Why Apple Discontinued The iPod

Ғылым және технология

The iPod was one of Apple’s most iconic and successful products. Making up almost 40% of the company’s revenue at its peak, and selling over 400 million units since its release in 2001. So with all this success, why did Apple discontinue the iPod? Well, it came down to one of Steve Job’s core principles. “If you don't cannibalize yourself, someone else will...”

    Not since people purchased phones outright. iphones are now cheaper than the ipod touch if you get one second hand, and it will be a lot better than the ipod touch in everyway. Apple didn't drop the price despite it using very old chips and hardware. It also has terrible battery life. I have got the previous generation and it has always been bad. The first and second generaton had far better battery life.

    Tbh, there's literally nothing they can do to improve it because like what the video mentioned, an iPhone can do everything what an iPod can do. You could give a counter argument that they could give music focused features such as having a better DAC, supporting a larger library of music files and supporting headphones with higher ohms but thats just a bad business move for Apple. They aren't an indie company. They need to sell products that will cater to everyone. It's their business model. Having niche products like an iPod nowadays will waste valuable resources like research and engineering for nearly no profit margin in the end, they could lose millions along the process.

  • @banban5568

    @banban5568

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@carlosasan2604 No it won't. The product is just redundant to an iPhone to begin with. I'm not defending them but the existence of the iPod nowadays is a waste of factory space and research if they continue to sell newer models. That's just a bad business move for Apple. Focusing newer features and putting it on their newer iPhones is hitting two birds with one stone. This will be much better for consumers and manufacturers because it alleviates unnecessary resources for the company and unnecessary choices for the consumer.

    @@staringcorgi6475 it’s not practical, the hardware necessary to handle high impedance headphones, possibly two internal DACS, 2 or more headphones jacks with balanced audio and other audio related chips makes the device thick and heavy. Look at the Fiio devices, they’re THICC, but that’s for the audiophiles/ audio enthusiasts. Now for the average consumer I guess they could put some better DAC inside the iPhone to handle lossless and Hi-Res audio, but not high impedance headphones.

    That’s a very good idea. I still use my iPod classic everyday because i always liked the quality of the sound over other mp3 players, but today the truth is that with a good connection you can make the streaming sound better than that. So it would’ve been cool to see the iPod trying to sound better than the streaming and more similar to CDs. I always saw that as the iPod evolution path after the iPhone, but nothing happened. The niche market would’ve paid for it.

My first apple product that I've owned was a 4th gen iPod shuffle that I won. If it wasn't for that maybe I would be into apple now. Oh lord I loved that thing. I took great care of it. Never did I dare to take it out of its case or drop it. And when I did take it out of its case I did it on a soft surface to clean it. I remember getting apps like oovoo, tango, and line where I could watch ads and rack up minutes. Line back then gave you a phone number to use which was so sick on I pod. And it’s what a kid could do for not having a phone yet. I felt like a big man being able to call my cousins that had phones already. It was a very satisfying thing for me because I truly feel like I earned it. Pretty soon my parents felt comfortable enough to buy me my first I phone 5. Than the 6,7 and X. I now have a 13 and take care of it the same way I took care of my little I pod. I actually have my first ever iPod touch in my piano seat. Unfortunately it got disabled for 42 years somehow. But I’m trying to find a way to access it without restoring it. Point is, I will never forget my humble beginnings and it all started with an I pod touch.

    My favorite was the iPod video. That thing got me through the most stressful days at work. I remember downloading South Park episodes onto it and it always made my day better. Never got the iPod touch because I thought it was just an iPhone without the ability to make calls. iPads are just giant iPhones without the ability to make calls. I still use my iPod to hook up to my car stereo since I don’t like relying on having an internet signal just so I can listen to music.

    The ipod touch could've definitely stayed a while longer. it was basically the cheapest solution to experience IOS, while the base ipad was the 2nd cheapest (but with ipadOS) they could've made a new version this year, one with some slight upgrades, like a better screen resolution. Maybe it would have an A13 like the 9th gen ipad, or it could have an iteration of the A15 called the A15 lite, with it being underclocked, with one less GPU core, and maybe 3 or 4GBs of ram. Now the ipad and iphone SE are the cheapest mobile apple devices, meaning those are the best entry level devices for IOS. The ipod could've still stayed, because the touch specifically has all of the features of the iphone, excluding mobile plans, and better cameras

    @@mattiarubio3240 Okay, listen. It’s one thing for you to defend your precious iPod Nano from 2005, but then to call me a clown for suggesting you keep up with modern society? What was that for? All I was commenting on is that all your specifications you worship so much also come with the Apple Watch. You call the iPod nano useful? Well, Apple only *improves* their performance in technology. That was 17 years ago. Think of what they have accomplished now. They made the Apple Watch for a reason, and it wasn’t only for marketing and business. They have the same features, with the Apple Watch having much more. Its, as you said, “smaller and weighs much less than an iPhone,” (although, an iPhone didn’t even exist back then, so really that is completely useless to compare it to. Absolutely useless information). It charges very quickly. About 2 hours, from 0% to 100%. Realistically nobody, charges their Apple Watch from 0% to 100%. Also, as you said, “..it’s great when running or cycling since it tracks your distance and average speed..” so does an Apple Watch. Just much more improved and accurate benchmarks are included in the Apple Watch since it has much improved technology and not from 17 years ago. “Since it’s so small it can be carried much easier than a whole iPhone” well, I’ll have you know the Apple Watch does not need to be carried. Rather, it quite literally just straps to your wrist. Don’t even need to carry it. Problem solved. You might add, how you have to have your iPhone around you in order to fully unlock its full potential. Well, an Apple Watch series 7 can go up to 30 feet distance from its connected iPhone. If you’re just in the house, you will have no problem. If you are outdoors for a jog, well, it’s 2022. Everyone has their phone on them at all times realistically. It’s just being in the modern society of 2022. Listening to music. You say you can’t listen to music without paying on the Apple Watch? Wrong. Do you even own one? I have KZread music installed on my Apple Watch. Its free. The iPod nano, according to google, wasn’t exactly the easiest to listen to music on anyway. You had to plug it into a computer, open iTunes, and drag songs you already *purchased* from iTunes into your iPod nano. Not exactly free, either. Sure, you can listen to the radio. That must suck. You can’t just “skip a song” on the radio. You call it expensive? The iPod Nano was 149 + tax in 2005. That would be just around $220.57 today. The Apple Watch series 7 is around $530 + tax. That would be $361.76 in 2005. The ~140 extra dollars for the Apple Watch is totally worth the money anyway, including its hundreds of features the iPod nano doesn’t have. Adding AirPods to listen to music for the Apple Watch may be a hefty price tag. Then don’t buy AirPods if you can’t afford them. Cheap wireless earbuds that aren’t made by apple can also connect to apple watches just as any other apple device. AirPods are just the best option and sync the best and have extra features. The Apple Watch is really just the improved iPod nano. They don’t have entirely different functions. I can compare them. And I just did, *clown.*
