Does Frame Rate Matter? 🤔 30fps vs 60fps vs 240fps

Ғылым және технология

Does FPS really matter? PC Centric explains what gaming frames per second means, 30fps vs 60fps vs 144fps, and if 240hz monitors are worth it.

I want to personally thank you for not overreacting like 30 fps is absolutely unplayable like most games in this generation. I'll admit that 60 fps is objectively better than 30 fps, but like you said, as long as it's a STABLE 30 fps, then there shouldn't a problem.

Bad programmers, that is why competitive online is a joke. You need to buy NVIDIA and go to 75 HZ is enough for me. FPS depends on the game too. Old glitchy games like cs runs in 100 fps while unreal gold runs with less fps much smoother imo.

Sword I don't need more fps if it delays all my gameplay. GameCube graphics like Resident Evil Zero looks cool. My eyes can't see much difference in the new technology they add. By the way the standard should be register in lan. Not everyone is going to buy a high end PC just to play The Witcher 3. Perfect Dark N64 graphics looks better than most old games you play. Maybe Max Payne 2 looked a bit better. Project IGI or No One Lives Forever. If they can make a new game that registers with 30 fps or 60 I don't need 100. Also fix the tearing effects I still think some programmers don't mind having tearing effects. I see no difference in 60 HZ and 75 HZ. I used to use Reforce in Windows XP which helps fixing the tearing effect.

Actually our brain is not perceiving frames per second, eyes capture permanent flow of information and the brain filters, real life very fast movement causes motion blur, not very helpful in a shooter game. You could even see as fast as a lillion fps.....just imagine you sit on a chair in total darkness an a lamp is in front of you and i will switch it on for 10 ms...you will see the flash...then 5 ms....1ms....0,0001 ma....you always peeceive the light in your brain....same with time, there is no present, actually it is a smooth flow from past to.future.

MacTX Thing is, it doesn't really matter if you go higher, because there's literally almost no difference hahaha. The major difference is between 30 and 60. From 60 on, it is almost the same, only the number is bigger. Ofc some dumbass elitist would tell you that there's a huge difference between 60 and 240 or something like that, but that's really not the case. Maybe if you squint your eyes you can notice something lol.

DrifterZ9 You're ignorant. The 144hz feels worlds smoother than 60hz to me. Also frame tearing is almost impossible to notice on a higher framerate. And the clarity is alot better if you move quickly. Also it has faster response time. TL;DR 144hz has way less noticeable screen tearing, faster response time, better clarity (no motion blur when moving quickly)

When I had the XG2530 on test I genuinely found my CSGO game improved but my BF1 definitely suffered. I have to say that I’m yet to be happier than I am using my 165hz 1440 IPS panel. I agree that the 240hz panels are aimed and sit squarely with the esports world and unless you are competitive I wouldn’t recommend it. Great video as always and always good to start a mass debate.

Well ive played a lot of time GTA SA on 30 fps and i didn't complain, however some months ago I've removed the frame limiter, I get around 100 fps and honestly i can't go back. For Crysis 2 is fine 30,i can't go any higher than that on that game anyway.

You really don't know how expensive gaming pc's are don't you? Parents struggle! You don't just buy a graphics card. You need a decent GPU and CPU for the best experience and playable frame rates. Something like the GTX 1050 ti and a intel core i5 8600k or an AMD cpu like the Ryzen 3 1200. Always make sure you have the correct socket for the CPU.

I don't have a awesome Gaming PC so can't say about 120Hz or 240Hz but I feel 30Hz on my PS4 is ok on certain games... one is Batman Arkham Knight as the game feels like it is running at a locked 30fps... But games like Just Cause 3 have terrible frame pacing which results in a poor experience. Some games are fine at 30Hz... Open world games etc. But playing games like CoD require 60fps due to responsiveness mattering more... Let me know by replying if you agree with me or disagree I would be curious to hear what you all think ;)

I have a 2K 144 Hz its the smoothness that you notice. No way would I want to go backwards and play any game at 60 FPS/Hz. Frankly I'm ordering the ASUS PG35VQ 200 Hz 21:9 1440p as soon as it's available _and probably getting a second GTX 1080._ All the other 21:9 1440p are 100 Hz due to the current DisplayPort limits. Obviously it's expensive but that isn't my problem nor my kids. Yes on most MP games FPS/Hz plays to an advantage. This is why people play PS4's and play against grade school kids. However, there are diminishing returns over 120 Hz, I'll let you know when I can't tell the difference anymore and I'm an old guy and CoD player.

Framerate doesnt make you a better player, if you cant do any good with 30fps you wont do any better even in 200fps. In fact most good pc players have shitty PCs but they are good because they play a lot while most people with amazing PCs suck because all they care about is the graphics and the framerate. That comes from a PC gamer with an above average gaming pc.

Honestly, I have always been playing on 60 Hz monitors for as long as I had a gaming pc. I won a none gaming 120 Hz monitor and I have to say that the difference is there. For some game I capped at 60 to test, then uncapped again and the difference is there. An easy demonstration is LoL, although you don't need high fps in it, but its a test bed, cap fps at 30, then at 60, then at 120 and you will immedietly notice the difference.

But I can literally sit here side by side with ff14 playing on ps4 at 30 fps and ff14 on PC capped at 30 fps (cap from in-game and rivertuner) yet the ps4 still looks better. I just wanted to know why so If I was ever forced to play at 30 fps i could get that smoother feel. But hopefully I will be at 60-100 for a while lol.

Because ps4 has a crap ton of motion blur, and you are probably sitting further away from it.

Have you ever noticed how older magnetic ballast fluorescent lights make everything strobe and kind of flicker? next time you are under commercial fluorescent lighting, or in an older building with aging lighting systems etc, move your hand back and forth, it will look as if your hand strobes instead of moving smoothly. that's because older ballasts flicker at 60hz, or in other words, illuminates your hand at 60 flashes of light per second (they don't go completely dark but flicker from 30% brightness to 100% at a frequency of 60hz). It was determined that because 60hz wasn't high enough, it was causing headaches and caused a reduced perception of the speed of an object under that type of light. For this reason, new electronic ballast designs flicker at 120hz instead. If you are playing a PC game, especially a fast moving one, perception of moving objects is pretty important, so framerate will absolutely matter.

30 is horrible to me. 60 is the bare minimum. but when you are playing in the high 100s you can see a difference. not in every game though. forza 7 at 144hz doesnt look much smoother than 60 due to it being a slower game. but overwatch and titanfall 2 is just a different level. play at 144hz for a day then move back to 60 and you will feel the huge difference.

Well going by your argument as well, 30fps isn't bad in all games. Compare Breath of the Wild and it feels really good at 30, that's one of few games that doesn't make me wish for a higher frame rate. I play at 144hz on PC for context of what i'm used to.

Sackboy it’s not an argument. It’s just my opinion. I don’t like 30fps on any game that I have played. I can play at it but it’s not a very good experience. The last game I played was final fantasy on PS4. After a while you look past it but it’s still not a smooth experience

Sorry, opinion not argument :) Yeah that's fair enough, I guess what i'm trying to say is that there are definitely exceptions for some games that run at 30

'then move back to 60 ' I've had this experience as well. But IMO if you have to take away the higher fps in order to appreciate the difference then the difference isn't that pronounced. In my experience (as a 165Hz monitor user) the difference between 60 and 165fps (let alone 144) is quite difficulty to appreciate at the point of turning the settings up. You can only really tell (and miss it) once you acclimitise and try and go back. But I also use my monitor for consoles so I often play at 30fps as well, and again, you can acclimitise after a few hours. IMO the difference between 30 and 60 is absolutely massive. You don't even have to have a moving camera or character to immediately tell (something as subtle as the wind ruffling a character's hair will be appreciably smoother). But after that point (especially after you get past 80fps with G-Sync engaged) it becomes harder and harder to tell any difference for me. The diminishing returns are just too great. Personally, I'm perfectly happy with 80fps as I feel it's the point where increased perceivable visual smoothness (that is appreciable at the point of turning the settings up) sort of tapers off.

Sackboy every game can benefit from higher frame rate. 60 should be the standard now. No excuse for gaming running less than that nowadays.

I would say the main benefit of framerate over say 120Hz/fps is not really better response time but rather smother panning. This have really nothing to do with the response time of the eye, but rather how smooth its moved. For applications like VR this is really very important
