WHOA! Who dumped a can of grease in this reel? How To Properly Grease Your Reel: Fishing Reel Repair

Спорт

Here's a great example of the what waaaay too much grease in a reel looks like and the ramifications of such actions, plus the proper way (okay, my opinion of the proper way) to grease your fishing reels. Specimen reel in this video was a Penn Spinfisher SSV 4500. See below for helpful equipment and supply links. I had a 4500. It was turning with a lot of resistance and had bee dunked in salt water. I sent if back to Penn for service since it was under warranty. It came back working better, but still quite a bit of resistance. I opened it up and it looked just like the one in your video, maybe even more grease. So I bet the reel in your video came just like that from the factory. I got all that excess grease out and the performance was way better.

    Thank you so much for such an informative video 😊. I have Penn Slammer 3 and I plan to maintain it. Which grease do you recommend using: Ardent butter grease or Penn precision blue? I ask this because the viscosity of the 2 is different. Penn blue is much heavier and will make the reel a little slower than Ardent would do. I fish inshore and never get intruison of saltwater..

    Thanks for watching! See my Slammer video by searching "Slammer TSG reel service". I use the Penn grease and add a little more than a light coat. Inshore is still water.... you'll never know what got in until you open it up.

    I've been swimming out to the sand bars with my Penn Fierce. 1st version. After a week in the surf, the reel started to corrode and became hard to turn due to my abuse of the reel that wasn't designed for underwater use. Well, after cleaning, I filled the body with wheel bearing grease. It made the reel have more resistance in turning. So much grease that the grease started coming out the main shaft beneath the spool. I fish off sand bars atleast 14 days of each year. This reel is atleast 10 years old now. I do open the reel and top off grease each year. Never cleaning the internals. Never had water mixing with the grease. No corrosion internally of any type. 2 down sides, the grease is so thick, when fishing in sub 30F weather, the anti reverse bearing fails to work. It takes about 200-300 turns prior to fishing to make it work. In summer or fall weather never a problem. The 2nd problem is when temps are 90F , the grease becomes thin and flies out from under the spool during fast cranking. Then I get small grease clumps on my clothes. The stains do not come out. Since then, I now fill all spinning reels with "super Lube" its a clear silicone grease which doesn't stain my shirt. The low temp causeing the anti reverse not to work is still a problem below 30F but, it now only takes 20 -50 cranks and the bearing returns to working. So as stupid as filling a reel with grease appears, In my experience, If you can't afford a proper water proof reel, filling a $70 reel with grease will get you 10 years + of good service . Use silicone clear grease to avoid staining of your clothes. Just saying.

    Excellent video, thank you!!! Thanks god I found your video :) I was about to open my reel and fill it with grease. I got new Clash 4000 a year ago but rarely use it ( few hours in total). I do lure & soft bait spinning but mostly with Daiwa reels. Now, when do twitching I can feel a “knock” in Clash, also when hooking up the fish I get that same filling like shaft wants to go out :) Beside that no issues. Any idea what can I do by myself about it because no repair shop nearby- or it’s common for all Clash reels. I also have Slammer III 4500 but it do not “knocking” on twitch. Thanks

    You're welcome and thanks for watching! I'm thinking of two things off the top of my head: 1) your shaft is bent. You can check it by rolling the shaft (not including the click gear assy) along a flat surface and check for anomalies. 2) your crosswind block could be flexing/rotating.... take off your side cover and rotate your spool back and forth to see what the block does and how much play is there. If it's slight, you may be able to get away with packing it with grease.... if it's severe, you should consider replacing the block and crosswind gear. Hope that helps and good luck with the servicing of your reel(s).

    @@TSGReelService Thank you for your reply and support. Last night I had a spare time to follow your instructions, and after many hours and several openings I was able to detect the issues (hope so) - on the bail holder screws were loose on both sides ( from factory) so much that I was able to make several turns of each by hand only. The screw on line roller was loos too. At the and - loose bail cause free play when the rod and reel are under the stress while twitching, which cause that “knocking” feeling. Thank you again!!!

Can i just sprey the reel with wd 40 till the grease comes off and clean it with a rug and use maybe machine oil the one for hair cutting machine ?

    Ok, as far as keeping the salt and whatnot off of the components, I get it. But what about lubrication? You need something to keep those contact points between moving parts protected. Not, like that reel had at the beginning of the video, but certainly more than just a very thin coat. Edit: For clarification, my comment is more of a question and not a criticism. It's my first knee jerk reaction to the information I'm receiving here. I will actually try it and see how it works out.

  • @TSGReelService

    @TSGReelService

    Thanks for watching! First off, I LOVE getting your initial thoughts on the video, and that you didn't edit them out. The light coating area is one we can certainly disagree on.... some may prefer more than that on the inner housing, and that's okay.... it doesn't add any extra protection, but it does help ensure you don't miss a spot. Regarding the greasing of the gears, any excess will be pressed out during the engagement of the reel, so, in general, putting more than a light coat doesn't serve much purpose. That being said, I have two caveats: 1) the same rule as for the housing, where you help ensure you don't miss a spot applies to the gears also. 2) there are some reels I service that perform better with what seems like a little too much grease on the gears. Tackle advisors has a video on greasing a reel if you want to check it out. I think it was a Daiwa BG. He's looking for max protection... my guess is for surf fishing... but I still think he could have gotten the same result with less. But, as he says, a little bit of [extra] grease never hurt nobody.... and I agree with that statement! Thanks again for taking the time to put your thoughts to paper! More vids to come. Extra grease will create extra resistance putting more load on the gears resulting in more wear and tear. This is perhaps the optimum amount of grease you should put in a reel. Good video and explanation.
