Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
In today's video, I talk about the work of London based Indian-Nigerian fashion designer Priya Ahluwalia. I talk about everything from her cultural references from Jamaica, England (London), Nigeria & India to her book projects like Sweet Lassi and Jalebi. I also briefly touch on her Guccifest fashion film titled "Joy."

I had many people message me over the past few weeks to bring back the "Who Is" series on fashion designers. Let me know if you enjoy these long-form looks into the work of designers and who you want me to cover next.

Yes I love these, would you ever do past designers like Elsa Schiaparelli?
@FashionRoadman

@@DP-gr7ko currently working on more up and coming designers but it would be good to add another series where I talk about the important designers of the past. Names like Mary Quant, Elsa Schiaparelli, Paul Poiret etc come to mind when thinking of designers I’d want to put in that series.

The second hand trade from the western (USA and Europe) not only impacts the environmental safety of african countries but also their economies in the sense where it comes very cheap affecting the promotion and development of the local textile industry, industrialization, the local labour skills development and therefore their GDPs. In 2016, the East African Community( South Sudan, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi) decided on phasing out/banning those second hand clothes imports by 2019(by increasing the tarrifs on imported used clothes for example) to boost the manufacturing industry of those countries...it didn't come to surprise when the US governments issues to sanction those countries if they'd pursue to execute that decision. Currently the Rwandan government, the only one that pursued to act on that 2016 common decision is facing trading sanctions from the US through the "Trump trade war'".

Awesome, making patchwork cohesive and aesthetically pleasing is way harder than it looks...

The imagery is so beautiful.
The closing note on her being labelled as a "sustainable designer" is so important to me because I want to pursue quite the same path in terms of materials to use and tecniques and I too believe sustainability should be integral in the design process for a fashion brand and not just one of the "labels" that describe it. Thanks Ayo!
Since no one talked about this in the comments ( as far as I could see ) my hands are itching to talk about the second hand clothing Industry india. I'm a fashion and knitwear designer from India and sustainability being so big in the world right now, all individuals keen in fashion in india are resorting to thrifting a lot more than before. I didn't know about panipat but the very famous Sarojini market in Delhi, the street markets in Mumbai and the Hong Kong and Shangri la markets in Nagaland, amongst numerous others have always had the donated second hand clothing of first world countries be dumped here in a developing country. Moreover in the marketplace of North East India , a lot of counterfeit products from China ( that looks almost identical to the real deal ) make their way. The second hand market plus even factory surplus from all the manufacturers that do production for big brands all ove the world is huge. It also leads to a lot of waste generation in samples. Which is all sold in specific local markets
Mind blown 🤯. The name “The Fashion Archive” suits you! In love with Priya now! Great job!
Really appreciate you broadening the scope on other designers that’s out there

It’s always been my thing. Never liked that the fashion press talk about the same designers over and over again. At some point it gets boring.
I can attest to all you said about Nigeria. Was born there, grew up in the South, went to work in Lagos and lived there for years. I remember how my mum used to buy second hand clothes from the market. Like how you educate with your channel, keep it up.
Very insightful, previously haven't heard of her before. She really does embody the UK migrant cultural influence in her work which is refreshing to see!

Best way I could explain it is “cultural explosion” haha. It’s sad she isn’t pushed more because most of fashion media talks about the same brands over and over again. Hopefully she gets her big break sooner than later.

Love how in depth your analyses usually are. Great job always.
Your hat must be the most beautiful thing I've seen today. Haven't heard of Ahluwalia before, but after watching your video, I'm definitely a fan. I find it fascinating how she manages to blend distinct subcultural references together as well as the 1960's sentiment. Also thanks for shedding light on some of Nigerian and Punjabi history in the UK. I found this video very insightful and not only in terms of fashion.
Ahluwalia was a great designer to bring back the ‘who is’ videos 🔥 and hopefully there’s a Grace wales Bonner one in the works 💯

Thank you for sharing! I've seen so many people judge the "quality" of the designers' works merely based on the visual aspects. Contents like this are necessary so that the cultural references and the designer's thoughts&skills could be known. We can see how everything comes into being. It also makes a great example that fashion is much beyond garments and accessories but the culture and authenticity behind them...
First time hearing about her! Her work is so vibrant and pretty :)

Thank you so much for this video I am deeply inspired, I love her so much, this is my first time meeting her
I love long form videos. Such great info and depth of analysys. When you mentioned Ahluwahlia looking through family photo albums, I remembered that section at Fashioning Masculinities exhibition that was just so cool. I lust after your book collection;) so thank you for always mentioning and showing the books. Idea: video tours of the different subculture areas of London, like grouped by designers.. or historical eras like Punk. As you do it already for research into designers, it feels like another natural journalistic step. Your thoughts?

One of my favorite video on the channel, like how you dig into the references I would have just completely not seen at all, that's how fashion brings some storytelling to the table, and there is also some great craftsmanship. it looks like Priya AHLUWALIA has found a great balance in her designs, definitely gonna follow her work now, thanks for the discovery !

I personally am a huge fan of Ib Kamara and have been for many years as he graduated from my school on the same course a few years back. I actually look more at the work he does with brands like Thebe Magugu and Louis Vuitton which is stuff he does more frequently and seems to have more creative control. The most impressive thing about IB is the fact he sometimes gets props and garments made specifically for a shoot.
