only started to cause constipation afyer my gp warned me that they did. I have read that the requirement for gps to disclose possible side effects has resulted in a higher incidence of these.

I find this video a bit misleading or feel that maybe this topic was a bit beyond the scope of those consulted. Science and medical professions don’t always intersect adequately enough, either because studies were too narrow or too focused and limiting in group or species included.

Histamine is the issue and my own personal nightmare I have EDS and MCAD .... I cant eat aubergine and or potatoes and some peppers but not others ... I can eat toms when cooked easily but sometimes react to raw tomato but histamine levels are the real issue as is the ability to digest them depending on the raw versus cooked status .. Cutting raw potato or a tomato can result in a rash and hives.... But cooked not...The gut may be able to absorb many foods better if cooked as it changes the ability to imbibe them. Saying that, if you offer me tomato soup .....Im going to be sick.....Can i please say that i am a carer for an EDS T1D. I would LOVE to share what happens on the CGM. Oh boy. I call it the "revenge of the potato" 6 HOURS LATER I WILL BE AWAKE AT 3 AM BRINGING DOWN A BG OF 14-19.... Three hours after the BG will drop into hypo as the insulin beats the potato causing a near death experience each time. Thats why you double bolus as every t1d knows potatoes are the WORST. I cannot emphasis enough the power of a visual representation on a CGM of the 6 hour leaky gut horror spike. I wish i could speak to the Zoe team directly.
