@@kbrown5218 You’re worried about crop losses compared to people trying to survive a heat wave without any power. Food and cooking are an issue for every person without power, but… crop losses. There will be insurance, federal loans, grants, and aid to help with crop losses, but people are literally dying of heat exhaustion or without power for medical devices. You’re absolutely right. What are lives compared to crop losses? What are preventable deaths if proper investments in power infrastructure were made compared to crop losses. Thank you for straightening out my priorities. 🤦‍♂️

So quit blaming the utility companies for "not being prepared" when you don't have an emergency power generator or 1 single solar panel on your roof!!! Hello!!!! I still had my 10k watt gas generator which I've had since Ike in 2008, and used it daily this week since transformers were down everywhere around me for days... coupled with a 12K BTU window AC unit I was able to stay quite comfortable and keep the fridge and box freezer cold and make coffee in the mornings and charge my cell phone and tabletpc so I could have internet access thru my cell phone hot spot etc. It was not fun, but I wasn't miserable at least. Friends of mine, when they got COVID stimulus checks in 2020 they asked me for generator recommendations and then they BOUGHT generators with that money (and boy did they use those generators this week and last May!)... what did all these other people use those stimulus checks for I wonder? HELLO!!!! If you live in an apartment without power due to the storm, then there are power stations you can buy and once charged they can supply you with a modest amount of power to run lights fans and charge your devices for a few days even and since they don't burn fuel but use batteries instead you can use them INSIDE your apartment. And finally, Texans need to stop hating on solar so darn much the sun was shining down intensely after Beryl had passed thru and with a solar array most Texas homes in the affected area could have been making their own power from that powerful natural resource shining down on us that was instead just baking their roofs and heating up their homes to intolerable levels inside. Preparedness starts with YOU the individual home owner! The grid is vulnerable and as long as power transmission is via wires on top of poles it will always be the weak link between utility company power generators and your home. I say if you can't do better, then you might not want to live here people. smh! 😐

And my final thought on this situation is: You cannot have an unlimited population in a limited area! A decade ago Texas had a power surplus, now we don't thanks to millions of new people moving here from everywhere else... more people is only beneficial to a certain number then the masses start to become a liability then an albatross around the neck finally. The Law of Diminishing Returns applies even to the human species, more people is not better beyond a certain number and we have far exceeded that ideal number already. There were around 4 million people in the Greater Houston area when Ike a Cat 3 storm blew thru here in 2008... now there are nearly 7 million people here I'm told, and look at the havoc that a mere Cat 1 hurricane just caused. What's going to happen when a strong Cat 4 or 5 hurricane strikes this area? Cause it is coming this way y'all, likely sooner than later. Just saying. 😞

My friends bought generators with that money (I already had a 10K watt generator I had bought for Hurricane Ike in 2008.... but now I'm seriously researching getting a solar panel array and power station with batteries cause finding enough fuel to keep that generator running is just not easy and it gets expensive and there's no way of knowing how much fuel I need to have on hand before a storm strikes; I was almost completely out of fuel before my power was restored Thursday and I was getting very concerned about it!).

There was a lot of damage and Center point is working very hard. Restoring over 1,000,000 in less than a week is amazing. After Rita in 2008 it took 3 weeks for Beaumont to get power and that was for only 200,000 people.

Since it appears that most of the power outages were caused by large trees dragging down power lines and poles, it seems like lack of “tree maintenance” was the primary culprit. If so, and since most of the trees involved are on private property, maybe what the city and surrounding counties need to enact is some kind of property tax specifically for subsidizing the immense costs involved by the power companies to perform the maintenance on a timely basis.

The finger pointing, 1 finger pointing and 3 fingers pointing back at you. Yes center point obviously had rotten poles, and they have to fight every home owner with trees that over hang powerlines. Texas needs to pass a law where power companies can cut down any trees that threaten a power line. Next they need to test older poles for rot and replace. For those that can't take the coast humidity without electricity, you live in the wrong place and should move.

These people are like the Israelites after coming out of Egypt, starting to whine and complain only three day later.(Ex 15:23, 24; 16:2, 3; 17:1-4) The power company is having to deal with not just the restoration of electricity, but downed poles and fallen trees, that requires bringing in more help, and the damage was much than was expected. I realize that this "puts them into a bind", but showing patience and not hostility helps considerably. Where I am at, the power was off a week during Hurricane Rita in 2005 and Ike in 2008, so that we "made the best of what we could".

CP made $6.7 billion in profits but did not upgrade their failing infrastructure. Now they have requested federal funds to do so. Texas is the only state to leave the national grid system, as a result, it’s the worst state for power outages in the country. CP failed to have proper crews staged in appropriate areas ready as soon as storm was over, they only had a small number staged, instead they said the forecast was wrong and the storm wasn’t suppose to hit Texas, which is BS, I watched the forecast, it was headed right for them, we all knew it for days.
