I literally am directly decended from that guy and still have his last name although somewhat changed over 700 years or so. After our family's fall from power we have stayed pretty lowly ever since.

The spelling was due to people not knowing the way to write and going by how it sounded,my grandfather went to Normandy on a school trip to trace our family via a church.I love the name you have.

@@nukelertoonz8418 Haha! Must be a lot of Montfort's by now. My own, lowly, Norwegian family, that was farming in 45 degree hills, with a spade, until the oil and riches in the 70's when I was born into a spoiled life, that I can trace back to the 1300's are filling up a whole cemetery near the family farm.

Simon de Montfort wrote the Provisions of Oxford. He established the very first Parliament. He lost the battle of Evesham because of his great love for his wife, Eleanor Plantegenet. She was Henry lll's sister and he could not bring himself to kill his inlaws. Edward I was her nephew. The Plantegenets were ruthless and had no such qualms about murdering an inlaw. They killed Simon with no sense of consciousness. Eleanor became a nun because of her remorse.

Thanks for the short, but informative video. I was hoping to learn more though, but I guess this is mostly basic info. I'll subscribe anyway, any quality history channels on KZread deserve more attention. I'm obsessed about British history, even more so then my own Norwegian history, that probably is more colorful at times, but sadly lack written sources, like for example the Anglo-Saxon Chronicles.

They forgot to mention one of the most important actions De Montfort bravely took which altered the course of our history and culture for a few hundred years. The guy was a hero!

At 1:49 a definition of Martyr is flashed into the screen saying "put to death (also) because of their POLITICAL beliefs". This is false. No source for this is given.
