Ten Minute English and British History #11 - King John and the Magna Carta
Twitter: / tenminhistory
Patreon: www.patreon.com/user?u=4973164
This episode covers the reign of King John and the problems he had securing the Angevin inheritance and the subsequent issues his baron's posed. These problems culminated in the signing of the Magna Carta in 1215 which severely limited the strength of John and his son, Henry III, whose reign was overshadowed by the document.
Ten Minute English and British History is a series of short, ten minute animated narrative documentaries that are designed as revision refreshers or simple introductions to a topic. Please note that these are not meant to be comprehensive and there's a lot of stuff I couldn't fit into the episodes that I would have liked to. Thank you for watching, though, it's always appreciated.

As crazy as this sounds, we kind of owe a debt to John. If he and then his son Henry had not lost Normandy and Anjou, then their would probably never of been focus on the growth of Middle English in the 13th and 14th Centuries (i.e. The Hundred Years War) and the English Speaking world today might instead be a French or Latin one, with English relegated to a minor language on the verge of extinction like Cornish or Manx (spoken on the Isle of Man) or at the very least, English would of taken longer to gain prominence or of been relegated to a regional language like Welsh or Scots Gaelic.

The nickname Lackland was not due to losing land to France but to the fact that he was the youngest son & his parents had already divided up their lands among the older sons.
This is making me want to play CK2 again.
5:08 - Marshal’s sign says “his majesty is grounded!” 😂🤣 Did his majesty miss curfew? That’s hilarious!!!!!!!
To quote Jack Rackham re: richard "a man with the heart of a lion and a lifetime ban from the zoo"
John's sobriquet, 'Lackland' had nothing to do with his loss of land on the Continent. He was given it long before he became King, when it was highly unlikely that he would inherit any land. In fact, he was given the nickname by his father after King Henry had made clear the distribution of his domains when he died, and John was left nothing.

@intergalactic92

My general opinion is that John was dealt a bad hand with much of the failures of his reign being a result of Richard's failings. The expensive wars and the ransom meant that there wasn’t much money left for John to go to war himself, plus I wonder if the reason the Barons were so unruly under John was in part down to the fact Richard rarely set foot in England, leaving the barons in charge. So essentially they had grown used to having the power and didn’t like the fact they suddenly had a king actually taking interest in his realm.

Yeah but people actually liked Richard
@Amalot

@@Man_United_USA Depends what you mean by 'people'. To the English, Richard's first language was French, he was an absentee king spending most of his time in France or the holy land, visiting England only when he needed more money to fund his wars. The narrative the he was a popular king was formulated long after the medieval period.

To be fair to John, elder brother Richard left a seriously clusterfucked kingdom, which John somehow had to pull together in the face of baronial hostility. Judged from that viewpoint, he actually did pretty well.
1:59 As a proud Northamptonian I am duty bound to point out that King John's son Henry III founded the University of Northampton in 1261, only to revoke it 4 years later when the academics rebelled against him. So technically it was the one other university founded before 1824.

Love how people die right at the start, it removes the suspense
John I is an ancestor of mine, 28 or 26 generations ago (depending on which line you follow, it's complicated). My very Mormon brother commissioned a genealogical search that went back to Henry II. We came through an illegitimate daughter of John. There were other kings as well. Edwards I and III.
One of my favorite facts about the conflict between Louis and Henry III is that Louis hired a French pirate named Eustace the Monk who carried out raids in the English Channel
