Yep! My friend made it to the 3rd audition to So You Think You Can Dance Canada. (You needed 3 auditions before you have the chance to be audition in front of the celeb judges). After the 3rd audition, they drilled him with questions about his past with family, schooling, housing etc. And after waiting several hours, he was told he couldn’t advance because he didn’t have a “strong backstory”.

If I may impose a thought upon those who'll read this after the video, along the lines of what Danny Bevins has said here: Imagine if Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson was a judge of one of these talent shows, and asked "What's your sob story?" to contestants.... "IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT YOUR SOB STORY IS!!!!".... ...would kill me, every time.

Are used to love all of the got talent shows in the American idol and the voice and all that stuff… But I stopped watching a couple years ago. It stopped being about the talent that people had, and all about how sad their life story was. This is comedy, yes, but it’s also the truth. I may be missed a couple winners as I haven’t really kept up but in my opinion, Darci Lynne was the last winner of any talent show that we get broadcast here in the states, that one on pure talent rather than sob story.
