Who Is Really To Blame For Grocery Prices?
Across Canada people have chosen to boycott Loblaws owned stores in protest to rising grocery prices. Despite posting record profits, Loblaws and the other big grocery chains say that they are not gouging food prices, and their margins on groceries are actually quite small.
So who is telling the truth? Why are grocery prices so high? And will a boycott of Loblaws stores actually result in lower prices? We answer those questions and more in this episode.

Food processors and manufacturer profits have far outpaced the profits of the grocery retailers. Some, like Heinz, have seen profits increases of 700% to 800% in recent years. The US grocery store profits has remained fairly stable. This video also looks at dollar profits when it should look at percentage increase.
I mean the CEO is going to make a bonus of 10 billion dollars this year.... But the prices are out of our control... WTF..
There isnt a single grocery item on the shelves that reflect the prices they were 1yr ago. To make matters worse, the BoC sees inflation as a problem (ie, high food prices) then respond by raising interest rates to bankrupt people out of their homes. We're genuinely fkd. Why? Cause while the problem is economics and the lack of regulation of the free market, the average Canadian lobbies on behalf of corporate power (unions are bad, regulation is bad, govt social programs are bad, so on and so on), worse they simply cant think about or even articulate what the actual fk the problem is so blame immigrants for their economic hardships.
8:48 You forgot to mention that Jagmeet’s brother is a lobbyist for Metro. Great video!! Thank you for the comprehensive and objective explanation.
Sobeys and Loblaws are locked it what is called Cooperatition. The telecom argument doesn't make sense because it is not normally bound by geography, your choice is usually 5, regardless of where you live. Loblaws can't cut their way out of this with a few part-time workers, and if it was truly a 1 to 1 relationship, then these people could just move to other grocers.
The government will never do anything to serve Canadians. Grocery stores are not the only issue when it comes to profiteering. There are many issues involved. Carbon tax is not helping, however it is not the sole issue. This is bigger than we know...

Carbon taxing is a wealth transfer program.
And this is why more folks ought to avoid living in car dependent suburb. You depend too much on big corporations like Loblaws for basic needs. In mixed use areas built before WW2, there are still many small grocers, bakeries, meat markets, farmers markets and family owned grocery stores.

Immigrant stores have opened all up our main street and I"ve cut my grocery bill in half by shopping there. Better products as well. Not the same shit from four different corporiations.

This video never mentions inflation. As in the Candian government's creation of new Canadian dollars out of thin air. Not one time. And that, my friends, is "lying by omission".

Wait, so your telling me endless printing of money causes inflation aka a silent tax for the government, paid by citizens and non citizens alike.

You do know that private, highly profitable chartered banks in Canada also have the power to create money out of thin air, too, don't you, in the form of credit? All levels of government and private corporations can issue bonds, which is also a form of money creation. Just because the B of C can tell the Canadian Bank Note Company to rev up the presses does not mean it has a total monopoly on money creation.
More and more people are growing their own gardens now for this exact reason. Grocery prices have gone too far. I find us going to H&W Produce and the Italian center more these days as they have great prices on produce. Also looking into CSAs.

@@silvianosanchez8430that’s not even remotely true. They can charge whatever they want because they are monopolies. Canadians created these monopolies because they are anti-American.
@1:50 Carbon Tax impact "although not nearly as much as some would have you believe"... OK how much? Yiu magically quoted a 12% figure on the Ukraine war effect. Everything comes by truck. @2:17 gross profit with nominal figures. Not adjusted for inflation. After adding 40% more money to the supply you cant compare 2015 dollars with 2022 dollars -- they're simply not the same measure of currency. You must adjust for inflation. @2:50 how about analysis of the fixed absorbed overhead of retail space and labour, contrasted with the sales of clothing and makeup? @7:07 several companies is not a monopoly. It is an oligopoly, but it would be hard to argue this is the case. @6:36 the pie graph shows 5 companies making up the whole market when this isnt true. Research indicates that the 5 companies make up between 70-80% of the total grocery market, so there are dozens of other players in the 20%. This is the Pareto Principle on demonstration, man. 80% of the companies have 20% of the revenue. You make it look like the 6800 independent stores and regional chains dont exist and thats inaccurate. @6:55 Where is the analysis of what the competition bureau did about aggregation over the last 30 years. Perhaps an analysis of this and why government would succeed now vs then in regulating the aggregation to Pareto distribution. @8:43 Where is the talk about the lobbyist brother of the leader of the NDP who leaves out one specific chain fat too often? Wow how do you miss that? @8:53 The video suggests that the government could fix things by 'cappint prices'. The last thing i want from my government is supplying food and screwing with prices. Have you researched Trudeau Sr's experiments on price and wage controls?
Will you do a video on the carbon tax? I'd very much like to see your analysis on it!
Lablaws was kicked out of Alberta because they tried the same thing but hid their name under superstore 😂
Loblaws is up just under 6% since May so far.... so .....
I shop where I can afford food and it’s more expensive to shop at No Frills where I live than Sobeys - let that sink in. Walmart is the cheapest and I don’t care if it’s unionized or not. I have to eat .
Aldis we save at least 35 percent over any other store .

Inflation causes prices to rise. Who dictates inflation? The banks raise interest. Then everbody raises prices to compensate. Forgot to mention the covid circus and realtors and developers flippin real estate. Oh and airb+b. Can you think of more reasons? I pass the baton to you.
