WHO WINS: RED ANTS VS BLACK ANTS

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Who would win in an ant war between red ants and black ants? This video reviews 2 colonies: a red tropical fire ant colony (Solenopsis geminata) and a black crazy ant colony (Paratrechina longicornis) and what happens if we were to mix the two together. I also review what in my experience are the easiest ant species to keep as pets in North America and Europe. Visit us at www.antscanada.com

    I've seen an ant war before in nature, it was red ants vs black ants (in the UK) and I was watching the two nests as I was curious as to why they were so close together. Then I saw a red and black ant bump in to each other and suddenly zoom back to their nest. Next thing I know, ants come pouring out of both nests and charge towards each other. They fought on to the death and I even saw ants dragging wounded allies back to the nest! Eventually, the black ants were victorious and then they moved in to the nest and took it over. It was a truly fascinating thing to see.

    Thanks for sharing! Have seen something simmular, though here in Norway red ants spray acid and black ants just have their teeth. It was a tiny red ant colony living beside a huge black ant colony. They lived beside one another for a few months with regular scirmishes. Now and then the black ants would make a big push against the red ants leaving piles of dead black ants. Including warrior ants(the winged ones) from both sides. They had their final battle in the mating season though. Both hives tried to mate their future queens in the same 10x10 meter, flat concrete area. There were dead bodies everywhere, and warriors buzzing around, fighting as well as competing for the queens. After a huge battle the red ants were finally outnumbered, and the remaining red ants fled far away protecting their last princess. Only a few warriors and a handfull of workers survived. We later found their new collony ontop a cliffhang, fighting a newly arrived band of earthwasps over a healthy blueberry field.

    I've read an article on these 2 ant species. A person placed a dead cricket between the fire ant colony and the black crazy ant colony. The fire ants arrived at the crickets first, the black crazy ants launched an assault but the fire ants overpowered them with their venom. The black crazy ants did the most interesting thing I ever heard of in the ant world, they head to one side of the battle, sprayed formic acid and sucked it into their mouths, then ran their legs through their mouths and spread the formic acid all over their body and that detoxified the venom from the fire ants before heading back into battle. This means crazy ants have the ability to neutralize fire ant venom, which gives them the advantage when competing for food.

    Weird thing is: Here, in the UK, we get Myrmica Rubra - the European fire ant - which has a painful sting - APPARENTLY - and is a major pest in the US. But I will happily lie on the ground near their nests. I never even found out what they were until last week. They are just so chilled out. I've never been stung by an ant. I don't think I even know anyone who has. There's an abandoned quarry where we all used to go and sit on the grass and drink, or camp and drink, or sit round a fire and drink, and the whole floor of the quarry is full of these fire ants nests, yet I've never heard of anyone ever being stung by one. They don't swarm unless you start digging in the soil, and then, it's not for defense, it's just a few guys starting repair work or moving eggs and pupae. Normally, you never see more than a few of them at once. I have no idea how this species has caused so much trouble in other places

    what would happen is the original colony that he is keeping would kill the outsider, since the outsider cannot listen to the queens commands simply because he is not used to her scents, and she is not used to his... therefor he would be un-coordinated and simply useless to the ant colony, they would kill him.

    As a youngster, I had one of those "Ant Farms" that were sold to kids. There was a form included with the Ant farm, that you could use to send away for ants (I don't know what species). But living in the South, there were many, many red ant piles in the area, so I used red ants for my Ant Farm. I would wait for a sunny day, so that the red ant eggs would be near the top of the mound when I disturbed it. I also tried to capture a queen, but since red ant colonies only have one queen, I probably only captured an unfertilized royal. The red ants were amazing to watch as they dug their tunnels and set up separate areas for their eggs and their unfertilized "queen". My Ant Farm thrived. Unfortunately, some of the newly hatched red ant workers escaped thru the small air holes at the top of the Ant Farm, which prompted my mother to permanently end my Ant Farm experiments.

I used to be allergic to insect stings, so I have been taken to the hospital due to a bee sting once, and more than once due to red ants. The worse I can remember gave me a 41ºC fever, it was very painful. I don't have theses allergic reactions anymore, but I do keep my distance everytime I see a fire ant nest.

    In my backyard, in Miami, the reds have all but lost . Thirteen years ago, when I moved in, the place was full of tropical fire ants. Unlike most of Florida (and throughout the South), ‘germinata’ , not ‘invicta’ is the common local species. There were some black crazy ants too, but not too many. At that time, the property was mostly lawn grass, with a few coconut palms. After years of digging, breaking up ‘coral rock’, receiving a few painful giant centipede bites, and being stung by many fire ants, the yard is full of mainly native trees, shrubs and vines. I tried to recreate the indigenous ‘tropical hardwood hammock’ environment, which has been very successful. Over 100 species of birds (instead of 3-4), 30+ butterflies, 7 types of anoles, and lots of other things now live here. As the shade increased, so did the crazy ants. Now, the fire ants are mainly in the front, adjacent to the street. I’ve heard that in South Florida, crazy ants often attack and destroy fire ant colonies, causing their decline. Also it seems, as an area becomes more wooded, crazies seem to benefit more. One last thing- the sheer numbers of crazy ants around town, in the yard, and occasionally in the house, can be amazing. They are fun to watch, from the carrying dry cat food pieces up a wall, a big roach off the kitchen counter, to rapidly moving a cheerio across the bedroom floor. I’ve witnessed them more than once suddenly fill my car, (or some other space) then be gone without a trace a few minutes later. One positive...unlike most other ants around here, they thankfully don’t bit or sting. You have a great channel, I really enjoy your videos!

    When i was a kid i used to pair the two together. i had nests close to where i lived. My conclusion: If the numbers are even red ants win like 60 - 65 % of the times. But you need just + 1 black (so like 60 red vs 61 black) to turn the tide. so they are extreamly close... but red ants are slightly stronger one on one. tho i guess that has to do with the fact that they are slightly bigger. yes i was a strange kid xD

  • @RikthDcruze

    @RikthDcruze

    I did the same too as a kid. But what I noticed was black ant colonies mostly won because of their sheer numbers. They would mostly over run the red colony or sometimes the reds would fend off an attack and the blacks retreat with a lot of losses on both sides.

    I wonder how they'd fare based on biomass... from your analysis, with equal biomass of insect, the simpler but faster and better-coordinated black ants could win. As Tierzoo might put it, the red ants have incredible build options and an array of powerful weapons that allow them to take on foes in much larger weight-classes, but the simpler loadout of the rushdown black ants is far superior in single combat. Putting all of your evolutionary points into one weapon can be very potent, but not so much when your foes are numerous and individually weak.

  • @nicolewolfcry7408

    @nicolewolfcry7408

    I would think it also sort of comes down to their method of killing. 1 red ant can sting and kill a black ant. However, Black ants rely on strength in numbers to keep from getting stung by the red ants as well as attack them.

    Never in my life have I ever been interested in having or studying an ant colony, until now. Bravo my friend, video is very well done. And btw, I believe the black ants would win in a 1v1 or 5v5 simply because you can't kill what you can't hit. As the numbers increase, I believe the fire ants would emerge victorious due to their venom and mobbing technique.

    In a colony war, I don't think it would depend on skills. It would depend on intelligence. At first the ants would be really shocked that there is another colony. It depends on what colony attacks first. A few dead ants can go a long way. That will probably determine who wins. (Unless you give one colony mini rocket launchers. Imagine that. XD)

  • @fire2fireable

    the black ants would probably do a more evasive tactic getting a lot of them within the colony without being noticed then attack from the inside out i feel like this is more especially if they have a bigger in numbers aswell but an ambush would catch them with their dicks out so eh i think even if they had even numbers theyd win
