Out of all the explanations of the gasp I think I like the breaking the 4th wall one where it’s Eliza seeing the audience and realizing we are all hearing their story. She said that she would have multiple reasons for the gasp. From a Variety interview she added that the theory about Eliza breaking the fourth wall was accurate, and she would “look out and see all these beautiful faces and acknowledge that story we had all taken a ride to witness.”

A theory that I like is that when Hamilton walks behind Eliza, he is stepping out of character. From that point on he's no longer Hamilton, but he is now Lin. Lin is showing her that she succeeded in telling Alexander's story. This also ties into the theory that Eliza's gasp at the end is her finally being able to see the impact that she (and Alexander) had and is seeing the audience for the first time.

actually, Lin said that this changes from Eliza to Eliza. Some of the actress said she imagine Eliza seeing heaven and all her loved ones (her sisters, her son, her husband). Some says exactly what you've said: Li is showing to Eliza that her story was told and was important. But there is not a single answer about it ;)

Phillipa Soo will always be my favorite part of Hamilton. She and Lin are the ones we get to see really, really act, and honestly, she’s just head and shoulders ahead of him on stage. No hate to Lin; he’s a creative genius and a damn good actor. But you can’t beat that classically trained voice and her emotion.

It’s mind boggling the Lin -Manuel wrote that piece. I think some roles are written for certain people in life. She has everything, all of the complexities of the character are wrapped up in this piece. She evolves into a courageous woman, and, still maintains her shy, tender qualities. I see a deep well of strength in her capacity to forgive and champion an imperfect man who did so much to build up and destroy. That is the true power of love. When she says “…in their eyes I see you Alexander..” her timing and subtle movements are so intimate. It speaks volumes of what she really saw in him that most of would never understand. It’s what a mother sees in her child that the child can’t see in himself. Mrs. Soo blows this away. It chilling and brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it. Even her imperfections (not the strongest voice) brings depth and authenticity to the Character. Out of the shadows she ponders, “when my time is up, have I done enough, will they tell my story?” “Oh, I can’t wait to see you again”. Wow! Every human being poses that question to himself, and longs for someone dear that has gone on. Thanks for posting and your review. You have great energy. Loved it!!

and the insanity of depth to the writing. Eliza's been singing "would that be enough" to Hamilton at times, to Hamilton, after their son's death saying, if he can see her smile again, "that would be enough", finally putting family before legacy. and then to Eliza finally understanding Hamilton's legacy and say, "have i done enough, will they tell my story". To the finale with Eliza seeing the audience and got the answer that, yes, her story has been told. the tears... another tidbit that perhaps i might over analyze. in this song, pay attention to when the word "time" is mentioned. it is being used as different context: legacy, determination, opportunity, death. For example, when Angelica and Eliza harmonize, "she was right on time" - this represents love and death in one instance. As in Angelica was always there for Eliza and then also after they finish the "time" word, the light shone on Angelica fades away.. like death. Also, when Eliza ends with "only a matter of time" you hear a bell sound.. like a toll.

Her gasp is about watching her legacy being shown to her and told to the world by Lin Manuel. The emotions flow when seeing it all together and the extent of it. A true moment of full paroxysm.. we all gasped and held our breath with Eliza.

The last part of the song when Eliza gasps always makes me sob. I was confused the first time I watched it but the second time I realized that at that point Lin wasn’t playing Hamilton, he was playing himself. Eliza was still Eliza but Alexander was Lin and he was leading Eliza up to the front of the stage and showing her that he told her story.

You should react to “du måste finnas” (Swedish version) by Helen Sjöholm in the musical Christina from Duvemåla (written by Björn and Benny from ABBA). It’s so powerful and she is amazing! 🙌

Brilliant acting choice--when Eliza sings about speaking out against slavery, you see Christopher Jackson behind her hanging his head in shame. Jackson did a lot of not just research but soul-searching when he played Washington, and that acting decision was likely a byproduct of that.

A small suggestion, a constructive criticism really. I get you're doing the technical theory. Thats the purpose of the videos. However, it can be really jarring when you pause mid-phrase. It doesn't take much to just put it back a little each time you pause so the whole phrase can be listened to and the technique you've described can be seen. Just a small thing but would just make it even closer to perfect.
