The Best Toyota Land Cruiser You've Never Heard Of: The J78 Prado

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This is the Best Toyota Land Cruiser You've Never Heard Of: The Land Cruiser J78 Prado. Specifically, this is the Land Cruiser KZJ78W Prado. When the 70-series Land Cruiser was introduced, Toyota split the 70-series into the "heavy duty" and "light duty" versions of the truck. The Prado (also known as the Bundera or Land Cruiser II) embodies the "light duty" ethos with a blend of off-road capability, comfort, and a more civilian-friendly design, making it a unique entry in the Land Cruiser lineage. This 1995 KZJ78W model showcases the classic rugged lines and robust build quality that Toyota is renowned for, alongside features and amenities that were quite advanced for its time.
James Reeves gives you a personal tour of his Prado, along with Japanese car expert, Aaron Ross of Bulldog Auto Japan, and they explain why the Toyota Land Cruiser J78 Prado, especially the KZJ78W model, stands as a testament to Toyota's engineering excellence and foresight into the SUV market's evolution that lives up to the revered Land Cruiser heritage.

We had two 2004 Land Cruiser diesels with manual transmissions issued to our teams while I was there 2005-2007. Those things were bullet proof, and the A/C was nice. I didn't think much of it at the time, but it would be nice owning that Land Cruiser diesel today.

As an owner of a KZJ71G-PET myself, I can tell you that the KZJ78 is in absolutely impeccable condition. I didn't skip any part of the video, and believe me when I say I know this car inside and out, as I've had to rebuild mine almost completely. You have every OEM part, sticker, and every little part of the interior looks great, even those that tend to break easily, which most would just let pass if they were missing or broken. I loved your video. Finding someone who appreciates the exact same things about this car is an absolute gem. I really hope you make a series about it or feature it regularly in your videos. Well-deserved like and subscribe.

You can import 70's from Australia, they have a diesel manual that's perfect and has zero infotainment or bullshit. Austalian 70 series quite literally hasn't change since they came out in 83. You can thank the mining industry there for that, pricy though since not many outside of the mining corps still buy them

That's the beauty. They don't have to. They did, so you can still get them for a fraction of the price of a new car. With all of the money you save, you can drop a motor in when the time comes and save that much more by driving it forever.

Hi James, I've had a KZJ78 for around 6 months here in New Zealand. Love it. A few worthwhile things to do to get better power from the 1KZ is: Better dump pipe (Downpipe) from the Turbo and a 3 inch exhaust, it improves the power greatly and helps keep temperatures lower in the engine. Next for me will be a Front Mount Intercooler, these two mods add around 30 to 50 HP, without any tuning. As soon as I drove the truck after the 3 inch exhaust was fitted, I could tell the difference. Much more power and better high speed cruising. There's a company here in New Zealand that makes the custom Dump pipes - KRAE 4x4 - they ship internationally. Enjoy.

You should talk to Skid Factory or something, I guarantee you could turn up the boost on that a little and it would still be dead reliable. It might even be better for it because you won't have to be going foot to the floor all the time just to keep up with traffic. If you can cut your acceleration times that means you're back to lighter throttle cruising sooner. Skid Factory can tell you what would be a safe level to go too and what you need. Aussies know their stuff.

I love this take on "The Best Land Cruiser" and why it's more about what's the best Land Cruiser for you. I have a 2006 100 series Land Cruiser that's halfway build and for me it's the perfect Land Cruiser. It can breeze through 1000 mile road trips getting to cool places, then do days to weeks off-road pounding on rocks and dirt trails, easy to camp and live out of, and even though I've put a ton of money into it. It's still cheaper than a 200 which makes me not hate myself for every scratch that gets put on it, and for a lot of what I'm actually driving most of the time, it's way more comfortable, quieter, roomier for my sleeping platform and much more powerful than an 80. I love pretty much every cruiser for what it's the best at, and there is a Cruiser for most people depending on your use and build. Pick what works for you and your budget and join the cult. It's by far the best car community I've ever been a part of.
