These guys were massive when this first came out. I still can't believe a rock/punk band could have members that are almost certified geniuses. Dexter's background is crazy. One of those bands where even 30 years later I know all the lyrics to all their songs.

You wouldn’t tell from some of their music, but these guys are academics. The lead singer actually has a PhD in Molecular Biology. They started in college, played for their school’s radio, and landed mainstream success.

This song was a haven when I lost my father almost 15 years ago. It has sadness, anger, and a sliver of hope rolled into one. He was 54 years old, so I definitely felt like he was taken before his time.

My Dad was 59. Nearly 5 years now. Hurts every day but music brings some peace.
So many good songs in The Offspring's catalog.
The Offspring were EXTREMELY influencial to my teen years. I was a shy outcast angsty teen and really channeled a lot of frustration listening to their music. I delt with anxiety, depression, etc. I was introduced through the album Smash (Gotta Get Away is still prob my #1 favorite song of theirs!). But I quickly discovered Ignition and their self titled album. All classics (to me at least). I've appreciated their later stuff as I've grown older. All their albums are good imo. Please react to Gotta Get Away! (I happen to like the official video that goes with it as well.)

Dude, same. Gotta Get Away is definitely one of my top-3 as well, but Gone Away is #1.
This song came out around the time my mom died, I played this song everywhere I went!
This has been one of my favorite Offspring songs since I was a kid, but it hits me like a truck now that i lost my mom a couple months ago. It’s already a tragic, beautiful song about mourning someone you love and can’t imagine life without, and relating it to my mom, who was like my best friend makes it almost too painful to listen to now. But it is very cathartic in a way as well, so i am thankful that the song exists in the first place.
This song hits in a way that most never do. Once I found out what it was about it made it have a much more lasting impact. Years have past and its still like a kick in the gut.
Seen Offspring last October, he played this on piano.
Grew up with Offspring. Class band. Good going getting some exposure to them.
Love The Offspring! One of my fav concert moments was this song. At Red Rocks, while it was raining, Dexter played this solo on a grand piano. Absolutely fantastic!
If I could like the video twice, I would. Best reaction I've found to one of the absolute best Offspring songs.
Off spring was basically a Grunge / punk rock band in the 90's that became more mainstream late 90's and early 2000's. They've always been one of my favourites since i blasted their first few albums in my first Truck and still get in the mood to listen to their stuff today.

not wrong actually they are a rock band
This brings me back to Highschool. I’ve always enjoyed this band
This song never ceases to make me cry. 2 years ago, my best friend got killed, he was pushed off of a cliff, and I watched him fall to his death. I still haven't come to terms with it, but there are 2 songs that remind me of that moment. Gone Away helped immensely ease the pain, especially with why Dexter wrote it, if you go into that story. But the other song was Hysteria by Def Leppard, as that was the song that was on the radio as I drove as fast as I could to the police station searching for help.
Love The Offspring. Fond memories from another time.
Sloan, I would gladly trade places. I miss you and love you wherever you are.
This song kills most of the crap coming out now!! Dam I was 26 when this came out now I'm 52 ,keep rocking👍
i cant deal, its so unfair. the mic slipping out of his hand i think represents the bond with your lost loved one as time pulls you farther and farther away. at least that how it feels to me.
Offspring Smash one of the best albums ever recorded. Love it to this day.
I played this song ad nauseam when I got the album back in the day, what a throwback!
This song takes me back every time, one of my mates took his life & this was out at the time & it made sense.
gotta check out the piano version. its beautiful
Solid rock band from 90s
This song has eased a few deaths for me!
Im 31. I heard this song for the first time that i can consciously remember at 9. The evolution of the lyrics on top of the vibrational frequency has truley changed my life.... it has taken on so many different meanings for me! Now as a grown man when i hear this song it brings tears to my eyes..
Love The Offspring. I see them every time they come to OC or near
One of my childhood favorite bands, an oldie but a real goodie 😁🤘
Offspring is amazing band. All albums is good🤘
Another great reaction I like this song by either them or Five Finger Death Punch each has its own appeal I remember when this came out the kind of music in my wheel house although a little more punk side still a good rock song and enjoyable to the ears as always your ride or die Forever thanks for the fun ride Eyyyy Oooo
"Can't Repeat" released as a single for their greatest hits album is definitely worth a listen 🖤
Thank you for doing the original. Everyone else uses the garage ffdp
i've lost both my biologigal parent, 20 and 45 years ago... i play this song on regular basis, and its so fitting!
When I was 21 my best friend was killed in a motor cycle crash. We played this song at the funeral. His mom was not sure she should let me pick because she had never liked our music. After playing it she said she understood and was glad I talked her into playing it. I still cry every time it plays and I am in my 50s.

Great reaction Rosalie! The Offspring, when I got into them in the 90's, with their third album Smash, would bebwhat I'd call 'surf grunge', but their origins were in hardcore punk. This album had fun tracks like: Come Out and Play, Gotta Get Away, Bad Habit, but they already showed some songs with meaning (lyrically) with Self Esteem. They always seemed to keep the grunge/punk vibe. This track certainly showed a more serious side to their songwriting. Now for a track that's completely opposite to serious, you should check Pretty Fly (For a White Guy)!!

Oh jeez, all favourites when I was a teen. 👌
still one of my favourite Offspring songs, sound of my youth
From the album "Ixnay on the Hombre"!
For a long time they didn't disclose the source of the song. Finally they said where it came from. Apparently the singer and his wife were in a store and there was a drive by shooting, with people shooting into the store. I think he said that it made him think, 'what if my wife was killed in this event?' and that led to the song. It's a great song. Touches a lot of people.
From what I understand, Dexter wrote this song about his girlfriend at the time getting killed in a car accident.

I just did a quick search, dunno if it's correct of course.... What is the story behind the song Gone Away by the Offspring? The track was reportedly inspired by a real life incident in which singer Dexter Holland and his wife were shaken up after having to seek cover when an ice cream shop they were patronizing was riddled with gunfire by gang members.

This song is for grandma And grandpa And my dog All lost within the same year. The song came out shortly after.
You need to react to the 2021 version of this song. Dexter stripped it back to a grand piano and his vocals, and it was perfectly timed for the pandemic.
My favorite band, I have a few offspring tattoos! Gone Away is the most beautiful song of all time ❤️ they have another song called end of the line which is my favorite by them.
I bought "Ixnay on the Hombre" which is the album this song is on. I actually bought the album for the last track which is titled "Change the World" because it was the end credits song for an anime I watched and I really liked the song. The whole album is great and has many great tracks on it. From "Disclaimer" to "Change the World" I love listening to it.
One of the biggest bands of the 90s and 2000s. Better than Green Day imo.
I can't right now.
In an interview, Dexter said he wrote this song almost immediately after nearly being killed in a drive by shooting while shopping at a store with his wife.
This song just hits you
Ich erinnere mich an einen Hit aus meiner Jugend: "Pretty Fly (For A White Guy)"
Noodles is an original member.
I Would... Its hard to lose those you love and define depending on circumstances i would take your place. To save my pain and yours Such a powerful song and sung at an all out wail. The band's newer slower version is like when maybe you have come to terms
Hi Rosalie, got the perfect reaction for you. Sara Beth, the American Idol contestant that recently dropped out to be back home with her kids. She dropped her first original and it doesn't seem to be getting the traction it should. Its great. Its called Last October. I'd greatly appreciate a reaction. Check out the backstory!! Thanks!
To me another perfect example where initially the music seems to contradict the message of the song. If you don't pay attention to the lyrics this might as well be your ordinary typical rock song with some punk elements and a very catchy hook. But that's also why I love music so much. It has the power to accentuate your feelings. If you're hurt or full of joy there's always the right song to channel or express your mood and emotions!
They actually did a remake of this song very recently. A toned down piano version. You should check that version out. It's really great.
Just another great OC band. So many great bands have come out of the Fullerton/Garden Grove/HB area. Too many to name.
You said something in your review that actually is one of the things that I've had the hardest time getting past in my Grief. I lost my wife to cancer nine years ago. She was 36. Since then I've bounced through all the stages of grief several times. But as you said I am not alone in this and that is what bothers me most of all. Several friends of mine have more recently lost their partners way too soon. You try to help as best you can because you've been there but at the same time, sometimes I just get furious at the whole cruelty of the universe. I mean if have to go through this loss, why should they have to do it too? What's the point of suffering this pain just to see it repeated again and again in others? "It's so unfair!" is such an apt quote in that song. As bad as it's been for me I would suffer without complaining if it meant nobody else had to do the same. It seems so unfair that anyone else should, as ridiculous as that sounds.
FFDP has a really good cover of this song that is impacful because it's about losing those in the military. ❤😊
"Who is The Offspring" that's hilarious.
The hurt & the healer by MercyMe is a great song about the grieving process
I’d have to recommend youth of the nation by POD unless you already done that one.
I always figured someone who writes songs for Offspring was a therapist or went to a therapist for a while, it's just the language he uses particularly in songs like Self-Esteem. It's that "therapyeese ", I'm sure you'll know what I mean.
You're gonna go far kid is a fun one too
Rocking performance. Sad lyrics. Though a different genre, it reminds me of "Visiting Hours" by Ed Sheeran.
Song is more the anger/desperation of begging for them to come back

I always wanted to cover the song but it’s so hard because the vocals are so hard to copy
I like this sooooo much better then the Five Finger remake. (Cover) The story behind the meaning of this song is a pretty messed up story. It is out there on YT if anyone wants to hear if from the man himself.
The Kids Aren't Alr ight and Pretty Fly For a White Guy are also awesome by The Offspring ❤
This is more of an alt rock song but they are actually a pioneering punk rock band from the 90s revival. They have sold a ton of records
Five Finger Death Punch did an awesome cover of this song
Pease please could you try this experiment in a video: Listen to the Staind song "Break" off Tormented. Its a heavy metal song from their early days. Hang in there and pay attention to the lyrics. Then listen to "So Far Away" by Staind. Wow what a transformation!!!
Hi greedings from overseas.. Try some very strange stuff for Americans.. 🤔🎸German Rock... So... :"Jennifer Rostock - Kaleidoskop" /or/.. :"Die toten Hosen - mehr davon, live, Hals und Beinbruch" (long title, but watch what Th, singer, s did at this gig😮☠️) Enjoy another language
The sound of my childhood. Not sure what I think about the Five Finger Death Punch cover, though I will say the musicianship and arrangement are more to my liking. But I have mixed feelings, being a veteran. Still, the original is what I grew up with, and you rocked the reaction. As a side note, considering your journey, if no one has mentioned them, you should definitely take a look at Heilung. Anoana is probably the smoothest intro. In Maidjan is a bit longer.

@@py_a_thon I have my moments where I sit back and think on it way to much . I’ve slowly become more able to control my thoughts of guilt . I’m not sure if you are a believer in god. The night before surgery I spoke to god , asked not for forgiveness. That I wanted to apologize for the wrong doings I had done in my life and I hope that all the good things I’ve done for my community out weight the wrongs I have done . If my lungs fail to draw breath so be it. I was open and accepting to the chance that I may have passed away. The one thing I remember is speaking with my friends who are dead . They passed away a couple years before my diagnosis and surgery date. It felt real to me by smell , sight , and even physical touch . My mind , body , and spirit were whole not separated apart. I spoke to them letting them I would be joining them soon . Next thing I do remember from that moment are my eyes opening and hearing everyone in the operating room yelling , oh my god we got him back . Thank his we got Chris back . Over and over and over again , it still plays over in my head !
