When I was looking for my first 4WD I knew I wanted something reliable amazing off-road, upon my searching everyone seemed to really like the Toyota land cruiser, it checked both of those boxes ULTRA reliable and AMAZING off-road
Every time I would search for them I could not seem to find one in my budget. Oh and not to mention they all had a ton of miles, 250k+ and I kept thinking, these people are insane why would they ask so much for a vehicle that is almost 30 years old?
But sure enough the next week the post was gone and the land cruiser was sold.
So in this video I'm going to go over 3 key factors that are causing the value of land cruisers to go up.
Im also going to talk about a land cruiser that recently sold for 136k Dollars
Im going to tell you how I was able to get a land cruiser for cheap and how you can do it too
The reason these Land Cruisers are so expensive are due to 3 things.
1. World Wide Reputation.
The Land Cruiser is the pinnacle of the off road and has dominated the off road market.
Toyota Over-engineered the land cruiser and they built it to last many many decades with just basic maint.
It's reputation spans across the world Africa, Australia, Asia, South America.
80 Series
The Engines, Designed to be rebuilt up to 3x
The Axles, Super durable and amazing, fit 33s without a lift
The Off Road Capability, full time 4wd with center locking diff
Because of this people rarely sell their land cruisers and they keep them for many many years. If they ever do get rid of them they just buy another land cruiser.
2. The classic design and timeless look of the land cruiser, beautiful vehicle with great looks that has just improved over time.
The land cruiser looks great from the 40 series to the 60 series
By doing this it brings up the value.
3.
The law of Supply and Demand says that:
If demand increases for a product and supply remains unchanged, a shortage occurs, leading to a higher price.
That is why we saw this land cruiser that is 27 years old sell for 136,000 Dollars at auction.
For that amount of money you could have bought a 2021 Land Cruiser and a 4Runner and still had 15k left over for Mods.
Supply and Demand:
Everyone loves the Land Cruiser, and once you get your hands on you rarely let it go, everyone that I know who used to own one but sold it always talks bout how they regret selling theirs.
People love land cruisers because they are super reliable and very comfortable.
Oh and not to mention you can take these things anywhere off-road.
Recap:
Land Cruisers are expensive because of their reputation that they have built for decades.
Classic look and design makes them even more desirable
Lastly Supply and Demand.
How to get one for cheap, find one that needs some work and be willing to do it yourself.

My mother daily drives a '94 FZJ80 that currently has around 160k miles. My uncle, who was the first owner, gave his Land Cruiser to my father for free after he wrecked it when he hit a light pole during a heavy rainstorm in '99. My father completely fixed it in the autoshop he owned at the time and it's still running strong to this day. My mother only drives 20 miles in total each day, 5 days a week. It has been on a couple of long roadtrips before, but we prefer to take something else that is more fuel efficient unless we have more than 4 passengers. It has never been on any actual offroad trail before, we live in California, and it's mostly been driven by a middle-aged woman, so it's still in pretty good condition. And no, we will never sell it. I am a very sentimental person, so I will try to keep it in my family for as long as I can- even after I'm gone.

I'm so happy I bought my 80 last summer while prices were lower. Granted I paid more than you (mine was under 200k) and needed much less work. I've begun my preventative maintenance now, replacing all hoses, and giving it a decent overhaul for my upcoming summer trips. I've decided to never sell mine too. Lucked out and found the two-tone color

1993 FZJ80 with 213 Kmiles. Just completed a 3000 mile road trip to New Mexico and back with no problems. How may vehicles can chew up and spit out the off-pavement stuff and still do a smooth and easy 80 mph on the freeway? At least once a month someone stops at my driveway and asks if I'll sell - I always say no. It's like an old pair of shoes; familiar, comfortable, and we've had a lot of adventures together. I'm not going to tell you how little I paid for it when I bought it eight years ago - it will just piss you off!

As requested --- I am leaving some background on my landcruiser in your comments section. FJ80 - 1993 Green with Brown 36,300 miles no lockers, no leather , no wood. It is in showroom condition and still has the new car smell. I am the second owner. It has been stored in a heated garage for the last 16 years and I recently "reactivated it"...... I have watched several of your videos - thanks for making them I plan to sell it in november or before I head back to florida for the winter.

My 94 FZJ80 just clocked 570,000 km on a trip pulling our 2.4 ton dual axle caravan, she wanders and shakes as all the bushings are worn and I'm working my way through all that stuff bit by bit, she gets the job done, works her bum off doing it without fail, good old 1fz-fe has a big heart, dual fuel petrol and LPG, as my wife says "she's a beast " that's why they're going up in value....actually priceless to me, cheers from Australia.

Nothing touches my Land Cruiser 80 for quality, reliability and functionality. My triple-locked Cruiser looks almost new and is rattle-free. I love her!! Get them while you can, cause they are going to keep climbing in price, regardless of this temporary automotive bubble that we are in. Excellent videos! Cheers!!

First, glad I stumbled across your channel! I have a ‘91’ with approx…225k+…picked her up from a friend for $1700. Went into this adventure, knowing I will have to spend time and resources. Continue to learn its not a Ford or Chevy when it comes to replace/repair ‘stuff’! lol 😂 Such as the water pump!….OMG!!! that was an adventure in its self. I actually did not know what I had when I purchased her. Also picked up a ‘93’ ‘doner’ cruiser for parts for $150 that the person who had it was just going to scrapped….the purchase has already paid for itself! Now my current lesson in life involving my ‘91’ is the breaks systems….again….not a ford or chevy….lol 😆 Anyways….thank you for these videos….has hugely helped me…by at least giving me a starting point!

Thank goodness I got mine at invoice last August before the announcement and this craziness started. I have seen many new ones asking price over $100,000 especially in California and Colorado. This will continue to go up as you say in your video and completely agree but I would add that the 200 series will go down as the most sought after Land Cruiser ever made.

What I love about my Land Cruiser is that the condition (specially on the dash, Sears, plastic cover etc) are really good. I have a 1996 Land Cruiser! It has 494,000 miles. Back in June the motor started to make a ton of noise so I had it rebuilt. It took them five months but I have it back and it's going through it's break in period. I've take it camping way out in the desert & skiing and it's running beautifully. I was really concerned about spending the money for the rebuild but now that I've seen what people are paying for these vehicles I feel like I made a good decision. Thanks for the information!

Would take a small fortune for me to consider selling it. I think 94 is the year to have because it’s the last year of the big transmission last year without airbags and first year for antilock brakes. A good combination for an older ride.

In the time I’ve had it I’ve put about 4,000 US in it( major repairs) another 800 in tires but that’s it! Oh I only paid 3, 800 cash for it! It came with an really nice snowboard rack. Hopefully I’ll get it repainted if I can find a shop I trust. I’ll drive it for life. Or would sell it only for a ridiculous price, but since I live in Colorado I most likely keep it forever.

The 80 series LandCruisers are my favorite, because of their capabilities and range off-road. These ToYodas I wouldn't mind having when I'm in a place to afford them.

I have a 1996, same color as you. Bought it for $1,600 from an older guy 3 years with 281K miles now. I bought it cheap but some body rust that I have to fix and some tune up. I do have a 2002 TLC too but I like the 80 series look.

I own a 97 triple locked with 214k. I bought it for 5k in 2014 with 145k before the demand went berzerk. I installed an OME 3" lift, and larger tires. Other than that just normal maintenance. I have owned a 92 LC, 96 LX450 triple locked, 02 LX470, and now the 97' 80. My wife drives a 06 LX470 with only 119k on the ticker. Best vehicles I have ever owned. Which is my fav? 97 fzj80 hands down, makes my wife jealous....but the most practical choice is the 06 LX....it tows, it hauls kids & gear in comfort, V8 power....it just does everything in style. Only downside to a LC is that they are thirsty....and a bad battery/alternator will drop an LC to its knees.

I've replaced a wheel bearing, bushings, belts, radiator, hoses, u-joint, seat gears. The engine still runs amazing as well as the transmission. Anything metal on the vehicle is well overbuilt and doesn't have many issues (I don't live where they salt roads), but rubber and plastic can only last so long.

The high price is because the market. They are sold as working barebone vehivles in dozen other markets. Good video, you are right. They are overbuild because they are vehicles for work and extreme transportation in remote places. I am from Venezuela where we had eveb models only made for Venezuela. In a small town by the north end of the andes mountain, land cruiser was a must because of the daily driving in such tough conditions. Jeeps would be considered a venture vehicle. Landcruisers are a transportation must-have.

1997 w/ 178,000 miles purchased in 2016, 3rd owner, 42 service record entrees, 3x lock, emerald green w/ oak interior. Paid $10,000 for it which I thought was a bit high. First owner put around 120,000 miles on during his 17 years of ownership. Second owner drove over 25,000 miles a year for 2 years, all oil changes documented on Carfax and records found in the glove box. I thought it had a bad head gasket as it drank a lot of coolant on my maiden trip after buying. Now I think it's just bad hoses as i noted coolant on the shop floor. Work overseas all the time, she's gonna be my primary retirement project in 18 months. Hope I live long enough to enjoy the NorthWest, mainly Idaho.

2021 Land Cruiser, brought in October 2021 for $99999 which people think is crazy. Used with 11k. Dealership demo vehicle. I originally brought it to start my Land Cruiser channel but now that the value drastically increased. On the fence on just holding. Prices are like 120-130k at the moment . Would not be surprised if it hits 150k. Considering no more Land Cruiser in the states.

My family had those 80 series, im not sure what year was it because my dad owns it since i was born on 1995. This SUV really brought my childhood memories of interstate travelling. So far in my life, 26 yrs old, i have never saw a car that i knew, that uses 2 battery packs except this. One of the most impressive thing is, u guys here as the owner or former co-owner like me, how a diesel engine can crank very fast?!! Literally 1 second? Although, the engine was 1HD 24 valve turbo. However, that car was involved in an accident. It was toppled over, upside down. My dad tried to fix it, replace the whole body (thanks to ladder frame). Not as identical but most of it looks the same, maybe older version of body i suppose. But the problem arises on its engine after that accident. One after one problem shows up. Eventually my dad giving it up and sell it few years ago due to my dad’s business closure and unable to spend so much money to revive an LC80. Last time i checked before it was sold, the mileage was 550k Kilometers.

Have a 2011 LX570 w134k. I'm in NC but got it out of TX about a year ago. Loving it! Getting ready to do some mods. Question: Working with a company for my first package to put 17' wheels, 34" tires (thinking Toyo ATs)...they said they could do with adjusting the AHC only giving approx 1.5" lift and the AHC would still work. Has anyone done and AHC height on a 200 series LX? Is this ok or could it cause other problems? They advised thats what was done on the LX 201 concept as well but I'm not fully comfortable yet is knowing that that would be a good durable option for lift. Albeit it is a cost effective option (no parts needed...but about $500 labor. Anyone have advice or experience here?
