Who REALLY Started WWI - Animated History w/MrBettsClass

Could an obscure Archduke really be the reason for the Great War? Of course not. It might have been the scratch but the itch happened half a century earlier with the Franco-Prussian War and Otto von Bismarck's quest to unify Germany.

Franz Ferdinand had a younger brother named Archduke Otto. Otto predeceased Ferdinand by eight years, dying of syphilis in 1906. After Franz Ferdinand was killed, his brother's son, Karl, became the new heir to the Austro-Hungarian Throne. When Emperor Franz Joseph died in 1916, Karl became the last Emperor of Austria-Hungary. After the Empire fell in 1918, Karl was exiled to Switzerland before forcibly being transported to the island of Madeira in 1921. He died of Spanish Flu the next year. His son, Otto von Habsburg, was the last Crown Prince of Austria, and the head of the House of Habsburg until his death in 2011. The current head of the House of Habsburg is Otto's son, Karl von Habsburg.

Bismarck wanted to unhinge London's system of "balancing out" the remaining 4 continental European powers... www.britannica.com/topic/balance-of-power ...with and alternative alliance in Central and Eastern Europe (Eurasia) which had existed since 1815... en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Concert_of_Europe A tricky attempt, since relations between Berlin-Vienna, and Berlin-St Petersburg were good, but relations between Vienna and St Petersburg sucked... Wilhelm wanted to end the grip London had over war or peace on the continent, and one which would always result in Central Europe (which incl. Germany) taking the brunt of damage or losses in case of wars, with and alternative scenario. A NWO based on an alliance between London and Berlin, which already had good historical and traditional relations. His attempts to nudge London out of their comfort zone failed.

    1. I just must say, this video was one of the best I have ever seen. Made me laugh, it learnt me something new (about the assasination in Sarajevo) and the drawing had great quality. 2. I also loved how Mr. Beat appeared. I thought it was his voice, but wasn't totally sure before you said it. 3. I wouldn't say Bismarck's unification led to the great war thoe. Basically to sumarize his policies form 1871-1890 was to build up Germany domestically and to geopolitical isolate France. The ''Dreikaiserverbund'' only ended when Bismarck wasn't there to advocate for it to be extended. I mean, if he had stayed in power a few more years (until he died) it could have been enough for Tsar Nikolai II to not ally with France. And Bismarck would probably try to lowering, if not completely stop, the naval arms race with England. Not wanting them to seek closer ties with France and not seeing a reason for Germany, with litterary 7 basically useless and resourceless colonies, having to have one of the greates navies in the world. But then again, you say that it's the unification of Germany that in the long run led to the great war, not Bismarck's policies. With this I do agree. The formation of Germany really shifted the power vacuum of Europe, and made a new war with even larger scales then the Napoleonic wars more plausible, but I wouldn't say inevitable. I could see Europe remaining peaceful for another century tbh. But then again there are other factors to take into account. Russia's great expansion to the east was also something to worry about. So was the USA and its increasing powers. The sick men of Europe, Austria-HUngary and the ottoman empire, and the russian bear becoming more and more imperialistic and hostile. And we have China too, which could also easily start an european war from Asia, with sidening with Germany. But yeah, the german unification was a major factor to the great war.

  • @thebabylonian109

Indeed. If we go with the hypothesis that the establishment of a German nation in some form was seen as inevitable by the 1840-50s, it could even be argued that Bismarck actively prevented WWI from starting 40 years sooner than it did. In the end he had too much faith in the Prussians monarchy, faith that was betrayed by Wilhelm II.

England had already allied with France in the Crimean War. No one talks about that. I think it's pretty significant that they were so worried about Russia that they allied after centuries of being enemies and (of course, for several other reasons). Everyone makes it sound like WWI was the first time they joined forces. This is actually the main cause of my fascination with the Crimean War. It seems like a huge shift in a lot of ways (even though it was a "small" war) and nobody wants to talk about it. Anytime people DON"T want to talk about something, I get really curious.

Sarajevo-born, I have to admit this is the best animated piece of history I've come across in a very long time! So funny and informing - there is one more guy, though, a precursor: Count Gyula Andrássy de Csíkszentkirály et Krasznahorka (8 March 1823 - 18 February 1890), a Hungarian statesman, who served as Prime Minister of Hungary (1867-1871) and subsequently as Foreign Minister of Austria-Hungary (1871-1879). He made sure that Bosnia and Serbia don't unite against Austria while trying to get rid of Turkey. It's the cream on top of your 'German salad,' because Andrassy distrusted Slavic nationalist movements as a threat to his multi-ethnic empire. I know it for a fact, as I helped an American history teacher translate a book on the Bosnian uprising, 1875-1878, that never saw the light translated into English because, sadly, she couldn't find a publisher for it.

I know this is an old video. But it’s kinda crazy how many people in the comments keep saying Mr. Betts is full-on blaming Bismarck for WW1 despite it occurring years after his death. 1. A person’s legacy aka decisions can leave deep repercussions, especially a political figure. Julius Caesar was never an emperor but he helped lay the foundations for the Roman Empire for instance. 2. At the end of the video, Mr. Betts straight up says he’s not blaming Germany or Bismarck for WW1, but Germany existing changed and even “set in stone” part of how a World War would play out. And Bismarck was the architect of the German Empire. So he is the reason for a major part of the puzzle.

Also, Otto von Bismarck practically despised the idea of colonies, seeing them as too much hard work. He soon allowed colonies though, and the formation of a Seebataillon (literally sea battalion) which were naval infantry, and their main headquarters was at Kiel. Although Otto von Bismarck was not chancellor during ww1 due to Wilhelm I German colonies in africa and the pacific weren’t getting hardly a any support. Thanks to Lieut. colonel, soon to be Major general Paul Emil von Lettow Vorbeck, countless African and German lives were saved in German East Africa. they mainly totalled to 11,000-14,000 infantry, and beat back 300,000 British, Indian, Belgian and portugese.

Gonna be honest, there are a few mistakes. First, the Austrian empire was a yellow and black flag, Bismarck did not say “liberate Holstein” as he would need a reason to annex Holstein from Austria, and France put up a good fight by standard terms, as several early Franco-Prussian battles were French victories, and Kaiser was not German for Emperor of Germany since the kingdoms annexed by Prussia became like states in the U.S., though overall it was a great Bismarck section.

Tbf bismark was a political juggernaut and the generation of leaders that preceeded the one that started the war were some of the most competent (and bloody) Europe would ever see. The kind of men who could actually manage colonies and alliances and modernisation and all. Europe basically became gondor with a whole slew of unprepared rulers (and Franz josef who was like a million years old and was used to thinking of war in the "glorious" napolionic style) and bismark actually predicted Germays collapse if whilhelm ii stayed in power

One word. Inaccurate flag of Austria Hungary. That is the civil ensign of Austria Hungary. Austria Hungary was a country union of sorts. Cisleithania had the yellow and black flag, the kingdom of Hungary had the Hungarian flag with its royal coat of arms.

That's a stretch... Bismarck's greatest strength was understanding Germany's limitations, aka staying away from multi front wars, something Kaiser Wilhelm II later did not comprehend. I would argue that the seeds for WWI were planted when Wilhem II released Bismarck from his post as Chancellor.

The creation of Germany was always a possibility wether it came by Prussia,Austria or even the slight chance Bavaria since it was a large German state but nowhere near the other two Only with one of the specific two countries being in almost if not full control over the unified Germany could cause such a world power to bloom And the incompetence of napoleon the 3rd and his reign makes me believe at one point as a last desperate chance to gain moral for his reign he could try and annex some of his neighbours most likely the small and easy to take german states to the east (especially the Rhineland) due to its usefulness either way one of the powers if not both would unite in arms to take down the french. Now here I see a few possibilities: Both Austria and Prussia unite in arms to defend the other states: Which leads to seemingly no effect since the Franco-Prussian war is what lead to the southern states to have more empathy to Prussia than Austria with the odd chance that a few more states go to Prussia’s side, after the war Bismarck would most likely did what he did in Schleswig and Holstein mocking the Austrians to try and engage another brothers war but as a last resort if the other states wouldn’t turn to Prussia diplomatically With permission from the kaiser who he could influence easy when it came down to it after the war if they win they could try and just annex most if not all southern german states to form the empire Now if that happened I think that Germany would not ally with Austria Hungary for WWI mostly due to austrian resentment of the Germans being worse due to the multiple backstabs from Prussia in the past. Therefore Germany doesn’t break its ties with Russia and Russia dose not have to ally france out of fear from Germany and its growing power I also believe that the Austrians wouldn’t declare war on Serbia at all now with Serbia being allied to Russia and Russia to Germany and Unless they try and get more allies to help them in this war but I’m not sure how the republic would feel about it. I could go on about this pathway of alternative history but it’s late and I’m tired I’m also starting to think nobody would see this.

Luv it! ❤👍😊 (subscribed) Those who wish to absolve Wilhelm II as well as both the Houses of Hohenzollern and Hapsburg of all blame for WWI usually point the finger at the British for the beginning of WW1 (i.e. the Entente Cordiale and the British royal navy's "bullying") Otto Von Bismark and others within Germany set the stage for WW1 -- That is for sure! I blame not only the ideal of German Lebensraum and militarism, as well a the blowhard, hot-head, Wilhelm II (for irritating and attempting to intimidate British (i.e. the people of the UK, the Royal Navy and the, soon to be, House of Windsor) as well as International Bankers and the armament manufacturers for not only starting WW1 but also for fueling the Bolshevik Revolution
