Guys - I know this was from a solo album and not the police. Had a lot of back and forths with the editing on this one, and didn't want to nitpick. But yea I know Sting's solo stuff is different than the police 🤣

The real deal here is the fact that these covers are all a reference. The genius is authentically coming up with these grooves and transitions. If an artist played these tracks to us with no reference drum track.... what we do? That’s where Vinnie rules.

Agree 100%! It's creativity and imagination that counts more than technique. Technique can be learned and copied; Invention cannot. Most drummers go on and on about Vinnie's technique, but i've always been blown away by hearing him produce one brilliant idea after another; whether it be soloing, playing a tune or playing an entire album. This is what makes him and a handful of others, uncopyable. As far as technique, creativity and imagination go, some are blessed to be in possession of all three and Vinnie is certainly one of those who inhabit such rarified air.

Exactly! The level of understanding of groove required to solve this song in the way vinnie did is mind boggeling. And he plays it so clean like the music just naturally flows out of him. Its like this is as natural for him as a straight 4/4.

One of my favorite albums. I remember the first time I heard Seven Days I worked as a signpainter for Disneyland. It was 5:45 am and the sound crew for Fantastic had it playing for sound check over the Rivers of America on that perfectly still morning. I thought my God what is that. I recognized Stings voice, but was not familiar with the album yet. I have yet to have the same musical experience as that day, Wow! Thanks for your comparison video, great job. I encourage more. I'm 65, been playing since 1964 and am probably # 85 on your list. It's a tough one.

The vhs back in the day had the actual audio from this live session. Vinnie played some truly outstanding fills, more flashy and arguably more tasteful than the album version. Sadly someone decided to use the audio from the album for later releases.

I agree, you made the correct choice of winner, though yes, they were all winners, you included. The winner nailed the nuances, and that is where much of Vinnie's magic sits. You spiced things up nicely. And the young lady approached this with a physical casualness that made her may favourite. Indeed, everyone except her and the final chap seemed so intent on trying to get it 'right' that I was longing for some personality of their own to shine through. Thank you, this was great.

  • @grahamcooper2144

They were all tremendous. But the one that stood out for me was the young lady. Reason? There was a joy and a swing and a sheer swagger in it that made me wanna move - and isn't that what music is about?

I came straight to the comments to make a case for number 3. Her time was not “metronomically” perfect, but hers had something the other 2 did not. And that is personality. Her groove has a hip shake that was fun to listen to. If I was playing bass with her, on a Saturday night gig, in the 3rd set, I would thank my lucky stars to have her there to keep things fun. 10/10 for me!!

Great video! Yea Nick! His was the best of the 6 covers. His timing was impeccable and his technique was on lock! Furthermore, he looked professional, completely relaxed, and commanding as he played the song. He played that song like he OWNED it and had vast intimate experience with it. Truly the best cover of that song that I have viewed and a great choice for the winning entry. That being said, I liked yours even more. I thought that the creative elements that you brought to the table flowed really well with what Vinnie had played in the original and so it worked well as you played it and accented the other instruments expertly. I particularly like the quick double on the crash that seemed to sit somewhere between a flam and 32nd notes. :-) Your artistry on the hats was really nice to see. I enjoy seeing drummers who use their hats for more than just timekeeping. Playing the bridge part with the left hand playing the 32nd notes was really slick also. :-) I also liked your flammed folls near the end and splitting the flames between two surfaces. You had a really relaxed feel and looked confident and comfortable playing it.

Loved it , thank you so much !! All of these drummers were awesome and I liked some things you played yourself , I think the key of this groove and feel besides the execution of the actual groove and fills , is how are you feeling time either as along phrase or a short phrase loops with fills that break that comfort zone but yet still driving you with the same movement of rhythm , I’m sure there is a way to explain it better 😊

Well, I'm watching this a couple of yrs. after its release, but I believe the first two drummers were, the best. The tall, skinny kid did alright, but you can tell the first two were more experienced behind the kit. Its also important to remember that Vinnie Colaiuta is a professional drummer who went to Berkley and created the drum portion of this song at 36. At Stings request, the song is in 5/8 and Vinnie was able to make it palatable to the listener. This is the work of a true professional.

Fascinating. As a mediocre (at best!) bassist, i have watched quite a few of your videos over some time. Always great to see what goes on in the other half of the rhythm section. Lots of interesting points for musicians of any calibre, in general, and not always specific to drumming. Watching these covers, it is so pleasing to see so many fantastic drummers, and as, as i mentioned earlier, as a bassist, there is nothing that makes music so much fun for me, as to play with a really good drummer. Makes me sound and play better, knowing i can rely on my stuff whilst locking in with a someone who can groove. Not going to comment on the relative merits of these drummers, as I would be lucky to get to play with any of them. Keep up the great work!

PS interesting point re arm strength in the 4th clip. I once had the privilege to be standing right behind Bill Bruford who was playing at a demonstration, and was just floored by the range of dynamics he was able to get, from whisper quiet to real volume with absolutely no seeming effort being expended. A joy to watch.

Fair assessments of each cover. Have you ever scoured youtube for all the live Seven Days videos of Vinnie playing it and how differently he approaches the song at every show and how incredibly GOOD every performance of it is?! Like I was actively looking for live clips during the "back to bass" tour and show to show he was usually playing something so wildly different and just absolutely going for it. That song is just so "him," every drummer that's played that song with Sting just doesn't go anywhere near how Vinnie played it on record, let alone playing it with any ferocity he does live.

I think what makes Vinny's the best is he sounds so on top of the beat, the miking is great and the tuning of the drums is great. But the way he hits the hat and the drums - but especially the hat and splashes - really makes his 'rhythmic intention' stand out. He makes every stroke heard, and part of that is probably because they're in the studio, but if somebody wants to cover it they really should be on top of that stuff. Nate could have been better if you could have heard everything and he was a little more muscular and a little more on top of the beat; one certainly gets the opinion from his smoothness that the rhythm is nothing for him. That's a big accomplishment as far as I'm concerned because I screw up playing this unless I'm really really concentrating. Impressive. just my humble opinion of course. I haven't even tried to play this all the way through. If I did though I would keep most if not all of Mr. C's stuff and add embellishments and it would sound bitchin' if what I hear in my head could come out of my hands and feet.😁🙄🤔 I love this song. The energy from it can make me cry these days.

The only one who had Vinnie's feel is drummer # 2, everybody else was too heavy handed and rigid. Vinnie seriously had a whip at the ends of both of his arms on this one. I have a theory about Mr. Colaiuta, goes like this - he killed Jeff Porcaro because no one could tell them apart from more than a few feet away and Jeff was destroying his income by sucking up all the good high pay no-jazz gigs. People would call the studio and book ''That awesome drummer with the glasses I saw there last month'' and then Jeff would show up and say ''Hi, my name's Vinnie. Where's my $1,500?'', then split before Colaiuta loaded in and no one ever knew (except Vinnie, he knew! O.o).

I thought it was all over the place, more like a 7.5 out of 10. Main issue was the constant flam between hats and rim shot.

I think it'd super impressive when someone can nail the parts verbatim, but I like originality more! Rahgav, and nates were the best in that regard. Everyone else killed it, but no originality.

@@8020drummer I wish it would come back, I absolutely loved it!!! Rosanna and Seven Days where great because I remember being frustrated trying to learn them, it was inspiring to see others crush it, it made me want to work harder on the craft!!!!

The first guy is how a drum machine plays Vinnie. My rating 4,2,3,1,5 i rate 3 and 2 above 1 because they have better musicality and the drummers look way more relaxed.

Haha I knew Nick’s going to win as soon as he shows up in the video, followed him long ago because every song he covered is perfectly note for note… he would’ve won the Rosanna cover contest if he was in it too.

Not. Don't be fooled...Nick Molenda's version relies on Vinnie's original audio Check at 0:59, the "ghost rim" when he plays the splashes

Vinnie's drumming on this album was awesome; he made the odd time signatures feel great (aided of course by Sting's composing). At the time, I remember being stunned that this was the same guy who drummed on Allan Holdsworth's Secrets album (as a drummer-loving non-drummer, Vinnie wasn't on my radar at the time)

Great video! Awesome song choice, and really excellent drummers! I think your assessment is spot-on. But can we talk about your cymbals??? Dude, do you need us to set up a GoFundMe for some new ones?

Interesting song to pick for a comparison. I mean to say that if you (a) pick a Vinnie song, and (b) pick a odd time song, you’ve got to have a baseline of talent that’s already impressive. Each drummer played so well, but I agree with your pick. Guy just glided through 5/4 like nothin.

No worries bra, you were spot on in your assessment. I thought you were pretty objective even when grading on something as subjective as feel. Don't get too worked up about the p.o.v. of the critic_ it is a healthy barometer for folks to work with when done correctly.
