I pick Vader but Fleet Admiral Pieet is an amazing character
I've always liked Piett. Even back when I watched these movies as a kid and didn't have the cognitive ability to really recognize the nuance of his character, I just liked his behavior. Fearful, which is justified, but stoic. The kind of quiet, humble professionalism that I wish showed up in antagonists more often.

I love Piett, he’s such a well made character. He is competent, written to know what he’s doing and sabotage Ozzel, and never makes a mistake. He wasn’t a main bad guy like Vader, just a competent leader who did a good job and followed orders to the best of his ability. Vader recognized that he didn’t screw up when the Falcon escaped, and didn’t kill him for it.
Almost no mention of General Maximilian Veers. Dude Not only leads from the front, but systematically and successfully destroys Echo Base.

Veers was a ground warfare genius in a military dominated by Naval politics. He was clearly excited to be tasked with such an important mission that only a ground assault could accomplish and he knew that once the Snowspeeders were all the rebels had, victory would be his.

For what it's worth Vader has a soft spot for Imperial Officers that play active roles, whether that be on the front lines alongside Storm Troopers or commanding fights among the stars, certainly helps that Piett isn't an overconfident jerk like many of his colleagues in such a position.
12:26 One thing I noticed here that you didn't mention was that Piett stands in front of the other officer as if to shield him from Vader. Neat little detail that once again proves how human Piett is.
Admiral Piett deserves a spin-off.

Piett and General veers are perhaps 2 of the only likeable imperials
He didn't kil Viett because it wasn't Viett's fault. He deactivated the hyperdrive as instructed. Vader is in touch with everything around him including the energy of every soul around him. I always felt that Vader sensed that Viett wanted that ship every bit as much as he did. I sensed that Vader valued Viett's loyalty and committment and that's why he didn't give him the chop.

I enjoy the look on Ozzel's face when Piett makes him look incompetent before Vader who says "That's it! The rebels are there!" which Ozzel tries to dismiss as "merely be smugglers". Which ultimately led to "You have failed me for the last time!"
Dude, I've been waiting decades for someone else to appreciate this guy!!!!!
I never got that line from Battlefront 2 EA, where Admiral Versio called Piett a fool. Outside of Grand Admiral Thrawn Piett is one of the smartest Imperial officers we see, I mean you don't get to command a ship like The Executor by being bad at your job/an idiot. So the line always feel odd to me
@rebellord5288

In canon the Executor was position too close to the death star, it wouldnt have crashed into the death star if it was further away but due to gravity from the death star, the disabled bridge and several engines being knocked out it crashed instead them being able to do repairs, so it was Admiral Pietts mistake.

There was a great deleted scene in episode six where Moff Jerrejord is ordered to fire on Endor and heistates to do so. It would be have been interesting seeing Piett and Jerrejord working together
Piett and to a certain extent Veers gets some love for the same reason Boba Fett did in the original films. All three of them earn Vader's respect. Maximilian Veers is a no-nonsense officer who is confident, and intelligent. He tries to defend Ozzel right up until the point where Vader makes it clear he's in no mood for that, and then what does he do? He wisely shuts his mouth, and does precisely what Vader tells him. He goes to the surface of Hoth and brings down the shield generator with military efficiency. Firmus Piett meanwhile proves himself more astute and intelligent than his superior, and survives failing Vader due to his many successes, earning a verbal rebuke rather than an ass-kicking. The fact that he's still commanding the Executor by RotJ indicates that Vader views him as valuable enough to keep in charge. Same thing with Fett, who is one of the few characters to back-talk Vader and get away with it, and who Vader offers things he does not have to, such as the Empire compensating him if Solo dies, resulting in loss of bounty. Pretty much all of that stems from Vader in a trickle-down of respect, because we know he suffers no fools, so by default, if he shows respect, it must be for a good reason.
General Veers in the corner watching Piett and Ozzel go at it: 😐
Ozzel mistreated all the other officers he served with. He also stole credit for when things went good even if he had nothing to do with the achievement and if things went bad would blame others for what was often his failures. As a result of the mistreatment a then Capt. Piett strategically starting to set up Ozzel for what would eventually happen in that famous scene. In the scene where he reports the probe's findings, he knew exactly how Ozzel would react, and he also knew Vader was in ear shot of the conversation when he reported the finding to the 2 senior officers.
Admiral piett also had a distain for bounty hunters he believed the imperial navy was just as capable of finding the millennium falcon.
"Somehow Admiral Piett has returned"
16:15 In the Thrawn book Heir to the Empire, Captain Pellaeon states that the Imperial Military hated the Death Stars, they saw them as the Emperor attempting to consolidated military power under himself, much like he did to the political structure. He marks that the only true loss on Endor was the Executor, which was a symbol of Imperial might, and when it died, carried a disproportionate number of highly talented Imperial Officers and crewman.
Remember that officer in Solo who gave Han his iconic name. He seemed like alright guy. I love it when the guy uses “son” when asked what Hans name is. It seems to be one of the more memorable scenes in that movie for me.
PS, it's "Ex-ec-u-tor", as in one who carries out a task, e.g. an executive. :)
Maybe Piett was demoted in VI because of his mistake that allowed Luke & the gang to escape at the end of V

I think it was costume error because we never see any other officer in ROTJ that could be performing Admiral-rank duties. Granted, ROTJ doesn't focus as much on the officers as ESB does, but during the final battle of ROTJ, Piett is the one in command on the bridge. If there is another officer who could be acting as Admiral, where is he in the middle of a battle?

Honestly, I like to be believe that Piett take notes on how not to get killed by Vader😅
I would say "Minor Characters" instead of "Extras". Extras are usually characters that fill spaces and have no dialogue. For example the bridge workers or stormtroopers standing around. Also that was one thing I like about Empire too, that the Empire itself was humanized a bit. ANH and RotJ also had scenes that did this, but they were deleted. ANH with the extended Death Star conference scene (which even drops the term "Sith"), and RotJ when the moff is clearly distraught and hesitant when Palpatine asks him to destroy the moon.
Дружище, это видео великолепно! Спасибо тебе за такой контент! Рад, что ты тоже любишь этого персонажа!
I wonder if Pitt makes notes on how not to get killed by Darth Vader😂
Real good video man I love the depth and research you put into this.
to be fair, the expressions you get in 3 seconds is not from writing, its from actors acting and directors directing theres plenty of stuff that written down looks like it would be fine, but put a bad actor or director in and it will always come out bad
Appreciated this. We always lampooned the "Intensify forward firepower!" line as kids. Irvin Kirshner did a fantastic job of dialing in just the right amount of humanity with the script and visuals without overstating things ("I love you" / "I know"), and Admiral Piett is a great expression of that.
Ken Colley, the Jesus of Monty Python's Life of Bryan.
I always thought when Ozzel gives Piett the look he’s basically communicating, “Vader doesn’t know what he’s talking about!” I think he was trying to turn more of his subordinates against Vader thinking it was his ship.
This video is criminally underrated great job righteous Jerry can
In the comics the emperor had a chat with Vader, essentially telling him to tone that killing officers stuff down because it was too hard to find high ranking officers to replace the ones vader was killing left and right. The emperor said he didn’t want to rule over an empire of dead men.

The irony that being palpatine’s Vision of an empire was what led to its quick downfall. I honestly think that if the empire was a better republic which rooted out corruption and worked with the galaxy. It would have remained in power longer and more widely supported.

Thank you.
The only issue I have with Piett is during the battle of Endor. No capital ship should ever be that close to the conflict, just look at how real life USN carriers operate. They will stay a distance away from the main battle and send in their aircraft when needed to keep air superiority but because of their important value as capital ships carriers will never get in close to the enemy if they can avoid it. The Executor should have been pulled further back and just launched wave after wave of fighters and that might have kept the SSD from being destroyed by a A-wing crashing into the bridge like a Japanese fighter in the ending days of WW2.

I find it hilarious that people complain about Palpatine's resurrection when he already cloned himself back in Legends. He always had a backup plan in the "main continuity" and the Disney one.
I would say Captain Needa fit the same bill as Piett he was not evil in the way Tarkin was but just an officer doing his job. He was actually in command of the republic star destroyer that sends the invisible hand planet ward in the opening of episode 3 though at that point he was a Lieutenant Commander. Like Piett he was willing to accept full responsibility when things went wrong and shared credit for when things went right. Exactly how actual real life military officers should be. Had I pulled an Ozzel during my time in the USN I never would have made it past Lieutenant junior grade (O2/single silver bar) never mind reaching my final rank of Commander (O5/silver oakleave). Its the guys like Piett that play it smart, do a good job and with a little luck reach the ranks of the flag or general officers (O7-O10) or at least it used to be. The current group of flag/general officers in the US military are far from the great leaders that should be in those silver star(s) positions.
Was that a Wedge Antilles cameo at the end of episode 9?
