Why Apple FINALLY Switched iPhone To USB-C

Ғылым және технология

Google started switching their phones to USB-C in 2015, with Samsung following suit in 2016. So why did it take Apple until 2023 to switch the iPhone to USB-C on the 15, 15 Plus, 15 Pro, and 15 Pro Max?

Thank you for not even humouring the idea that Apple had any other reasons to change out of lightning. The reasons they mentioned are real advantages, but they would have happily stuck with lightning if the EU had not told them to change.

Except it’s not true, they stuck with the port to not piss off their customers. And they promised to keep it for ten years. Time is finally up, the EU was just circumstantial. In fact, Apple raced to invent USB-C when the consortium and governments were seriously going to enforce everyone to adopt… micro USB. Thank goodness Apple responded quickly, and gifted their new port to the entire industry.

If they did it for those reasons they would have done years ago, when the standard was established and was just as good as lighting at that point already. Plus, Tim Cook himself said in an interview not long ago that they don’t approve of USB C for every phone just to meet a standard but that they would abide the law if it passed. Obviously Cook didn’t suddenly change his opinion, and Apple only mentioned the new port very briefly in their presentation. They clearly hate this.

It makes sense once you realize Apple took a huge public hit for forcing lightning onto everyone who had zero lightning cables in 2012, and felt motivated to fulfill their promise (stated on-stage aloud) for lightning to be their iPhone port for the next decade. Here we are ten years later, right on time. USB-C was actually invented by Apple engineers and was clearly planned from the outset to be the standard Mac port, then eventually on more mobile products.

The Lightning port on the device is just a hole, while the port on USB is a hole with a center "slab", which might be less robust. With how much pros rely on fast video transfer (which they’re literally promoting as a benefit with these phones) and all sorts of important shit pros and general users rely on, there is NO WAY they’d make the phone port-less, at least for the next 5-10 years. Plus, they’ll need to have a solution in place to remedy this, like when Apple removed the headphone jack, and they had AirPods available right then and there.

@@lonxyon3715 Depending on the context of your question, the answer varies. If you're referring to brand new models after the legislation takes effect, then yes, Apple won't be able to sell iPhones with Lightning ports in the EU. However, the resale of second-hand phones will remain unaffected by the port type. For Apple to continue selling the iPhone 14 in the EU, they would need to retrofit or redesign these models to incorporate a Type-C port. However, such a move seems improbable. Given that the law will come into effect in the summer of 2024, Apple has ample time to clear their inventory and minimize potential losses.

I think it's fair to say that it's still "late" for Apple to do the switch no matter what the incentive was. USB-C has been a standard for at least 5 years now. The fact that it took 5 years since USB-C was standardized in the industry, for Apple to change the port out is not consumer friendly. Consumer friendly is appropiating your product to the arleady existing market. Waiting out with an inferior and outdated port, which licensing YOU OWN is a monetary decision and not user experience decision.

Everyone talks about how a good of a change is that. Just NO! How is it going to reduce waste of cables if now people already are or will be forced to switch from lightning to stupid USB-C and buy new cables? Lightning connector was more durable as well, entire time of me having a iPhone previously it never failed and that certainly wasn't the case of "charge only while not using it and in one spot" USB-C on the other hand - harder to clean, more fragile, now I can't leave it charging because it keeps disconnecting and reconnecting. Transfer speeds doesn't bother me and probably won't a regular consumer either.
