    It would be so awesome to play at 30fps smoothly on pc, because not all of us have a master race PC with a 2070 and an exelent processor. Just imagine that, having a 1050 and playing your favourite game at ultra at 30fps smoothly, thats a wet dream.

  • @Sam-K

    @Sam-K

    Well, you can make your 'wet dreams' come true. It's simple; just go to Nvidia control panel > 3D settings and change the following settings: 1. Maximum pre-rendered frames: 4. 2. Triple buffering: On. Then go to game settings and enable 30FPS cap with V-Sync turned on. If there's no in-game framerate lock option then lock the frame rate from either RTSS or Nvidia Inspector. DO NOT use half v-sync as it'll cause a TON of input lag. Well, that's about it. Try for yourself.

The RTSS is the better option for lock framerate on 30, because the frametime will stay the same the consoles (33.3ms all the time), and works without having to close the game. In regards to frame times, the reason it's consistent on most console games but not on pc is the method in which the frame rate is capped. Most console games are v-synced, and both Microsoft and Sony offer a hardware level v-sync that developers can tap into that offers perfect frame times (as long as the game is hitting it's performance target). Developers could of course opt to use their own v-sync method, but this is where you can potentially run into issues with frame times à la From Software games (Dark Souls, Bloodborne). PC on the other hand requires users themselves to manually configure frame rate caps, and this is where issues crop up. Most games on PC have awful built-in fps cap options that deliver inconsistent frame times that becomes more and more noticable the lower you go, with The Witcher 3 actually being a perfect example of this issue. However, there are two solutions to this problem: either use the frame rate limiter or v-sync options in your GPU's driver settings (Nvidia Control Panel, Radeon Software) or use a program like RivaTuner Statistic Server (RTSS) to cap fps. These methods will ensure that your fps cap is delivering proper and consistent frame times for smooth playback. As an addendum to this; the displays that we use for console and PC gaming are also factors that must be considered. Most console users game on televisions that are either 60hz or 120hz while many PC gamers play on monitors that are 75hz, 144hz 165hz, etc. In a scenario where you're trying to compare 30fps between a 60hz television and a 144hz monitor, the 30fps will look fine on the tv and poor on the monitor regardless of how the frame rate cap was achieved. The reason being is there's a mismatch between the frame rate and the display's refresh rate. You see 30fps evenly divides into a 60hz tv but does *not* evenly divide into a 144hz monitor, so for the monitor you get noticeable judder due to the mismatch. To get a proper and comparable experience with the monitor you'll need to either set the frame rate cap to 36fps or lower your monitor's refresh rate to 60hz. Another potential solution is VRR (variable refresh rate) with low frame rate compensation. Many modern monitors offer G-Sync or Freesync, which are both forms of VRR. With VRR your display's refresh rate will dynamically sync to the game's frame rate ensuring smooth playback regardless if the frame rate evenly divides or not. There are of course pitfalls to properly setting up VRR on PC too, but look up a guide and you should be alright. I know this explanation was long winded, but I felt that the video's was a bit too simplified.

    Most of console's 30 fps games use adaptive half refresh rate in their vsync. 30 fps with 30hz refresh rate will always have smoother experience compared playing on PC in 30 fps with 60hz refresh rate. So if you want smooth 30 fps console experience in your PC, always use adaptive refresh rate sync in your gpu control panel or set your monitor refresh rate to 30. And set low latency mode (it's nvidia feature) to ultra to eleminate the input lag produced from adaptive half refresh rate.

  • @rodrigomendes3327

    Exactly this. Do you have any idea how to set low latency on AMD? It was possible on drivers before Adrenalin, but now we dont have it anymore. It makes huge difference when you have low frames. Specially on mouse input. But PCs have Scanline Sync x/2 (MSI AB), half sync and other features. Scanline Sync x/2 is even better than console method, with virtually no input lag and perfect framepace very well timed with refresh rate.

    one thing to remember, the mouse always move across the screen faster and traverse more pixel than a controller, so in that case it needs to draw more frames faster, which needs more than 30fps to look smooth. When PC is using a controller too, it is still not as smooth as console with a controller. Motion blur is one of the way to make it smooth. PC game can do motion blur too, but definitely not smooth.

    It's all about frame times. Look-up Digital Foundry's console benchmark videos. All 30FPS consoles games have a flat 33.3ms frame time graph whereas on PCs frame times jump all over the place. Luckily, you can achieve the same level of smoothness on PCs via *RTSS* and vsync. Other frame locking utilities like Nvidia Inspector and FRAPs etc. don't lock your frame times hence you'll always feel a slight judder.

    The main reason for the smoothier 30 FPS on consoles is consistent frame time (frame pacing). Though not every console game has a perfect frame pacing. I also noticed that when a TV has motion flow function and a game has perfect frame pacing (e.g., God of War, Ghost of Tsushima) it looks nearly as 60 FPS. At least on my Sony Bravia.

  • @racky2

    @racky2

    It's true, that motion flow makes a game look ultra smooth. The downside is, that u will get bad input lag with motion flow. At least it seems like input lag, but it's actually the TV always running a few frames behind. In games that require quick responses or first person shooters and stuff, I wouldn't recommend it, but there are definitely games in which that lag doesn't matter, so there u can turn it on for a way smoother video. Not that it's impossible to play properly with motion flow, especially in single player where it's not so competitive, but if ur playing a shooter, it can be a pain in the butt.

    This is one of the reasons, but not the main reason. The "secret" on console is having not only a good framepace, but a well timed frame/refresh rate. It's hard to achieve with PC at 30FPS. You will need something to sync it. FPS cap does nothing beyound just limit the frames produced. Vsync is a solution if you can keep solid 60FPS. But 30FPS is a problem since Vsync produces too much input lag (the double compared to 60FPS, which is already HUGE) and frames are not perfect time with refresh rate. To fix it nVidia and some games have half sync to limit at 30FPS and frames supposedly are well timed with 60Hz panel (or 37,5FPS on 75Hz and so on). But sadly, for reasons that I cant explain, frames are not solid (vary too much from 25 to 30FPS) and often frames are not perfectly tiimed. So what's the solution? Scanline Sync x/2 on MSI AB/RTSS. Search how to make it work and you will see that 30FPS gaming can be even better on PC (since there's no input lag at all on Scanline Sync. On nVidia you can turn low latency mode (Anti lag have similar resulto - very different process - on AMD) and voi la, a even better 30FPS gaming than consoles.

    I own both a high-end PC and a Console, and 30FPS on console is definitely much more enhanced, even if I plug it into my computer monitor it looks much-much better than trying to emulate it on PC. Even when Rivatuner/Afterburner shows 30.33ms there are 2-3microstutters per second when looking around in 360degrees which never happens in the same games I test on console. I have tried AfterBurner / Radeon Chill / Nvidia FPS limit and lastly the closest PC comes is Nvidia Adaptive (Half Refresh) which has a lot more input lag compared to console 30FPS. Furthermore, I have played games on PC where their own limiter shows inconsistent frame-times with Afterburner, but the game is actually much smoother than using a 3rd party limiter like Afterburner which displays that it is running at 30.33ms consistently. In addition, it is not about claiming 30FPS is better than 60FPS, but console 30FPS is better than PC 30FPS; also some of us prefer to be able to choose 30FPS in certain games where it gives a more movie-like cinematic effect, since visuals retain longer on screen, giving you more time to see reflections and lighting effects which happens to fast at 60FPS (very 3D looking in some games)

    Double buffer Vsync is a must. Use half refresh double buffer Vsync on 60Hz display. This will hard cap the game-engine. And don’t go with the highest setting. Go with what ever setting that’s slightly above 33.3ms like have a swing between 22.2ms (45fps) to 24ms (40fps). This performance headroom ensure your game to run at a lock 30fps even if on engine-level - it can swing between 40Hz-45hz. The drawback, yes you trade smoothness with input lag which is acceptable in single player games/campaign

    It's not only that. Consoles use adaptive sync to sync every frame with every refresh on monitor and it makes the bigger difference. You can use controllers and compare PC x Console and will have the impression that PC is worst. And yes, it is if you don't use any adaptive sync available on AMD or nVidia drivers. Sadly most people don't know about it. But the best tool is the Scanline Sync x/2 on MSI AB/RTSS. You can have a 30FPS gaming even better on PCs, without input lag (consoles have it).

    30 fps on pc is just as smooth as it is on console. You just think it isn't because on pc your frame rate is unlocked so you get used to seeing higher than 30 fps so when you lock your fps to 30, it looks rough. The way to undo that is to lock your fps to 15 and play like that for about an hour and then switch to 30 fps and then it will look just as smooth as it does on console.

    Frametime is related to performance, so if a game runs better on PC, and you can cap the framerate knowing that you'll never go below X amount of fps, your frametime should be smooth, unless there are other problems with the game, and in that case, you should experience that in consoles too. If you have drops, which is normal on weaker hardware (consoles count too), then your frametime could be bad. The only thing you can experience on PC, and you can avoid on consoles, are shaders compilation stutters. Those are starting to be less common, after so much backlash from the community, but you can still find them in some new AAA titles, altho... you can experience any other type of stutters on consoles anyways. It would be normal to experience a lot more stutters on consoles, just because framedrops are normal, and the CPU isn't great. On PC, because Frame Generation is a thing, you have more ways to deal with bad frametime and stutters, even on a PC that has similar specs to console (performance wise, at least). You don't have that on consoles, and it wasn't a thing on PC when you uploaded the video, but I explain this to those who are not familiar with this. People usually hear about it when they need it, like... a couple days ago, when the Frame Generation mod for Dragon's Dogma 2 was something everyone was talking about, because you can double your framerate with that, which is really helpful for a poorly optimized game. Keep in mind that it wasn't a bad PC port. It perfoms 10% than on Xbox Series X with a Ryzen 3600 and an RTX 3060, so it runs better than on consoles, even with similar specs, and you get access to Frame Gen on top of that, but the game is poorly optimized on any platform. Also: controllers are not the main cause of input latency. Look at Digital Foundry's video about Nvidia Reflex to see how different the input latency can be between consoles and PC, even when you use a controller. It is night and day. Your video is kinda weird at times, and not only because you can use a controller and have a smooth frametime on PC (and in more games too), but also, because motion blur is in both platforms. You say "motion blur is not turned on" for PC, when most games come with it turned on by default, and it is a setting, so anyone can turn it on in like 5 seconds, if they want. I didn't get what you meant with that comment, but, other than that, I liked video. It is misleading at times, but helpful to those who game on PC and can't get more than 35 fps. A framerate cap to 30 fps gives you a smoother frametime and motion blur helps with the lack of fluidity.

  • @renanvenanciodealmeida57
    @renanvenanciodealmeida574 жыл бұрын

    Actually, it's about frametime and sync of frames generation and reception between GPU and display. Frametime is lockable by using softwares like Rivatuner. Sync can normally be set by the GPU own settings. If that's all set up nicely, You don't really even need that motion blur or depth of field to get a more fluid consistant experience in PC gaming at 30fps. Although, if your PC can handle it, higher frame rates are obviously better for gaming, it can make a total difference in competitive games. In addition, input latency can also be improved to perform even better than it does on consoles, by setting pre-rendered frames to 1 or 0 and turn off frame buffering.

    I been playing with both my hole life and I can say that YES some games play smoother on console buttttt there is one missing information. Console games are low in graphics and the reason for that is performance. You might think the graphics looks good andamazing but it’s because you are sitting far from the TV. The close you get to the TV more you will realize that console graphics starts to get worst and worst and that is called, eye effect, when something looks good far but lose its picture quality when you get closer. Turning motion blur on pc will help smooth the game and cap your FPS 2 below your max refresh rate will give you a much smoother gaming experience.

    Whoever invented and implemented scanlinecync option in riva tuner needs to get a Nobel Prize, seriously. Finally you don't have to use crappy in-game option and are able to limit your frame time perfectly to 16.6ms or 33.3ms. But I'll still chose 60fps over 30fps anyday, anytime. 30fps is eye cancer, and it's beyond me why people still accept it. Vote with your wallets guy, don't buy 30fps games and publishers might start to change.
