Apple had some ambitious plans to grow their revenue in India from one billion in 2015 to 5 billion in 2020. But this has proven difficult to achieve. Because in 2018 Apple failed to meet their revenue target of four billion, only managing to generate 1.8 billion from the country. And there are a few reason for this that I’ll cover in the video. Now it’s always been challenging for Apple to break into the Indian market, and it’s no different with the iPhone. So let’s start with one of the biggest reasons why, and that’s its high price.

Well that’s like telling Gucci or Supreme to lower their prices to sell better. It completely removes the premium and luxurious feeling of having an iPhone since they’re not cheap. Also, if Apple prices their stuff cheaper in one region than another, it’s going to lead to a lot of issues as people will buy the iPhones at a cheaper cost there, and sell them for a slight markup in the more expensive regions, thus out competing Apple authorized retailers in those expensive regions. Let me give you an example. Windows 10 keys in the United States cost A LOT of money, easily $100 or more. However, if you go on sites like CDKEYS, you can find the same keys for like 1/10 the price, typically around $10. The reason being is that in China, the piracy rate for products there is 90%, so instead of people buying a Windows key for $100+, they could just pirate it. Windows decided to sell their keys in China for $10, which resulted in an increase in Windows key sales in China. However, that resulted in people buying a bunch of cheap Windows 10 keys in China, and reselling them at a slight mark-up in regions like the US, outcompeting Windows prices in that region. Now, so many people just buy Windows 10 keys from CDKEYS and other sites than directly from Windows because it’s so much cheaper. This situation could easily be repeated if Apple decided to sell their products for cheaper exclusively in India to raise sales. It’s either Apple lowers their prices for all regions in the world (which is highly unlikely) or not change prices at all, and try to think of other more creative solutions that doesn’t just involve reducing their prices.

For comparison,a new 6S+ 128Gb costs the same as a new Samsung GS8+ 64Gb, which is about 600$, which may still be a lot more than it costs in the US, but buying the GS8+ is way more worth the money, you get much higher value. @Drug Dealer Ftw The thing about the general high pricing of Apple products is because it's "a premium brand", and this applies to wherever Apple sells its products. But, the increasingly higher prices the farther you get from the US is because of taxes I think. That would explain why here in Europe it costs much more than in the US, and even more in India, which is even farther from the US and the shipping taxes are way higher too.

I know the Indian market. Indians are not against spending a lot of money for fancy things. There is as hugely wealthy middle class now. Apple can easily sell a 700 dollar phone there. That would be 49000 rupees, if they really wanted to force the matter, a 5 inch 600 dollar phone (throwing it close to 40000). This is not an issue, they are the premium brand with a lot of cache. But I think the biggest problem for Apple is that they haven't even made a convincing argument that they are the superior phone in India. There is a level of neglect towards India that frankly ensures their failure. They can blame it on the fact that Indians buy only phones which are cheap. But that's because even buying a far more expensive phone in the android world is not so differentiated. Buying an iPhone is a highly differentiating experience, the sad thing is that is differentiating for the worse and that's what Apple needs to fix. If apple is about selling the best, frankly their iPhone in India, particularly with regards to services is so far off the mark that it's embarrassing. I think these are the kinds of things that make Tim Cook look bad, how could he mishandle such an important market.

Apple is becoming a luxury brand, and it does not give any real benefits over other smart phone brands on a day to day basis. They view apple the same way in china. TBH, if i were them, i'd rather spend my $1000 on an LV item rather than an apple branded smart phone that would be outdated in a year's time.

Well, Indians in general are very utilitarian in Nature (because of income, socio economic factors blah blah all that, Yes I know. The Statement is not intended to be judgemental towards them.) They are not the typical Westerners who have established themselves as Team Android or Team iOS. They look at value for money, and hence they adapt very easily from one established Tech ecosphere to another, if need be. And the need at the Moment is that previous Apple products owners have found their sweet Spots in other Brands like Huawei or Oppo or the likes. The middle Class who can afford expensive phones have also reached a "Semi Saturation" point with Smartphones, just like the Westerners. So there is also that factor. I can't state numbers, but only state opinions from people I know who are from India.

xxdrowssapxx1 look I am half Indian. I have family in India. There is a group of People there or people anywhere in the world who have extra money to spend. They buy nicer things... India is one of the largest importers of German cars, why? After all the cheap India 3000 dollar Maruthi car has 4 wheels and can do the same thing like getting places. People buy nicer things because they can and they want a nicer experience. Apple can have a great market in India. The problem is I think in western countries you could make a genuine argument for the iPhone being a much better product. In India, there is no way to say that the iPhone is even a decent experience. It should almost be illegal to ship Apple maps in Indian iPhones because it is non functional and a risk hazard. Being a luxury brand is no problem. India is the country where people spend thousands every year buying gold.

FinalLogicPro I don’t agree with you on this, because India is one of the largest importers of German made luxury cars. People there who have money want nice things to spend it on. That’s kind of people anywhere. The thing is a Mercedes is better in objective ways to a cheap India or American car. The iPhone has many advantages over android in western markets that receive Apple’s focus. In India the iPhone is frankly not the better product. That does not bode well for Apple. Their whole business model is make the best and charge a premium. They haven’t done the first part in India but are happily trying to do the second part. They need to focus.

@@edwardjohnston6286 you Do make a good case with the German Cars example. But the German Cars are also "dowgraded" to meet Indian Standards. Ground clearance is way higher than the European models because of the shabby roads, fuel efficieny is optimised with compromises in Build Quality and a few materials etc etc. So it's not exactly identical as to what one gets in Europe. But the Brand Name matters to those Indiana, regardless of the fact that the Indian Version is slightly shittier. So why doesn't that Work with Apple?

I don't think making iPhones cheaper is a solution for India. Firstly, 90% of the buyers of iPhones in India buy it because of the high price tag. In a country where there is huge disparity in wealth, iPhone is the easiest way to show that you are rich. Secondly, Apple won't be able to compete with the Chinese brands like Xiaomi and Oppos in the low cost market. Apple needs to innovate more and faster. Most of the features come to iPhones years after they are introduced on Android phones. Because of this, they are losing market share not just in India, but everywhere.

Apple has never really catered itself to anything other than Western market's. They've had phones out for more than a decade and only start giving a hoot in India and China when their sales peak and start to pivot? While almost every Android OEM under the sun has taken years of investment, patience and marketing on establishing a presence in countries not even mentioned in Apple keynote availablity rollout lists? I think this reaction from Apple is duly deserved. I simple can't fathom how markets like China and India and entire regions like Africa and South America get overlooked when sales are hunky dory in the States and Europe but all of a sudden take priority when they reach saturation point in those respective markets.

If we look at EPS (a measure of profits by investors) they had an all-time high up 7% from last year. Oooops Larry, you made a very big boo boo. Oh, and I almost forgot to mention, they have 120 billion in net cash on the balance sheet. China is a big important market to many smartphone companies. Proof of that is Samsung was down 13% last quarter and 22% the quarter before due to softness in China. Apple was down 5% in revenue. Who do you like if China goes into an extended slump? Apple who has 120 billion in cash, or Samsung Electronics who has far less. With that much cash Apple can hang in there for 2 decades or more. By the way in this last quarter Apple will add to their cash pile with another 22 billion or so. Damn Larry you don't know anything about toast.

(John 14:6) Jesus answered, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father but my me." Repent and turn to Christ Jesus before it is too late. For after this comes the JUDGMENT. Christ died for your sins and rose on the third day, showing that anyone who trusts in him for salvation, will have everlasting life. (John 3:16) For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

Companies don't stay on top for long if they saturate the market with no innovations for years. The only way out is reaching out to more customers. Says a lot about Apple's strategy if they are looking to expand into India. Apple has lost it's way in India but they can surely get it done with the 30% purchases if they want to. Besides the purchasing power of India is only going to increase in the future, I see little reason not to do it already.

The views that you presented were quite accurate. Also buying an iPhone does not make any sense in India as the price we pay for the features it offers is very high. Other companies provide better value for money than any Apple products. NO. Apple will not make a cheaper iPhone and NO Apple cannot make it big in Indian market. Even if Apple made a cheaper iPhone, it would still be expensive compared to it's competitors and other brands simply provide more value for money that Apple will ever will in it's entire lifetime.

The specs don’t matter in an apple product, that is why the iPhone se 2020 is as fast as the galaxy s20 and that is why the iPhone 13 is more faster than the s21 ultra and has better camera because what matters in apple products is the optimisation between the hardware and software and by the way all the stupid Chinese companies like Xiaomi realme and oneplus sucks and are laggy because for whatever reason Indians never consider that he iPhone is WORTH the money instead of buying a stupid oneplus Xiaomi or realme or oneplus or a Vivo (I’m Indian too)

Apple needs to decide what company they want to be. If they want to stay in premium and super premium market for their iPhones, they will be essentially priced out of 3/4 of the global market as Chinese manufacturers are flooding markets with cheap and pretty good smartphones. Then Apple won't be able to grow their service revenues as they can only sell so much services in the very competitive western markets. If Apple wants to become a service company (as Tim Cook and others have stated so many times in the past year alone), they need to democratize the prices for their iPhone lineup and release a whole subset of budget iPhones that can have a chance to compete on face value. But Apple wants to be both premium market leader and service leader, which, I am afraid, won't be easy to achieve. Their pathetic attempts so far to open their services to non-Apple devices (like opening Apple music to Alexas and iTunes videos to Samsung TVs) is not near enough, as neither Apple Music, nor iTunes are competitive in their own right and can only now sustain themselves as is n the closed Apple ecosystem.
