Why Are Airlines Hiring So Many Pilots?

Airlines are on a hiring binge for pilots to combat the chaos at U.S. airports. Due to the pandemic, numerous pilots retired and no new pilots were trained. Now, some airlines are tripling the average salary of a pilot to boost applications. At Piedmont Airlines, they're churning out 40 new pilots every month. These pilots-in-training already logged 1,500 hours of flight time. However, they must go through five weeks of classroom instruction and 40 hours in a simulator.

I think they worded it pretty poorly. It said SOME airlines tripled the salary, while the average nationwide is still $93,000. I doubt pilots made $31,000 prior to the pandemic, they should’ve listed what that tripled salary is instead.

When we (the Taxpayers) bailed out the Airlines during the Pandemic instead of using that to keep their employees on the payroll they pushed many into early retirement and stopped classes as they told schools they won't be hiring. Why did they use that money for early retirement packages and stock buybacks when they were supposed to use it to keep the employees paid during the Pandemic while keeping pilots and other employees on hold.

It’s been my dream and passion for flying, but a lot of people don’t get into this profession because it’s soooo expensiveee for the training and everything. If airlines really made it easier with scholarships, contracts or anything, I’m sure the pilot shortage would of been relived a bit.

It’s not a requirement but it’s the fasts way to get 1500hrs CFI flight instructing .If I were to graduate from my flight school I would come out with 250-300hrs of flight time then I need to time build being a certified flight instructor would get me there 1500 hrs . Some flight schools, have restricted hrs ur doing another program besides going to flight school getting a degree in aviation or another field so ur good with 1000hrs of flight instructing or any other method of building flight time to then apply for regional airlines. And here too u go through training in that specific plane u will be operating . And I have to pass it all under the FAA regulations

I am sooooo jealous! I started flying on my own in early 90s but It got so expensive, I stopped. I loved the experience though. Am 55 now, a state prison nurse making about 150K/year and pension and a paid off house so doing fine, but I still fantasize about finding ways to make flying a career, but with retirement required at 65 for the majors, probably not worth the effort….
