    I agree that he is at his best in the No.6 position rather than the No.8. United should look to sign two midfielders for next season. Ideally someone athletic who can drive forward through midfield, as well as someone with a similar profile to Mainoo who can compete and rotate with him, but also play alongside him at times. Mainoo is only 18 and has one EPL start. United need to balance out giving him game time to develop, with not over playing him. A lot of the players who start twice a week at the highest level from the age of 18 often suffer burn out and pick up injuries regularly in their late 20's/early 30's. For me signing BOTH Khephren Thuram and André give United the right balance of options without breaking the bank. Leaving funds available for a CB maybe two, a ST/RW option and possibly an upgrade on one of AWB or Dalot.

    AJ, I believe we already have that player in our academy. I believe Dan Gore is that player, a proper 8, he can play both 6 and 8. He's the next Paul Scholes. Gore ticks all the boxes, I know he's a smaller guy, but he has quality in his game.

    I agree on what type of profile is probably the best partner to Mainoo. Maybe Amrabat could be a decent fit for that type of profile. I think we haven't really seen the full potential of him yet. But he needs to step his game up or he'll most likely go back to Italy in the summer. McTominay ticks the "off the ball" boxes but doesn't offer much in terms of buildup. But for certain games he can do a job next to Mainoo. At lest for the rest of this season. Plus he obviously knows how to find the net, which is a big plus considering how much our forwards have struggled with scoring goals.

    There is no perfect option. As you say all players come with a drawback as none are great at everything. I agree that ideally you want physical player who's strong and athletic who is also more of a ball carrier than a passing metronome. For me midfielders in the modern game need to be press resistant, and able to dribble through a press to create space. Short and medium passing need to be good, but you don't tend to get the space in midfield to open up and hit a long range pass, also if you are playing in a ball dominant or high pressing team then your midfielders will tend to be higher up the pitch so won't need to hit longer passes. That accurate long range passing is now more the job of the centre backs. Onana is a good option, but I'm not convinced by his passing. It's functional but lacks guile and creativity. I think he is too defensive and not creative enough for a top side. Teams that challenge for titles need players who contribute well to all phases of play. You can't afford to have passengers to compete at the top. He will also be very expensive, 50m plus maybe approaching 70m. That is just what you have to pay for EPL proven players now, look at the fees paid for Rice and Caicedo as examples. I actually think you mentioned the perfect player but kind of skipped over him. Khephren Thuram is probably the best option available. Tall, strong, athletic, eats up ground as you say, phenomenal ball carrier (similar to Yaya Toure), yet is surprisingly technical for someone his size, much better with his passing and has a great shot on him. His downsides are that he can be a little slow on the turn (common issue for taller, broader players), and his defensive anticipation can sometimes be lacking (he seems to switch off). That could be because he lacks concentration, or it could be that he finds the game a little too easy in France. In the EPL, with it's quicker pace and end to end nature that might focus his mind and stop that happening. Or maybe he's slightly slower cognitively and he'd get caught out more. Unfortunately impossible to know until he plays in the EPL. Some players thrive, others struggle in the EPL. The other good thing with Thuram is that he wouldn't break the bank, probably no more than 40m at most. Maybe less given that the owners of Nice will soon own part of Manchester United. United need two midfielders in the summer. Donny will leave, Eriksen will be another year older and need to play less minutes, while Casemiro might well look to leave, as will McTominay most likely. So it doesn't make sense to spend big on just one midfielder. While I don't like comparing the two, maybe take a leaf out of Liverpool's book. Rather than spend all their budget on Bellingham this summer they brought in Mac Alister, Gravenberch, Endo and Szoboszlai and while none of them are anywhere near as good as Bellingham, Liverpool are a stronger side for signing the four of them. United should look to bring in Khephren Thuram AND André to give them more options and more quality in midfield. André would be a metronomic passer, very press resistant and would be an excellent signing, personally given his expected lower fee I can't think of a better value for money signing likely to be available. While Thuram offers the athletic ability. You'd then have options of Thuram, André and Mainoo for the two positions in the double pivot. With maybe one of Casemiro or McTominay staying another year to be the 4th choice while Gore heads out on loan for a season.

    I agree, plus due to the Brazilian season ending in December Brazilian clubs are always more open to selling players in January rather than July/August. That's a win/win situation as it allows United to add a quality player sooner, while Fluminese don't lose their best player mid-season. That still leaves United with the opportunity to add another midfielder in the summer such as Khephren Thuram.

  • @bedmondson
    @bedmondson6 ай бұрын

    Really enjoyed the video! Here's my take on your topic! Kobbie for me is a 6/8 hybrid like you said. However, I currently believe his game is more suited to play as a 6 right now than an 8. There are good prospects in the youth setup for the 8 role and I generally think it's easier to find an 8 than a 6... That said, I would be trying to mold Kobbie into a 6 primarily. That brings me to the points you mentioned... I agree with your suggestion about profile 3 as opposed to the other two. I want a midfielder who is primarily an 8 who has the technically ability and the short passing game that a world class 8 has. I also want that mid to be strong enough or defensively capable enough to be a 6 too. Which means I'm looking for an 8/6 who is balanced in more of the engine aspects of the game... This brings me to who I'd suggest for this role... 1. Exequiel Palacios - Palacios for me is one of the best short game passers as an 8 in the world right now and Alonso is coaching him up for this role to perfection. He's technical in this way but also in the way that he's their primary PK taker which is a helluva title for a player like Palacios given the ballers in that Leverkusen side. This speaks to Alonso's trust in his poise and technicality. Palacios is probably the most pressing 8 ive watched this season. He's constantly pressing players all over the pitch well into the game and has some of the highest interception numbers out there. He's the perfect technician for this role. Not to mention I've lost count of how many key passes I've seen him put into the box through 2 defenders from 35-40 yards out. Palacios is my Guy! 2. Amadou Onana - Onana has really impressed me this season and is the physical specimen of the bunch. Deceivingly young, I believe Onana has the physical abilities for this job straight out the bag. He's working on his technical side and I can see it coming together. A budding press-resistant 8 who is learning how to use his frame to shield the ball and turn up field. He's a little careless at times but he's still very young and now that he's becoming Belgium's long term 6, I can really see his game about to blow up. 3. Khephren Thuram - Thuram is a player who has finesse dripping throughout his game. He has the ability to do all the jobs on the pitch and an important fact is his genetics too. There's a player in there for sure. What I worry about is he's too timid for PL. He doesn't get on the ball enough for me. I want my 8 to touch the ball 70+ times per game and Thuram is often half of that. His long athletic frame is similar to Onana in that he can move and get anywhere on the pitch which helps him stay balanced. I think he has more to show my offensively before I'd pull the trigger on him but a player im keeping my eye on. Honorable mention: -Andre - not sure enough offense him -Veerman - can he step up athletically to survive the PL? I doubt it but his vision is first class -Joao Neves - Good player but I agree with your assessment and honestly, too much $$ for me right now -Wieffer - I'm intrigued but for me, the Eredivisie is pretty poor right now that it's tough to know how his game will translate -Rovella - I've had my eyes on this player for 2 years now. Think he'll be brilliant moving forward but locked in a 2 year loan with Lazio and they are playing him as a lone 6 which idk if that's his best role. If you see this, I'd appreciate your thoughts! Cheers!

I think you points are incredible and I agree with it, I just ho United can compete for the premier league once again and win it❤❤

    The most important quality for his partner to have is maturity, to observe what Kobbie is doing and adjust accordingly. To be a soldier. Kobbie should be leading the flow of play, and he should have a partner who is willing to read and follow what Kobbie is doing. Needs to be a player who is willing to be a follower, and won't take up "creative space". In addition to that, he needs to be a jack of all trades, master of none.

    I like Hannibal, he has all the skills required to be a top player, but he needs to sort out his temperament. He's too hot headed and impetuous. EtH had to sub him off to avoid him being sent off. That wasn't just over exuberance due to being in the first team, he has been like that his whole youth career at every level. In some respects the more lenient nature of youth football hasn't done him any favours as it's allowed him to keep that petulant nature in his game. That won't fly in men's football. With many of the things he got away with at youth level being a yellow or even red card offence in the men's game. I agree he should be given chances, and personally from a technical and stylistic perspective I'd rather have Hannibal in the side over McTominay. Yet United will likely have a clear out in midfield this summer. Donny will 100% leave, Casemiro and McTominay will likely leave, or at least one of them will. Amrabat shouldn't have his loan made permanent, he just isn't good enough. That leaves Mainoo and Eriksen as players who can play in the double pivot. With Eriksen another year older and not really ideally suited to playing deeper. United should sign at least two midfielders, personally I'd like to see André and Khephren Thuram. To play/rotate with Mainoo in that deeper role. Then Eriksen or Hannibal can be the 4th option. While I'd send Dan Gore out on loan to gain more experience, and with a view of coming back the following season to replace Eriksen/Hannibal as 4th choice with Eriksen probably needing to leave at that point and depending on whether Hannibal has been able to step up and prove himself. I'd be very happy if at the start of the 2025/26 season we have midfield options of André, Thuram, Mainoo and Dan Gore (off the back of a great loan in the championship). With players like Bruno (31), Mount and Amad as options in the No.10 role. André could be picked up in January with the Brazilian season ending in December. Then Thuram in the summer. We could get both for around 60-70m which is what someone like Onana would cost on his own by the time you've paid the EPL tax on top. Then depending on how players like Mainoo, Gore and Hannibal do we could have our midfield set for the next 7-8 years.

    I'm not sure a long range passing midfielder is as useful in the modern game. Teams play higher defensive lines which in turn pushes the midfielders (even the deeper ones) higher into the oppositions half. No point having a player with an excellent 60 yard pass playing 40 yards from the oppositions goal as they'll never get to use that passing range. Add to the fact that teams tend to play a more pressing game with things like the box midfield being popular as it gets a fourth player centrally. That gives far less space for a midfielder to get on the ball, look up, then open up his body to hit the longer passes. He'd be pressed before he released the ball. Midfielders need to be press resistant and have a way of progressing the ball, either through intelligent short to medium range passing or by being able to dribble through the press to create space in behind it. Your great long range passers who can switch play tend to be your defenders now. A midfielder will quickly win the ball back then play a short pass back to the defender who is in space, being behind the ball and not being the one who has had to win it back has given them time to see the play in front of them and they will have already eyed the pass before they receive the ball. Because they have more space they can then open up their body to hit that 60 yard switch of play to the player in space on the opposite wing. Forcing the opposition to transition into a new defensive shape and open up an opportunity to find a way through them as they try to get back into shape. If you think about it, who are the modern day equivalent of midfielders like Pirlo, Scholes, Carrick and Alonso? They're are any that spring to mind, as simply the game has moved on and they aren't able to thrive in the current game. That'll change of course at some point, it always does.

    @@Shappy86so do you think we need aggressive midfielders?

  • @Shappy86

    @Shappy86

    6 ай бұрын

    @@liljimmy454 We need midfielders who are press resistant, while also being good pressers themselves. That's the fundamental requirements in midfield, win the ball back, don't lose it/give it away. For that you need either very technical players with a low centre of gravity to be able to quickly turn to avoid being pressed, or physically dominant players who can just hold off a challenge when pressed. While they also need to have enough intelligence to know when and where to press, be observant and make themselves available to their teammates to give them options to pass out of a press. As well as having he required work rate, attitude and fitness levels to play an energetic fast paced style of play. On the ball they need to have some way of progressing the ball. Simply winning it back and not losing it isn't enough at the highest level. You don't want a midfield like McFred, great at winning the ball, rarely giving it away, but neither was able to progress the ball, so it was just 5 yard sideways or backwards passes once they had won the ball. So they either need to be able to pick out quick accurate passes forward to move the ball quickly through midfield. Or have the ball carrying ability to be able to carry the ball 10-30 yards up the pitch through the opposition press and create the opportunities to attack and score goals. Unless you are going to have your midfielder drop back between the CB's to find time and space on the ball to pick out those longer passes and switches of play then their long passing isn't going to be useful and not something to really consider when scouting a player. However, even if they have that ability they still need to be press resistant, intelligent, technical players capable and willing of winning the ball back and able to progress it with short and medium length passes. Th ability to drop back between the CB's for those longer passes is a bonus, something that would be useful in some situations, but it's not going to be your primary way of playing. It's too easy to negate for the opposition, they just get their ST to stay close to the midfielder and press them. They probably won't lose the ball but instead of a progressive pass forward its a sideways or backwards pass, while because the midfielder has dropped deep it means there is one less players further forward conceding ground to the opposition and making it easier for them to dominate the ball.

    We now play with a single pivot, with two eights. Therefore, I think, assuming ten Hag is still at United next season, then it's imperative we sign a holding midfielder, who will essentially replace Casemiro. I would; however, still use Mainoo as a 6, especially in games we are likely to dominate, and push him into the 8 position in games you'd expect it to be tighter - similar to how Arteta uses Rice. Now, in terms of the profile of player we should be signing in the 6 role, it has to be a deep-lying playmaker for me. If you look at all the top European sides, they have a player who is comfortable in the first phase. As good as Casemiro is off the ball (although he hasn't been great this season) he really struggles when tasked with building from the back, and actually, despite being so open against Liverpool in the FA Cup thriller, I believe we were much better beating the press because Mainoo was our deepest midfielder. If we can purchase a player who is very good on the ball, but also positionally adept, then I believe it will elevate us to the next level. That is assuming we purchase our other targets such as a left back, right centre back, and forward. In terms of profiles I'd be looking at to come in as a 6, I'd say players like Martin Zubimendi, Alan Varela, Aleix Garcia, Joshua Kimmich, and Boubacar Kamara would all provide that technical and tactical nous to not only build from the back but to also sniff out any counters. Bruno/McTominay - Mount/Mainoo Mainoo/New CDM People may not be happy with that, but I can't imagine ten Hag will spend too much on midfielders in the summer. With the emergence of Mainoo and Mount coming back, that's pretty much like two new signings. Add a CDM to that to replace Casemiro, and we have a decent enough blend of technical and physical attributes. Ideally, I feel we should have signed a different profile to Mount last summer, but we have him now, and I believe ten Hag will want to try and get the best out of him. Although it's a small sample, the midfield three of Mainoo, Mount, and Bruno looked promising during pre-season, so if that's the midfield we see next season, hopefully, the three will click.

    Ideally yes, but Gore isn't ready and we can't go playing two inexperienced players in the heart of midfield together. Gore should go out on loan in January and probably for the whole of next season. Get experience playing men's football, and continue his development. Then maybe he'll be ready to come back and fight for a place in the 2025/26 season. By which time Mainoo will have had 18 month's of first team football under his belt.

  • @Shappy86

    @Shappy86

    6 ай бұрын

    It very much depends on the team and how they want to play. In truth to be a top side you need both physicality and technical quality. The trend seems to be having press resistant midfielders to avoid losing the ball centrally in what is becoming a much more crowded and busy area of the pitch. These midfielders then look to progress the ball either by playing short, quick passes, quick one twos. Or by carrying the ball through the opposition press into the space behind to then pick out a more attacking player who can isolate a defender 1v1. While the longer range passing skills tend to be left to defenders or a midfielder who drops deep between split CB's then plays those longer passes and switches of play from the defensive line where there is more space and not from the crowded midfield area. That is where United are struggling this season. With Martinez and Shaw we don't have that passing ability in our defensive line. While our midfielders don't have the technical quality to progress the ball either by carrying it or playing quick accurate passes. That leaves the side with no way to progress the ball effectively. Leading to a blunt attack that creates very little. To solve this issue United need two things. Ball playing defenders and technical midfielders capable of progressing the ball either by carrying it or via creative passing. Two CB's and two midfielders for next season.

    @@Shappy86 Martinez is a good passer and a ball carrier as well. Why aren't we seeing that at united? For me I think we already have him, now we need to get a partner on the right who is also a ball carrier, has pace and is tall The biggest problem when it comes to ball carrying and passing lies in the midfield. That is where united must pour their limited resources in January/ summer transfer window. Again I agree, 2CBS ( Assuming we will get rid of Maguire and Lindelof, if not then at least 1) and 2 technical midfielders who are both pacey and physical

  • @Shappy86

    I disagree, I don't think he offers enough on the ball. His passing is too limited for me. Very conservative, typically short passes to a guy standing next to him. I don't think you can play for a side challenging for the title unless you have enough quality both on and off the ball. Add to that his expected cost, EPL tax would have us paying 60-70m for him regardless of Everton's financial situation. They absolutely cannot afford to be relegated and with their points deduction, selling a key player like Onana could be difference between them being an EPL club next season or not. In light of that getting 40m for Onana but losing the 100-150m that a season in the EPL is worth over a season on the Championship then it makes absolutely no sense to sell any of their key players unless for a huge fee. Given what Rice and Caicedo went for in the summer (100m) there is simply no way Everton would entertain a sale for less than 60m probably significantly more. Simply put Onana isn't worth that. There is no other top side that will come in for him and pay a huge fee. City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, none of these sides would pay more than 40m for a player like Onana, if they would sign him at all.

    From a skill set perspective he'd be a great option. However, he'd cost a fortune and United need to avoid spending big fees for the next few windows and instead bring in well scouted players with high potential, who suit the playing style but don't break the bank. United probably need to sign 8-12 players over the next few windows to rebuild this squad. Who if we are honest probably only has 6-7 players with a long term future at the club (3+ years). You can't do that if you are signing 60-80m players. United need to be bringing in players in the 30-40m price range. Ideally getting a couple for less than 30m if possible. Although in the current market and with United's reputation that will be difficult.

  • @Shappy86

    @Shappy86

    6 ай бұрын

    No chance Onana will be available for less than 50-60m. Regardless of Everton's financial issues. EPL proven players come at a premium, it's the strongest league financially, meaning the EPL clubs have the least need to sell players. Add to the competitive nature of the league and how selling a player for a lower to mid-table side could be the difference between staying in the league and getting the riches that come with it next season, or being relegated to the championship. It just isn't worth them selling their players unless they get a premium. Look at West Ham and Brighton this summer, both got around 100m each for Rice and Caicedo, two defensively minded midfielders. Everton would want between 70-80m for Onana, if you had a good negotiator you might get that down to 55-60m if you agreed to pay most of that fee up front. That's just too much for a player that doesn't offer enough on the ball. I think Onana would be too much of a passenger in a side that looks to dominate the ball. That's the difference between Onana and players like Rice and Caicedo, they have great skills on the ball as well as excellent off the ball defensive skills. Which is ultimately why they will cost more than Onana. For me Khephren Thuram is probably the best option. He reminds me of Yaya Toure. Strong, athletic player, press resistant, phenomenal ball carrier, and surprisingly technical for a player of their size. Toure had a better shot than Thuram, yet Thuram has a decent shot on him. Also Thuram would be available for between 30-40m, especially as we will have a very good connection with Nice through SJR, which could lead to an even more preferable deal, maybe a lower fee than other clubs might get or better terms of payment, spread over a longer time. That would potentially free up more funds for other signings in the summer.

  • @Shappy86

    @Shappy86

    6 ай бұрын

    Probably not in January, but we shouldn't limit ourselves by insisting on signing a lesser option just because we could get them in January. Beside, I feel that United need two midfielders. Donny will 100% leave next summer, one or both of Casemiro and McTominay could also be heading out the door. I'd look to sign André in January, which is the ideal time to buy from Brazil as that's the end of their season. So Brazilian clubs are reluctant to sell players in July/August and you have to pay a premium to sign them then. They are much easier to deal with and you typically get a better deal from them in January. We could then look to sign Thuram in the summer. We could get BOTH Thuram and André for probably a similar amount that someone like Onana would cost on their own.

    On paper yes, but I don't think Amrabat is good enough personally. Fiorentina were happy to sell him for a reason. They looked to sell him in the summer before the world cup, he then had an excellent tournament and they hoped to be able to sell him for an inflated price. The truth is that he has an excellent highlight reel, and in theory all the attributes needed to be a top player. But he has never managed to bring it all together consistently. He's decent player for a mid-table side and solid squad option for a top side that competes in European competition on a regular basis. There is no way his loan should be made permanent. He patches a hole for now. But United need better for next season.

    Modern midfields tend to play higher on the pitch and have less time and space on the ball. Teams are more compact centrally and midfielders don't get the time or space to get on the ball, look up, pick out the right pass then open up their body and play the pass. They have too many players playing in close proximity to them who will close them down and tackle or block the ball. That's why the only midfielders you see play any sort of longer range pass are the ones who drop back between the CB's to collect the ball, then turn and play those longer passes. They can do that because they aren't playing in the midfield line when they play those passes but the defensive line. Those longer passes and switches of play tend to come from defenders now as they are the ones playing in the space and who have the time on the ball to play those passes.
