With the release of HomePod, Apple threw their hat in the smart speaker ring after seeing companies like Amazon and Google experiences success in the market. But Apple decided to approach the smart speaker from a different angle, by making sound quality the product’s primary focus instead of its voice assistant. And this created some issues that is preventing the HomePod from competing on the same level as the Amazon Echo and Google Home. And despite being on sale for well over a year, HomePod hasn’t achieved the kind of success Apple was aiming for, capturing just 6% of the smart speaker market at the end of 2018. And in this video we’re going to explore the reasons why the HomePod is failing to live up to Apple’s expectations.
Thanks to RocketBody for sponsoring this video!

Plainapple287 there’s no comparison. Apple’s and oranges. Google mini is an ordinary tiny speaker. There’s some incredible tech inside the HomePod and you can hear it. Why are people forcing Apple to make an inferior speaker. There is jealousy that apple developed a product like the HomePod and of course there’s people who hate music or care nothing about it. You are clearly not the target audience for the HomePod.

Sound quality matters. Apple wasn’t setting out to make a cheap crappy speaker to compete with Google or Amazon. I think they screwed up by not allowing third party music providers on the device . Also they’ve had Siri since 2007 and did nothing innovative to improve the smart assistant allowing competitors to bypass them. Someone at Apple has not been paying attention. That said i am in love wth the superior sound for a speaker its size. It packs a lot of power and then some. Apple has never been about mediocre or average. If that’s what you want then go to another platform. Ordinary sound for ordinary people.

That skill is horrid. I have to relink my Apple account once a month minimum and as much as once a week on Alexa. I filled my home with Alexa's when they integrated with Apple Music and it's been a nightmare. I'm almost ready to just pay the extra 2 or 3 dollars a month for Amazon Music Unlimited (already have Prime). I've done reviews and emailed feedback. I do wish I hadn't put my faith in Apple and Amazon's abilities to work together.

like the features, setup was difficult for some of my devices (August Door lock, kzread.infoUgkxhB5YOMNj04GuoAosExygP4cH-dKeb4aB Bose speaker)... but all switches and outlets (5), thermostat, tankless water heater. Unfortunately all I can do is turn on/off Bose. It doesn't support volume or changing channels, but I believe that is due to the particular speaker I have.... Worth getting if you already have other devices to use it with... I don't sit around and ask Alexa questions much so that doesn't really matter to me....

Strong Fatman I think a lot of techies positioned the HomePod as an echo or google home assistant competitor. It’s not that kind of a product. It’s a music player. Superior audio quality is it’s strength. They should’ve improved Siri years ago before Amazon and Google came along and bypassed them. A Big mistake on apple’s part. Someone at Apple made some bad decisions in not doubling down on evolving Siri’s capabilities and making her smarter. They need to hire smart assistant specialist and sink some money into revamping Siri to match or even surpass Google io and amazon Alexa.

I’m not saying Apple are perfect or don’t make wrong decisions, but in this particular case many people still just aren’t getting the google and amazon smart speakers are nothing near the same quality as the Home Pod. If you want cheap buy a low quality echo or similar, if you can’t abide poor quality sound spend more money and buy something decent. You get what you pay for.

2 problems: 1: it's not the smartest speaker, and It's not the best sounding speaker for 350. very few people want both, and if you care oly about the smartness, you buy the echo or google home. if you want just a speaker, you get something non-smart. even if you do care about both, you could get a ghome max, or a and echo dot + external speaker combo, and get similar sound quality, at a similar price, with better smart features. 2: speakers last a long time. the will keep working for a long time, and they don't really become obsolete. I expect that sound quality wise, the homepod will age well. the problem is, there is no headphone jack, or bluetooth, or any other standardized way to connect with it. when apple ends support, it wil basically become a brick. that is a shame, because the sound quality could very well be on pr with the 300 dollar speakers of the next 10 years. oh well. I guess, if nothing else, when apple drops support, they will be super cheap on ebay, and I can buy them, and hack in some standard input.

The Dude With Alexa you say „Alexa play my music“ and it plays your spotify music With HomePod you have to find your iDevice, unlock it, find spotify, open it, go to your playlist, start in shuffle mode, tap the „connect a speaker“ icon, tap on „more devices (airplay)“, select your homepod and wait some seconds until it syncs, then you finally can listen to your music. This is just ridiculous for 350$ Apple speakers + iPhone.

It needs app extentions for developers. They need to be able to create useful features so that when someone adds an app to their iPhone, their apple account adds related functionality to the homepod (including other music services). As its a communal device and not a personal one, it also needs voice print identification so it can be more personal. It's got an iPhone chip so it should be capable.

amazon and google have released high quality speakers with home assistant and smart home integration. Amazon have also released products that can make older speakers become smart speakers. Amazon have also linked with companies like Sonos. The main issue with the HomePod is that it’s too limited...it’s a speaker with some smart features - HomeKit for apple has issues, Siri has issues, and there’s severe compatibility issues...you need an iPhone to set it up, it doesnt work with a lot of services etc. Essentially it is a wireless speaker for apple with some smart feature BUT arguably you can head to ikea and buy a wireless speaker for £99. It way over priced, heavily limited, and not very smart.
