When you're listening to the supermix of all 243 videos and you're on 164. Sadness. That as all this journey brings with the knowledge I will have to wait for more videos. I truly love mythology and I greatly enjoy the way you present it without making it a boring lecture.

Too bad we don't get to see the fight between Loki and Heimdall, instead the movie is very upbeat considering it's called Ragnarok

Well versed in Greek and Egyptian mythos. Would love to see major similarities and differences between the three.

I reaaallly love heimdall’s design in the movies! Those eyes are striking, which highlights the whole seeing like an eagle thing in a vaguely ominous way.

Very impressive video here. I'm truly enjoying these tales of mythology and I'm very impressed so far. Heimdall is one of the most respected in my book on Norse mythology.

Fun fact: Heimdall wasn't actually black in Norse Mythology as portrayed in the Marvel movies, he was actually called the "Whitest of the Gods." Many have gotten angry at the fact that Heimdall was played by a black person despite his title, which, depending on your opinion, may or may not be racist, it's a matter of perspective and I leave that to you. Personally though I think Heimdall was played by a black person for irony or comedic affect to those who've read about Norse mythology and I have more of an indifferent opinion on it.

That is true of him in the origional myths, and it's not surprising that Marvel showed him as other than the mythos listed him - after all in the origional myths Thor was a redhead, not blond! Oh, and according to Wikipedia "Unlike many of Marvel's Asgardians, Amora is not actually based on a goddess from Norse mythology." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enchantress_(Marvel_Comics)

Why do you write "Odinson"? Why not "Odin's son"? I mean, the gods don't have surnames. From what we know, but rather the son of nine mothers. These might be the daughter of Aegir and Ran.

Akillesursinne because in Norse culture people have given names and then because lineage is a big deal would take their father's name and add the denotive term for their gender. i.e. my name is Calvin and My Father's name is Clive so I would be called Calvin Clivesson (literally Calvin Clive's son, but the apostrophe was unknown in most writings of the time especially in the Futhark). But my sister, Katy, would be Katy Clivesdotter (sp?!). And any children I had would be Calvinssons and Calvinsdotters, but any children my sister has would be Jeffssons and Jeffsdotters because her husband is called Jeff and is the man of the house and thus head of the tribe!

Akillesursinne oh and surnames as we think of them weren't really common until around the late 1200's, most people were known by their hometown or trade - unless they had something rather remarkable about their appearance, such as Rob Roy McGregor (the Roy being an anglicised form of the Scotts word Rudhe meaning red, as in hair colour and temperament) or Edward Longshanks (long legs). That or a notable character trait, i.e. John Lack-Land, Richard the Lionheart.

I'm a swede. And I study history. But they would have said "Thor, son of Odin". Tor, Odens son. My point is, as you say, they simply didn't use surnames. I know of no rune stone with a surname on it because there simply were none. As for naming after the father, yes, but that also mothers. Your mother could be Hildir, you could be Gunhildr. Your father could be Torbjörn, you'd be Torsten. What I know of Heimdall: He watches over the Bifrost also known as the Rainbow bridge, he has a horn which he will blow to signify the beginning of Ragnarok where he will battle Loki and they will kill each other, also like Thor and Baldr, he is a son of Odin.

Thank you for that very interesting talk on Heimdall. In my readings if Marvel Comics Heimdall was always represented as a white character. So you can imagine my surprise when they chose Idris Elba a black man to play Heimdall in various films. That wouldn't make him the allfather as he would had to create the cosmo and had to be the father of the Gods to take that title. but even Odin created two humans male and female first two humans to exist right after creating the world with his two brothers vili and ve which help odin create the cosmos. Ask and Ebla the first human on earth carved from two branches of a tree found on the shores on the beach by odin vili and ve gave these two the gift of sight, knowlegde, emotion and such.
