That was a very thorough explanation. I am an aerospace engineer for a US defense contractor and it is incredible how the R&D and labor costs drive the cost of our products: It takes smart people to develop, produce, and field top notch, reliable, and dependable products, and smart people are expensive.

And the taxpayer funds most if not all of what you work on. The question stands.

@@rickbar123 They fund the R & D but a lot of US defense stuff is sold internationally so what´s your point? Take US Fighter Jets, how many have been sold around the world? US Missiles? US Tanks? US Warships ect..

Hi there guys. Thank you for an amazing channel & very informative videos. I've been watching your videos for some time now and are always surprised at your knowledge of the products you sell. Keep up the stunning work.
For a similar reason that some 50mm camera lenses are less than £100, and some are well over £1000: it all boils down to optical quality and quality of construction. Because with optical instruments, when you pay a lot, you demand high performance. Cheap lenses and binoculars aren't too sharp, exhibit chromatic aberrations, distortion (barrel and/or pin cushion), glare/ reflection on external and internal elements which can either spoil a view or photograph (in the case of cheap camera lenses), potentially, and often have all or some of their elements made of plastic, which scratches easily and diffracts/ does not let light through like high quality optical grade glass. I use Swarovski ELs which use Schott high definition optical glass, field flatteners (to achieve edge to edge sharpness and clarity and also dial out field distortion). And I also know that, for Swarovski, everything they make is developed, designed, constructed, researched and quality tested in-house. Also, you get incredible colour accuracy and sharpness: so you can more likely discriminate a very well camouflaged bird or animal from its surroundings. All that comes down to careful R&D, design work, and thorough testing regimes, and some "genius" applied in their optical physics/ patents
I paid $125/each for several new pairs of Bushnell Legend M 8X42s on closeout. 130 meter view. They are are almost as good as my Nikon HGs. It's very close. You pay geometrically for alpha quality.
