Never underestimate our ancestors. They may not have had our tools and toys, but brain-wise… there likely was not much of a difference for several tens of thousands of years. The earliest individuals on Earth to look up at the sky and observe the Sun and the Moon and the stars were our ancestors who lived about 300 million years ago. This was after the eye had evolved in the creatures who lived in the sea, and they crawled out of the sea and evolved a brain that could recognize objects in the sky. Those were the first astronomers, but they probably didn't try to write anything down though.

Ancient people spent a lot more time outside, then we do nowadays.
