If you are Ireland, a traveler has a rather different meaning 😂 but one we become Master Masons we are free to well ‘travel’ and yes, I agree with number 3.

In French Free Macon means Free House, which is another name for a Pub/ Public House. A Free House would've been able to house out of town craftsman working on building in their area. This is what you can still see in some places when workmen stay in a Bed and Breakfast while they're building or working on a project or business seminars, etc .. That's my two cents

Depends on that Masons individual faith. As we have said MANY times masonry is NOT a religion. So a Christian Freemason likely does not believe in reincarnation but a Hindu or Buddhist Mason may. It’s really not a religion itself.

@@didymusIsrael Something else for a believer to consider in the Christian context: If God knew you before you were born, and if you have a hope of eternal life, your spirit would have to be an eternal ray of God. Your body is temporary, and your spirit would not need reincarnation as it is eternal. Just my personal view and I hope it helps.

Many agree with you. Art de Hoyos and I spoke about it this morning. He agrees with you; I just think that from a practical standpoint, the 3rd answer makes the most sense. Truth be told, we don't have a solid answer.

  • @OldBreedBR

Dear Brother When you say that Freemasons would be called "Travellers" because they are constantly traveling from West to East is a "romantic explanation," I kindly disagree with sincere respect. Rather than being "romantic," this is at the core of Freemasonry's esotericism. Think about it: Isn't Freemasonry always hiding lessons behind symbols and allegories? QED. RS - W.'.M.'. - AASR (Brazil) T.'.F.'.E.'.

  • @ScottishRiteMasons

You’re not alone in that thought. But I really lean toward the more practical reasoning. I also don’t think that operative masons “hid” their lessons. I think some of those esoteric ideas were applied after the 1600s when speculative masons started with esoteric thoughts. The concept of being travelers is much older and therefore in my opinion it comes from the operative traditions which are rooted in practical thought NOT esoteric philosophy. But we don’t really have a great answer for it as I said there’s no history to prove it one way or another so I would be happy to be wrong. I just lean towards practicality.

@@lastmanineurope8 I believe no other purpose than sharing knowledge and starting a productive and civil debate. But this current trend of Freemasonry towards practicality worries me. If you strip the Masonic teachings of their esotericism, what remains? What would Freemasonry have to offer to the world? Lessons about brotherly love, good character, and behavior can be found everywhere and anywhere, even in very materialistic traditions of thought. A Freemasonry without its robust and powerful esotericism is sterile and dull and would have no justifiable reason to exist.

@@OldBreedBR agreed. “Traveling east in search of light” is obviously used in our ritual as a metaphor for traveling spiritually in search of enlightenment. However, the metaphor was possibly inspired by the customs of ancient stone masonry, if we are to believe that the term journeyman had reference to traveling in order to progress in one’s craft.
