State and local officials must submit a request for a federal disaster declaration solely at the discretion of the president. Once the president declares Houston and other areas a disaster area, then federal funds are disbursed to those areas for cleanup and other necessary services. The lieutenant governor is correct. The next year the regional electric utility did a massive amount of tree clearance around power lines. In the succeeding years it has really helped. Might be a good start for y'all. All the best to you.

You’ll perish on day 1 trying to live on beans and rice in 90 degree heat. You need real food which is why people were out looking for it. Also there won’t be enough gas for all those generators. That’s supposed to be a short term fix. This is Day 5. For an outage this long, ppl have to evacuate but we couldn’t. It’s a Cat 1, so no one was off work and there was no contra flow.

I have all of that and now I’m second guessing my own preparations 😂! I have a 4,500 watt generator, 3,000 watt power station, everybody has their own personal power station, and 50 gallons of extra gas. I think I need to look into solar power and/or save to have a whole house generac hooked up to the house. If I was in Texas I’d be suffering when I run out of gas! My generators have saved me SO many times but that’s because the power always comes back on after 3 days at the most. I’ve never been tested for a week with my plans. I even fill my freezer with ice for the food so I don’t have to hook it up to the generator too long.

The residents are more important than business, but business is still very important. Aside of them not having enough trucks ready, it was reported that Centerpoint spends very little on vegetation management and now fallen trees are a major contributor to the current power outages. the small business should invest in Solar panels and some batteries... at least enough to run the fridges.... its not expensive..

Solar panels and Batterys are good for residential applications (low load). It doesn't work like you mentioned for commercial application. They need a big ass generator to run the restaurant load.

@@rezinxd1 “at least enough to run the fridges….” and the context is during an outage to keep their food from going bad. + it’s about how much load you need to power, not if the place is commercial or residential.. What I said above is feasible, relatively affordable, and should be a looked into.

I work with refrigeration (walk in freezers, walk in Coolers etc) and generators. Trust me, solar panels are not made for this.

They can run for a while on solar panels, but the problem is the amount of food that needs to be stored in a refrigerated area. Since the restaurant owners know the Gulf Coast weather is unpredictable, they should definitely invest in a generator.

Lol. The same hurricane hit several other states and they aren’t seeing millions of people without power. Maybe your politicians sold you out to corporate interests while they took away your ability to replace them.

I don’t live in Texas, but I’ve been through a lot of power outages. The transformer that feeds my house feeds one other. We’re at the end of the line. If there’s only nine of you, without power, you are at the end of the line, you’re last on the list. Doesn’t matter how long you’ve been without power, they will fix the problems that will bring 10+ people back online before you. Very frustrating. You may need to consider a back up generator and/or solar with a battery back up. All the best to you and your family.
