Rare Bites: Ethiopian Magic Scrolls

Rare Bites is a series of informal and entertaining 30 minute lunchtime talks showcasing items from Rare Books & Special Collections at the University of Sydney Library. Associate Professor Jay Johnston is an interdisciplinary scholar in the School of Literature, Art and Media, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. She discusses two Ethiopic Coptic Christian magic scrolls and the remarkable images they contain, exploring who may have created them and their context of use. Could these objects have played a role in personal health, relationships and/or protection?

There r uncountable treasures and books stolen from Ethiopia, but none of them, even combined, could be as valuable as this book! Ethiopian monks could read and understand this in a second, and yet forget the monks even an Ethiopian scientist isn't in the association of the researchers and decoders of this book. I wish to steel it back one day.

You are right as Ethiopians we focus on Italy a lot but England has done so much damage to us as a nation also. One day it will return to us to the real owner but right now it is in the hands of thieves. It was hard to see her as a genuine researcher even though she didn't personally steal it, but only Ethiopian Orthodox monks can fully understand this she or any of us part of this materialistic modern world can not fully get a good grasp of this.

Ethiopian Christianity is older than Egyptian Coptic Christianity. The Ethiopians adopted Coptic Christianity later on. Ethiopia is the first Christian nation before the Coptics and the Europeans. Ethiopia has the oldest Bible, which is unedited and includes the book of Enoch, which the King James Version does not include.

I think the presentation didn't clearly outlined that those people practicing what the presenter called black magic doesn't involve calling and initiating any arch angles; it confuses the orthodox followers and those seeking to know about the religion. There are individuals known as "Debtera" who failed their mission to serve the church and the people, and engaged in a heresy. They perform black Magic( Digemt፣ metet - amharic) and what the presenter had explained related to romantic issues is called (Mestefakir- amharic). But none of them use arch angles names, instead call for demonic names (bodies) to get initiated and join them. The Ethiopian orthodox church can't be manifested with such witchcraft like activities at all. If you want to know what truly exists inside, come to the church find out. By the way the word "Debtera" by it self had a meaning to show "Fathers with good theological knowledge and manners in the church; but now it is changed in to captioning religious fathers with demeaning activities.

Tewahedo is a Ge'ez word meaning "united as one". This word refers to the Oriental Orthodox belief in the one perfectly unified nature of Christ; i.e., a complete union of the divine and human natures into one nature is self-evident in order to accomplish the divine salvation of humankind, as opposed to the "two natures of Christ" belief commonly held by the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox, Anglican, Lutheran and most Protestant churches.

This comment is not so much directed to the mostly innocent and naive researchers like this woman who is just trying to look at something she doesn't know very well. But it is directed to those nefarious people who have underhandedly procured (and in many cases STOLEN) these documents of our land and holy Church for use in their own inverted and outwardly unspoken of spiritual operations: THE DAY IS COMING WHEN EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THESE ITEMS WILL BE RETURNED TO THE PLACE WHERE YOUR ELITES STOLE THEM FROM. EVERY SINGLE PAGE. MARK MY WORDS. WE CANNOT DO ANYTHING TO YOU, WE ARE SPIRITUAL PEOPLE WHO LOVE PEACE & DO NOT BELIEVE IN STEALING FROM THE HANDS OF OTHER PEOPLE. BUT ON THE DAY WHEN THE MOST HIGH ACTS YOU WILL NOT KNOW WHAT HAS HIT YOU. IT IS VERY IRONIC THAT IF WE PUT A SINGLE FOOT WRONG IN LIFE YOU WILL BE VERY QUICK TO INCRIMINATE US & CHARGE US OR FINE US EVERY PENNY (PLUS INTEREST) SOMETIMES UNTIL WE ARE DESTITUTE... MEANWHILE YOU SIT ON THE TREASURES AND SPIRITUAL HERITAGE OF ENTIRE NATIONS, USING THEIR SACRED MATERIALS AND ITEMS FOR YOUR WHIMSICAL & INTELLECTUAL AMUSEMENT.

long time ago the jewish studied to become scribe debtera, it was then transferred to christian & islam. One most known debtera was King Solomon. Priests who perform exorcism learn debtera books and call them all by their names, the possessed comes out screaming, the debtera can do bad with black magic to ruin people's life, or as white magic to help release all demons. Check Memhir Girma videos, how he is so learned and calls them by name all diablos they answer to the call.

This all wrong and sinful a priest should teach us that their is only way to salvation and that is through repentance believing in Christ praying and going to churches more holy communions and spreading the good news to everyone. That’s all what’s needed and necessary this is total heresy and sin only through Christ is their salvation.

As colonism has it, in your benefit the profits end up in your hands and rarely ours. However, a lot of brain dead Ethiopians in this era, currently ran by a braindead PM, it would honestly be a tragedy to fall pity to these pleas at such a mad weathered Ethiopia rn. Someone might burn it, or attempt to facilitate it nefariously. It's in safe hands in Australia rn.

In fact, compared to their current government, it may be better fit in my hands. It'll be great care where only the utmost accurate translation is gladly collected, then provided with zero bad actors or revisionist content involved.

It is part of our heritage and culture and i am sure if we had the power to ask our ancestors who wrote it whether they prefer to give it to some foreigner or their descendents it is perfectly reasonable to assume they would give it to us and it also seems to me you dont have the ability to translate the text even the woman in the video doesn't understand it meanwhile there are people here who speak the language it was written in.

#1 wrong dating on the back ground information... Do you know when Ethiopian orthodox church started as religion? Debteras are not the creators of Ethiopian magic instead they are the practitioners and translator of the abstract meaning of the magic books. Also once priests start practicing magic they will be labeled as debtera. Some of them you read about in relation to religious texts do not resonated to the whatness Ethiopian magic. Specifically your reference to Egypt is misappropriation, you would not need to talk about as Ethiopian. Even if you credit it to more closely and respectfully it's Amhara's people civilization.

I'm guessing the Ethiopian orthodox Christian faith moved into that part of the world coming from Egypt the orthodox faith was massive in North Africa before the Muslim conquest there were Greek orthodox churches and monasteries deep into upper and lower Egypt philie template was the last place where the Egyptian religion and Christianity were practiced during the Roman period. Although Ethiopia trace's back it's heritage back to king Solomon although that's very hard to prove. There's many texts that haven't been discovered altered knowing the book of Enoch was found in the 1700s I'm wondering if they are Greek orthodox basis or Syrian because there were many Syrian orthodox priests that went to Ethiopia to teach the Bible and the gospels it would be interesting where the Ethiopias copyied there books from Greek orthodox monks or Syriac orthodox monks.

Magic is an attempt to circumvent God in the acquisition of knowledge or power.so what you are talking about is wrong this scroll written by our holy father this not demonic source you keep saying magic Give it to the owner you can’t explain what you don’t know about our holy father wrote this book because this is the works that God did through our holy father .called miracles scrolls Give it to the owner dear

Don’t say all orthodoxy practices such things don’t make it as if all do it. Infact those who does such acts isn’t orthodox what does the word orthodox means is to be same as old orthodox unchanging doing what the apostles did and taught period nothing more or less. This are magic did you say any words in the Bible saying practice magics even to help people? No it’s against god infact it won’t help but destroy gods message.
