Why are looted Ethiopian treasures still in Britain? | The Stream

Ойын-сауық

Ethiopia's government is calling for the return of cultural artefacts plundered 150 years ago by British military forces. The relics, some of which are currently on display at London's Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A), were stolen in 1868 after the Battle of Maqdala, in which British troops raided the fortress of Abyssinian Emperor Tewodros II to release a group of imprisoned missionaries.
Upon the defeat of his army, Tewodros killed himself and British forces loaded elephants and mules with their loot. They also spirited away Prince Alemayehu, the emperor's seven-year-old son.
The dispute over the pieces on display at the V&A has once again cast a spotlight on debate over whether the spoils of war should remain in Western museums, or be returned to the people and lands from which they were taken.
Ethiopia has previously requested that several British institutions give back hundreds of manuscripts and artefacts - and that the remains of Prince Alemayehu are returned.
V&A Director Tristram Hunt has proposed lending items in the museum's collection to Ethiopian institutions as part of a "long-term loan" partnership.
Several Ethiopian officials, however, have balked at the suggestion.
“It is clearly known where these treasures came from and whom they belong to", said Ethiopian National Museum Director Ephrem Amare. "Ethiopia’s demand has always been the restoration of those illegally looted treasures. Not to borrow them.”
So, should looted historical artefacts remain in Britain's museums, or should they be returned to Ethiopia?

I stand with the people of Ethiopia 🇪🇹 all of the artifacts should be returned back immediately to Ethiopia. The fact that the British Museum, Parliament, and British people would tell the Ethiopian people that they can not have their own history/culture back that they STOLE from them is RIDICULOUS! It is downright insulting to the Ethiopian people that they would or should have to pay A loan on their own history/culture to Britain that they STOLE from them, they DO NOT have to pay Britain or the BRITs back for ANYTHING that RIGHTFULLY belongs to the country of Ethiopia and her people. Now people can say all day long LOOTED all they want to but the TRUTH is these artifacts were TARGETED and STOLEN out of Ethiopia. The Europeans, from everything I have read targeted select countries on the continent of Africa only because of the wealth of the country in natural resources because England was BANKRUPT due to their Royals greed! No country has the RIGHT to tell another country what they or can not do with their own history and truth be told they are still to this day making money off of these beautiful Ethiopian artifacts and they don’t want to give that up because they don’t want the country of Ethiopia or her people to come up in their station as a country or people because people will no longer go to Britain but they will start coming to Ethiopia, and to the Ethiopian Museum to view their history. I’m going to stop here because I could make this very long but the bottom line is this👉 The Europeans have stolen a history that does not belong to them and if they claim to be such upstanding people would morals then they need to live by that and return back to Ethiopia the Artifacts of their rightful history and I say this as an America citizen.

All that matters to me is that the history is preserved and that people have a way to access it (hopefully through the internet as well), I would be fine with the items returned as long as Ethiopian is stable enough to guarantee the safety of the treasures. Also you should keep in mind that many evil conquers of history have destroyed the cultures of the lands they take over, burning libraries, destroying temples, and tearing down palaces. So I think it's wise to not be so negative towards the British government who at least recognized the value of these priceless items and ensured their safe keeping. Please do not fall victim to hate, especially towards people who harbor no ill will towards you.

That's not true, I can recommend credible sources for you to read on the subject, such as "Ethiopia" by Jean Doresse (Director of archaeology during HIM). The Brits did not even have the intent to colonize Ethiopia. He was in good terms with the Queen of England until the UK became allies with Ethiopia's enemy and did not respond to his letter. He then imprisoned the Brits who were there feeling that she disrespected him. Napier's British force just came to free the Brits he had imprisoned and to specifically destroy him. When they arrived at Meqdela he sent his army away and committed suicide not wanting to start a war and cause bloodshed. The Brits also upon seeing him dead, just looted the treasuries at the castle, destroyed some things, gave 500,000 pounds to the latter emperor Yohannes IV who had betrayed him by helping them on their way, and left at once. No battle, no defeat, no intent to colonize.

Why did they have missionaries in Ethiopian soil, knowing they would be captured the premise of the war is suspicious. If their plan was to loot Ethiopia on the premise of a fake war then this should be discussed. The British spent a lot of money and tens of thousands of men in a meaningless war. The question should be why did the Brits invade Ethiopia in the late 1800s @ the height of their rein & not colonised the country like all the others??

@Mas Gonderawi Conservative mainstream Oxford Encyclopedia of Ancient Egypt shows ancient Egypt derived from an African cultural sub-stratum. "The evidence also points to linkages to other northeast African peoples, not coincidentally approximating the modern range of languages closely related to Egyptian in the Afro-Asiatic group. These linguistic similarities place ancient Egyptian in a close relationship with languages spoken today as far west as Chad, and as far south as Somalia. Archaeological evidence also strongly supports an African origin. A widespread northeastern African cultural assemblage, including distinctive multiple barbed harpoons and pottery decorated with dotted wavy line patterns, appears during the early Neolithic (also known as the Aqualithic, a reference to the mild climate of the Sahara at this time). Saharan and Sudanese rock art from this time resemble early Egyptian iconography. Strong connections between Nubia (SUDANESE) and Egyptian material culture continue in later Neolithic Badarian culture of Upper Egypt. Similarities including black-topped wares, vessels with characteristic ripple-burnished surfaces, a special tulip-shaped vessel with incised and white-filled decoration, palettes, and harpoons... Other ancient Egyptian practices show strong similarities to modern African cultures including divine kingship, the use of headrests, body art, circumcision, and male coming-of-age rituals, all suggesting an African substratum or foundation for Egyptian civilization.." --Source: Donald Redford (2001) the Oxford Encyclopedia of Ancient Egypt, Volume 3. I am from Ethiopia, and live in Germany. When I want to go to Museum to see Ethiopian History or Culture I go to Ethiopia not to London. I'm a shamed to know this all, for many Years that any Ethiopian Government didn't get back those back Home where they belong, and show for all of us our History. We should see it we should Learn more our Own backgrounds, i use to ask all the Time, where is that all gone. We schould have more Museum than others about our King, Queen, e. t. c.... So Please bring it back all at Home!

Time doesn't erase the crime. They must be returned and with compensation.
