Meet the House of Habsburg
This video is filled with simplifications and generalizations. It should be regarded as a brief introduction to the vast subject that is the history of the Habsburg dynasty.
The Habsburg dynasty is arguably the most influential of the european royal houses. Vast empires from the danube stretching even to the Americas, whole countries named after their figureheads, such as the Philippines, patronage of artists such as Diego Velázquez and Mozart, all of this are testaments of the mark left by the House of Habsburg on the modern history of our planet.
This video will cover (almost) the entire history of the Habsburgs as kings and emperors of Europe, from their rise as local nobles from Switzerland to their downfall in World War 1, in an oversimplified manner like a casual approach to this vast subject in an animated style.
I hope you enjoy it!
wow this video really took something of 6 months to complete sorry for the delay :)

Fun facts about Otto Von Habsburg. He spoke German, Hungarian, Croatian, English, French, Spanish, Latin fluently as his mother taught him to as she believed that one day he would rule over many lands. He lived much of his childhood in Spain. Otto was a staunch opponent of Naziasm, communism, and nationalism and opposed the Anschluss. Because of this he was even sentenced to death by the Nazis for opposing them. He went into exile in the United States and he helped over 15.000 Austrians including thousands of Austrian Jewish people flee Nazi occupied Austria thus likely saving thousands of lives. He lived to the ripe old age of 98 years old dying in 2011 at 98 years old.

Another fun fact: Had Otto ascended to the Austrian throne, he would have reigned for 88 years.

Why would he oppose nationalism though
@differentbutsimilar7893
3 ай бұрын
@@Komnenos83 Mayhaps because at the time the big nationalists on the block were the Nazis? Honestly, not all nationalism IS bad (though really, if you like democracy, it almost always is because it's a collectivist and monocultural mode of ideology.) I suppose that if your country is being colonized, it's almost vital - though I doubt how well it works out long term. You win, you get peace. People go off in groups. Groups can't agree on what their nation is. In comes more conflict, maybe even civil war. Cultural nationalism isn't QUITE so bad - but that's not really what we are referring to here. The real nasty stuff is state/govt nationalism. However, lets just say there are reasons beyond money and power for why globalism is more the norm now. I mean, the hypernationalist policy of the Japanese govt during WWII was a big part of the moral and ethical justifications for their many atrocities. That was the kind of nationalism Otto was seeing unfold. The nationalism he saw was "Yamato race" or "Jewish question." Just philosophically speaking, when a people's identity merges with that of their nation to a fitting level to be called 'nationalism' I don't see a way for people and nations carrying that nationalist identity to not eventually engage in racial or ethnic discrimination. To have nationalism, you need a fixed idea of what the country and its people are, and you need to hold that ideology to the greatest moral and ethical significance. And when you're Austria, a place with multiple distinct ethnic groups living in it, that's bad. Because eventually there may come a point where people start deciding other groups aren't true Austrians. That's really more what it was - Austria itself was multi-ethnic nation with different states. It was not a nationalist country. The real fear for the Habsburgs when it came to nationalism WITHIN Austria was of factions forming and states rebelling against the government and breaking their empire. Just think about it. Multiple states with different ethnic groups living in them, and all of the sudden they all have their own ideas about what their nation is and should be, what an Austrian is. What could go wrong when different ethnicities living in in directly neighboring states that all share a country start each developing their own idea of what the nation of Austria is and who its for? Never went atrociously ever in history, right?
I have a feeling this channel is gonna go far. A mix of comedy and an entertaining take on history is always appreciated. Keep it up

Fun facts: Franz Grillparzer, a famous Austrian dramatist, wrote a play about the defeat of Ottakar by Rudolph I called Ottakars Glück und Ende (Ottakar's Fortune and End) telling the story of the birth of the House of Habsburg. Which made a sweet gift to the current Hapsburg Emperor Francis II. Also, Austria's productive use of marriage to increase the Hapsburg lands inspired a saying: "Bella gerant alii, tu felix Austria nube." 'Let others wage war: you, happy Austria, marry.'

To be honest, I've fought shy of studying the Habsburgs, as they seemed too complicated (not to mention their 'close relationships' to one another)). But you've laid them out brilliantly and clearly, nice piece of work. Love your style, and look forward to seeing more (college work permitting). Thanks.

Very entertaining with real funny animations! Just one detail, the 1640 crisis in Spain originated because Olivares wanted ALL territories to contribute with men and money to the war. Not only the Spanish territories (Castile, Aragón, etc.), also Portugal, Naples, Sicily, the Duchy of Milan, the Spanish Lowlands, the American territories, etc. This "Union of Arms" would've resulted in a significantly strong army and with sufficient resources, to defy the growing power of Louis XIV of France.
I love this editing style. It’s like if Sam O’ Nella and bill wurtz had a baby. And it’s a masterpiece.
Also, during the Reforma war in Mexico, one of the factions tried to create an empire and invited Maximilian of Habsburg to be the emperor of Mexico. But he lost the war and was executed.

footnote: It was hardly anticipated during the majority of Frederick's reign that his heirs would control the imperial succession for as long as they did. Following Ladislas Posthumus's death in 1457, the Bohemian and Hungarian kingdoms were lost to the Habsburgs for over 70 years; the Swiss borders, which had actually been lost since 1315 (see Switzerland: Expansion and Position of Power), were formally renounced in 1474.

Charles didn't exactly expand the Spanish possessions in the Americas, as more it was more the conquistadors doing it on their own, with Francisco Pizarro leading an expedition by himself to conquer the Incas without any real command from Ferdinand to conquer them. It would have been more accurate to say that Charles also oversaw the expansion of the Spanish colonial possessions in the video.

Viceroyalties* not colonies, the Spanish law (Leyes de Indias, Leyes de Burgos, Las Encomiendas, etc..) from the 16th century from both Isabella La Católica and Carlos I (or V) abolished slavery and discrimination to the natives and encouraged race mixing.
